Dishwasher Not Heating Water? Cold Washes Leave Fat Behind in Solihull
We measure the wash temperature, test the heater, thermostat and sensor, and confirm whether the fault is the element, its control or the supply.

A dishwasher relies on hot water for most of what it does. Detergent needs heat to activate, fat needs heat to soften and rinse away, and the drying stage depends on the load being hot at the end of the wash. When heating fails, every one of those suffers at once, and the machine still completes its programme and reports nothing wrong.
How you notice it
- dishes come out greasy, especially plastic items and pans
- glasses and cutlery have a dull film
- the tablet is partly undissolved in the dispenser or on the floor of the tub
- the load is cold or only lukewarm when the door is opened at the end
- the cycle takes noticeably longer, because the machine waits for a temperature it never reaches
That last point is useful: many machines time the wash by temperature, so a failed heater extends the cycle rather than shortening it.
Three things can cause a cold wash
The heater itself, the sensor that reports temperature, or the control that switches the heater. They are not equally likely and they are not equally priced.
- The element has failed open circuit. The most common cause. No heat at all, and the machine waits indefinitely.
- The thermostat or NTC sensor has drifted. The machine may under-heat, over-heat or behave erratically, and the reading does not match reality.
- The relay on the control board has failed. The board is not switching the heater even though the element is sound. This is more common on machines with damp-affected boards.
- A thermal cut-out has tripped. Usually a symptom of a previous overheat, not a cause in itself, and it should not simply be reset without finding out why it operated.
Measuring rather than guessing
We run a wash cycle and measure the actual water temperature at intervals, which tells us immediately whether the machine is heating at all and whether it is reaching its target. From there we test the element for continuity and resistance, check the sensor's reading against a known temperature, and confirm whether the board is supplying the element when it should.
That sequence matters because an element that tests fine but receives no power is a board fault, and an element that is open circuit will not heat whatever the board does. Fitting one without checking the other is how people end up with a second failed visit.
Scale and the hard water factor
In hard water areas, scale builds on the element and insulates it. The element still works but transfers less heat, so washes get progressively cooler and cycles get longer. If your element is scaled rather than failed, the answer may be descaling and a water hardness setting rather than a part, and we will say so. Heavy scale can also cause the element to overheat locally and fail, which is one reason softener salt matters.
Parts and what to expect
Heating elements are model-specific and often part of an assembly with the sensor. Availability varies: some are common, some need ordering. We quote the part against your model number once identified, and if it needs ordering the job becomes two visits. We will be clear about that rather than implying everything is available immediately.
On some machines the element is accessible from inside the tub; on others the machine has to come out and be opened up. That affects the time on the job.
Electrical safety
A heater is a high-current component and any work on it requires the power off at the socket or, where the socket is inaccessible, at the consumer unit. Water is isolated too where the work involves the sump area. If the machine has tripped the electrics, or there is any smell of burning, do not reset and retry; leave it isolated.
If water has reached the base tray, that is a separate fault and a common cause of board damage. We check for it, because replacing a board on a machine that is still leaking repeats the failure.
Aftercare
After the repair we run a cycle and measure the temperature again, confirming the machine reaches its target and completes in a normal time. Check the results on a load with some fat in it, since that is where a cold wash shows first. If you are in a hard water area, keep the salt topped up and check the hardness setting, which is often left at the factory default.
When to book
Book if the load comes out cold or lukewarm, if tablets are not dissolving, or if cycles have become noticeably longer. Mention whether the machine trips the electrics, because that changes the priority.
Have your brand and model ready, and tell us what you have observed. Book online, with the booking fee paid at the time of booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before any work begins.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A dishwasher that has stopped heating will still run a full cycle, which is why it can go unnoticed for a while. The dishes come out greasy, glasses stay cloudy and tablets do not dissolve properly. Since the machine sounds normal, it is easy to blame the detergent. The temperature is the thing to check.

Questions people ask about dishwasher not heating water
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
How can I tell if my dishwasher is heating?
Open the door shortly after the wash phase starts and feel the water temperature carefully, or check whether the load is warm at the end of a cycle. A machine that finishes cold or lukewarm is not heating properly.
What will you test on the visit?
We measure the water temperature during a cycle and test the element for continuity and resistance. We also check the sensor reading against a known temperature, and confirm whether the board is switching power to the element.
Could it be scale rather than a failed element?
It can be. Scale insulates the element so it transfers less heat, and washes get cooler over time. If that is what we find, descaling and a water hardness setting may be the answer rather than a part.
Is it safe to keep using a dishwasher that isn't heating?
It is not dangerous in itself, but if the machine has tripped the electrics or smells of burning, stop and isolate it. A cold wash also leaves fat in the machine, which causes smells over time.
What does it cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work begins; the element or sensor is identified and quoted separately against your model.
