A coffee machine that has started producing weak, slow, bitter or no coffee at all is usually reporting a specific fault rather than general decline. Espresso machines, filter machines, pod machines and bean-to-cup models each have their own weak points, and the symptoms — no flow, slow flow, no pressure, no steam, weak coffee — map fairly reliably onto particular components. The trick is to test them in the right order.
Start with water and scale
Water is the most common cause of coffee machine problems, and hard water is the most common cause of water problems. Scale builds in the boiler, the thermoblock, the group head and the steam wand, narrowing passages and insulating heating surfaces. The result is slow flow, weak steam, temperature instability and eventually a machine that will not pump at all. If you live in a hard water area and have not descaled on the maker's schedule, that is where the diagnosis should begin. Descaling is also the one maintenance task that genuinely belongs to the owner, provided it is done to the maker's instructions and the machine is fully rinsed afterwards.
Pump and pressure faults
If the pump runs but no water arrives, the fault could be a blocked water filter, an air lock, a stuck solenoid valve, a scaled group head or a failed pump. If the pump is silent, it may have failed electrically, or the machine's control may not be calling for water. Pressure problems show up as a shot that dribbles or one that gushes; on machines with a pressure gauge, the reading tells you a great deal. We test the pump's operation and the flow path before concluding the pump has failed, because a blocked valve mimics a dead pump convincingly.
Group head, seals and steam
The group head is where scale, old coffee oils and hardened gaskets combine. A worn group gasket causes leaks around the portafilter and poor pressure. A blocked shower screen distributes water unevenly. A scaled steam wand produces wet, sputtering steam instead of dry steam. These are serviceable items, and replacing a gasket or cleaning a screen is modest work with a noticeable effect. Where a machine has an integrated grinder, we also check the grind setting and burr condition, because a grinder that has drifted coarse will make good coffee taste weak regardless of the brew side.
Bean-to-cup and pod machines
Bean-to-cup machines add a brew unit, a grinder and often a milk system, any of which can be the source of a fault. A brew unit that jams is usually a cleaning issue or a worn seal. A milk system that has been left unrinsed will block with dried milk and can harbour bacteria, so cleaning it matters for hygiene as well as function. Pod machines are simpler but have their own failure points: a piercing needle that clogs, a pump that loses prime, a water tank valve that sticks.
Repair decisions
Gaskets, shower screens, steam valves, filters and pump assemblies are all replaceable and worth doing on a machine of reasonable quality. A boiler that has scaled solid or a control board that has failed may not be economic, especially on a budget model. We identify the part, confirm availability for your model and quote it separately, so you can weigh repair against replacement honestly.
Safety and scope
Unplug before any inspection, and never open a machine that is still hot or pressurised — release pressure and let it cool as the maker instructs. Keep water away from the control board and wiring. Do not use descaling solution stronger than specified, and always rinse thoroughly, because residual acid is corrosive to seals and to anyone drinking the next cup.
Booking
Book online with the make, model and a description of the symptom, plus when you last descaled. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work begins, with parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Coffee machines fail in ways that are often specific to their type: a pump that cannot build pressure, a group head scaled solid, a grinder that has drifted coarse, a steam wand that has blocked. Because a good cup depends on several systems working together, a methodical check is more useful than replacing the part that seems most likely. We diagnose the fault and explain what it will take to fix.

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about coffee machine fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I descale before booking a visit?
If you have not descaled on schedule, yes — it is the most common cause and may resolve slow flow on its own. Use the maker's descaler, follow the instructions exactly and rinse thoroughly. If the fault remains, it needs diagnosis.
What is checked during the visit?
The water filter and flow path, pump operation and pressure, solenoid valves, the group head and gasket, shower screen, steam valve and wand, plus grinder setting and burr wear on bean-to-cup models. Testing follows the water path so a blockage is not mistaken for a failed pump.
Is it safe to open the machine myself to clear a blockage?
No. Coffee machines hold hot water under pressure and contain mains wiring close to water. Depressurise and cool as the maker instructs, and leave internal work to someone who can do it safely.
The pump runs but no water comes through. Is the pump broken?
Not necessarily. A blocked filter, an air lock, a stuck solenoid valve or a scaled group head produces the same symptom. The flow path is tested before the pump is condemned.
How do you charge?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We confirm the full cost and get your approval before work starts; parts are identified and quoted separately.
