A toilet that keeps running, fills and overflows, or refuses to clear is rarely a mystery once it is looked at properly. The important thing is to work out whether too much water is arriving or too little is leaving, because those two faults are fixed in completely different ways.
What the symptom is telling you
If water is trickling down the back of the pan or spilling from the overflow, the cistern is overfilling. That points at the inlet valve, the float setting or a fill valve that no longer shuts off cleanly. If the bowl fills and rises when you flush, or drains away very slowly afterwards, the problem sits downstream of the pan: a partial blockage in the trapway, the branch waste or the drain beyond. Water appearing at the base of the pan after a flush is a third thing again, usually a tired pan connector or a failed seal, and it needs dealing with promptly because it can rot flooring.
It helps to know that a perfectly healthy toilet will overspill if the drain is half blocked and you flush hard. The flush is not the fault; it is only revealing a restriction that was already there.
What we check when we arrive
We ask when it started, whether it happens on every flush or only sometimes, whether other fittings in the house are draining slowly or gurgling, and whether anything unusual has been flushed. Then we watch a flush, check the water level in the cistern against the marked line, and listen for the trickle of a valve that will not seat. The cistern lid comes off so we can see the inlet valve and the flush valve seal, and we check the pan connector at the back of the bowl for damp or movement.
If the cistern looks healthy but the bowl is slow, we work down the line: rods or a plunger through the pan outlet first, then the nearest rodding eye, then the manhole if the run is shared. We will not keep plunging a pan that is backing up into the room; that only spreads water.
Repairs we can often complete on the visit
Loose or perished inlet valve washers, mis-set floats, a flush valve seal that has gone hard or grown a film of limescale, and simple pan or branch blockages are all ordinary work. We carry common cistern spares, though we will not claim a specific part is on the van until we have seen what is fitted — older and imported cisterns vary a lot, and some valves are no longer made.
Where a part has to be ordered, we make the toilet safe in the meantime, which usually means isolating the supply so it cannot overfill, and we tell you plainly what you can and cannot use.
When the cause sits further down the drain
If the pan clears but the branch backs up again within a flush or two, the restriction is in the waste pipe or the shared drain. A camera survey or rodding from the manhole will show whether it is a build-up, roots, a sagging section or a partial collapse. If the blockage is in a section the water company is responsible for, we will help you work out where the boundary falls and tell you who to call — we cannot confirm adoption status on their behalf.
Keeping the mess contained and everyone safe
Sewage and standing water carry germs, so keep children and pets out of the bathroom and wash your hands after any contact. Do not keep flushing in the hope it will clear; each flush adds water to a system that is already struggling. A bucket, towels at the door and an open window do more good than anything else in the first hour. If the toilet is fed from a supply you can isolate, turn it off.
Do not pour caustic chemical drain products down a pan that is already backing up — they sit in the standing water, can splash back when the blockage moves, and can damage seals. If you have already used any, tell us before we attend so we can take the right precautions.
After the visit
Once it is flowing, the useful habits are simple: wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products go in the bin rather than the pan, and a toilet that starts gurgling or draining more slowly than it used to is worth looking at early rather than waiting for a repeat. If the same branch blocks twice in a short space of time, that pattern is worth investigating rather than plunging again.
To book, tell us the postcode, what the toilet is doing and whether any other fitting is affected. If you have used chemicals or the water has reached flooring or a ceiling below, say so when you book so we arrive prepared.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Water running down the back of the pan, or rising instead of clearing, is unsettling and quickly becomes a mess on the floor. The cause is usually one of a handful of things, and separating them is straightforward once someone has the cistern lid off and has watched a flush. We look at the whole path the water takes before we recommend anything.
What our customers say about our drainage service
4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray
Happy overall
Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.
Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about toilet overflow blockage
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is there anything I can safely try before booking?
You can lift the cistern lid and look at the water level, and you can stop the toilet flushing by isolating the supply at the isolation valve or the main stopcock. Do not dismantle the inlet valve or the flush mechanism if you are not confident with it, and do not keep flushing a pan that is already rising.
What will you actually check on the visit?
We watch a flush, check the cistern level and both valves, inspect the pan connector and test the branch with rods if the bowl is slow. If the blockage is downstream we lift the nearest manhole and check the shared run before recommending any further work.
Is an overflowing toilet dangerous?
The water itself is a hygiene risk rather than an immediate danger, but water near electrics, downlights or a ceiling below needs treating carefully. Keep people and pets away, avoid touching anything electrical that has been wet, and tell us when you book if water has reached a ceiling or a socket.
Why does it overflow only sometimes?
An intermittent overflow usually means a valve that is marginal rather than broken, or a drain that is partly restricted and only backs up on a full flush. Both are worth diagnosing properly, because a valve that is sticking now will usually fail properly later.
What does it cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, parts quoted separately, so the full cost is approved before any tools come out. If the fault turns out to be in a shared drain or needs a camera survey, we will explain that separately before any of it goes ahead.
