Outside drainage catches everything the weather throws at it — leaves, moss, grit off the roof, silt off a drive — and it does so quietly until the first heavy rain. A blocked external drain is usually a maintenance problem rather than a failure, and the aim of the visit is to clear it and tell you whether anything needs repairing.

The parts that make up an outside run

Rainwater from a roof comes down a downpipe into a gully, a hopper or a shoe, then travels underground to a chamber or a soakaway. A yard gully takes surface water from paving. A channel drain takes it from a driveway. Each of these has a place where debris gathers: the gully pot, the hopper head, the bottom of the downpipe, the first bend underground. Silt settles in the pot and, once the pot is full, the water has nowhere to go but up.

Foul drains also run outside, taking waste from the house to the chamber. Those smell different and behave differently, and it matters which one you have — a gully serving rainwater is a much simpler job than a foul run that is backing up.

What the visit covers

We ask where the water is standing, whether it drains at all, and whether the problem appeared after heavy rain or gradually over a season. Then we lift the gully grate, clear the pot and check the outlet. A pot that is full of silt and leaf mould will hold water even when the pipe beyond is clear, and clearing it is often the whole job.

We check the hopper and the downpipe for a bird's nest, a tennis ball or a build-up of moss, and we look at the joints for movement or leakage. If the gully is clear but the water still will not leave, we rod the outlet towards the next chamber and lift the first chamber cover to see whether the restriction is there.

Gullies that belong to somebody else

This is the part that catches people out. A gully in the pavement or at the edge of a highway, a road drain, or a sewer that serves several properties may be the responsibility of the council or the water company rather than the homeowner. We can help you work out which section serves your property and where the boundary plausibly falls, but we cannot confirm adoption or ownership on their behalf, and we will not charge you to clear something that is theirs to clear.

If the run you share with neighbours is blocked, the practical first step is usually to speak to them, because the blockage may sit under a neighbour's garden and access will need agreeing.

Repairs that turn up during the visit

Gully pots crack, particularly old clay ones, and a cracked pot lets silt into the pipe and water into the surrounding ground. Grates go missing. Downpipe shoes come away from the wall. These are ordinary repairs, and we will quote them rather than simply clearing and leaving. A collapsed section underground, or a pipe that has been crushed by a vehicle or a root, is a different scale of job and is quoted after a survey.

What you can do before we arrive

If it is safe to reach, lift the grate with a gloved hand and pull out the obvious leaves and silt. Do not put your arm down a foul gully, and do not lift a chamber cover if it is heavy, damaged or in a roadway. If water is rising near a door, a bucket and towels at the threshold will do more than anything else, and moving anything valuable off the floor is sensible.

Do not pour caustic drain chemicals into an outside gully. They do not work well on silt and leaves, they can harm plants and pets, and they make the drain unpleasant to work on. Tell us if any has been used.

Keeping it clear

A grate over the gully, cleared before winter and again after leaf fall, prevents most of these blockages. Keeping a downpipe shoe clear of moss and checking that water runs away after rain rather than sitting in the pot are two habits that cost nothing. If you have a soakaway, remember that it can silt up over years and that clearing the gully will not restore a soakaway that has filled.

To book, tell us the postcode, what the drain serves and where the water is standing. If you can see a chamber cover nearby, mention it, as that often shortens the visit.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

An outside drain that stops taking water is easy to ignore until it backs up against a wall or floods a path. Most outside blockages are leaves, silt and moss in a gully or a downpipe shoe, and they clear quickly once someone looks. We find the point where the water stops moving before we start work.

What our customers say about our drainage service

4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray

Happy overall

Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.

Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about blocked external drain

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I clear it myself?

You can lift the gully grate with gloves and remove leaves and silt, and you can clear a hopper head by hand. Do not put an arm into a foul gully, do not lift heavy or damaged chamber covers, and do not dig around a pipe to find a break.

What do you check?

We clear the gully pot and outlet, check the hopper and downpipe, test the flow, and rod towards the first chamber if the water still will not leave. If the restriction is beyond your boundary we will tell you rather than charge for it.

Is a blocked outside drain a health risk?

A rainwater gully is low risk, but a foul gully or a chamber holding sewage is not. Keep children and pets away, wash your hands after any contact, and do not let water pool against an air brick or a door threshold where it can get inside.

The drain in the pavement is blocked — is that mine?

Usually not. Highway gullies and shared sewers normally sit with the council or the water company. We can help you work out which section serves your property, but we cannot confirm adoption status, and it is worth asking them before paying anyone to clear it.

What does the visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, parts quoted separately, so the full cost is approved before any tools come out. If a gully pot, grate or section of pipe needs replacing, that is quoted separately once we have seen it.
