Overheating is a symptom with several possible sources, and the right response depends entirely on which one applies. A blocked vent needs clearing, a failed cooling fan needs replacing, a thermostat with stuck contacts needs a new part, and an appliance being run beyond its duty cycle needs a different conversation. What matters is that overheating is never simply "how it is" — it accelerates wear on insulation, motors and electronics, and in the worst case it starts a fire.
The paths heat escapes by
Small appliances are designed with a specific way of getting rid of heat. Some rely on convection through vents, some on a fan that draws air across a motor or element, some on the mass of the housing itself, and some on a thermostat that cycles the element off before the temperature climbs too far. Anything that obstructs that path — a blocked filter, a vent pressed against a cupboard, a fan that has slowed, dust matting on a heat sink — causes heat to accumulate. Anything that defeats the control — a thermostat with welded contacts, a thermistor reading low, a control board that never switches off — causes the appliance to keep heating past its set point.
What we look at
We start with how the appliance is installed and used: is it against a wall or under a cupboard with no clearance, is the filter clean, is it being run for longer than its duty cycle allows? Then we test the components. Vents and airways are checked and cleared. The cooling fan is checked for free rotation, correct speed and airflow. The thermostat is tested for correct opening and closing, and the thermistor for a plausible reading at room temperature and under heat. Where the appliance has a thermal cut-out that has been tripping, we establish why rather than simply resetting it.
The parts that fail
Thermostats are the most common culprit on heating appliances: contacts weld shut and the element keeps running. Cooling fans fail quietly, often without any noise, and an appliance with a stopped fan can overheat within minutes. Thermal cut-outs operate as designed, which makes them a symptom rather than a cause. Control board relays can stick closed and hold an element on. Dust and lint blockage is the cheapest cause and one of the most frequent, particularly on air fryers, toasters and vacuum exhausts.
Repair and replacement
Clearing a blockage, replacing a fan, fitting a thermostat or a thermal cut-out are all sensible repairs that restore normal operation. A control board fault is more expensive and needs weighing against the appliance's age. Where overheating has been prolonged, we inspect the wiring and insulation for heat damage before recommending a repair, because a thermostat that has been stuck for weeks may have cooked other components. If the damage is extensive, we say so and recommend replacement rather than a partial fix.
Safety, clearly
Unplug the appliance and let it cool completely before anyone looks at it. Never obstruct vents to reduce noise, and never run an appliance designed for intermittent use continuously. Do not bypass a thermal cut-out or fit a higher-rated fuse. If the casing becomes too hot to touch, if there is a burning smell, smoke or visible discolouration, stop using it and treat it as a fire risk.
What helps the diagnosis
Tell us when it gets hot — immediately, after ten minutes, on a particular setting, only in a warm room — and whether it shuts down on its own. Mention where the appliance sits and whether it has clearance around it, how often filters are cleaned, and whether the exterior feels hot to the touch. That information frequently identifies the cause before the appliance is opened.
Booking
Book online with the make, model and the overheating pattern. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts identified and quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
An appliance that becomes uncomfortably hot, smells warm or shuts itself off mid-use is telling you its cooling or temperature control has stopped coping. Left alone, that shortens the life of every component inside it and raises a real fire risk. We identify whether the cause is airflow, a thermostat, a fan or simply how the appliance is being used.

Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about overheating appliance
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just give the vents a clean and see how it goes?
Cleaning vents and filters is a sensible first step and sometimes solves it outright. If the appliance still overheats afterwards, the cause is internal and should be tested rather than tolerated.
What is checked during the visit?
Clearance and airflow around the appliance, vents and filters, the cooling fan's operation, the thermostat's switching behaviour, thermistor readings, the thermal cut-out and any heat damage to wiring or insulation. Each test is carried out with the appliance isolated and cool.
Is an overheating appliance a fire risk?
It can be. Sustained overheating damages insulation and can ignite accumulated dust or lint. If the casing is too hot to touch or you notice a burning smell, stop using it immediately.
It switches itself off after twenty minutes. Is that a fault?
It may be a thermal cut-out doing its job because something else is running hot, or it may be a designed duty cycle. The distinction matters, and testing the thermostat and airflow tells you which.
How is the cost structured?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work begins; parts are identified and priced separately.
