The control panel is the interface, not the brain. Behind it sits the control board, which runs the programme. When the panel stops responding, the fault could be in the buttons, the membrane, the ribbon that links the panel to the board, the board itself, or the supply feeding the board. Those have very different costs.

What "not working" looks like

  • no display and no lights at all
  • display lit but no button responds
  • some buttons work, others do not
  • display shows random segments or flickers
  • the machine beeps continuously or at random
  • the panel responds only after several presses

The pattern matters. A dead panel with a dead machine is a supply or board fault. A live display with dead buttons is usually the membrane or the panel's own connection. Random segments suggest moisture or a failing display driver.

Moisture is a common culprit

Dishwasher control panels sit above a hot, wet environment and are sealed for a reason. When the seal fails, or when a leak sends steam upward, moisture reaches the membrane and the connector. The result is erratic behaviour that often improves after the machine has been off for a day, then returns.

If your panel misbehaves after a cycle and works when cold, tell us. That history points at moisture rather than a failed board, and it changes the diagnosis and the cost.

The testing sequence

With the power isolated we check:

  1. supply reaching the board
  2. the ribbon or membrane connector, seated and clean
  3. the button membrane for continuity across each key
  4. the board for signs of water damage, burnt components or failed relays
  5. the display driver where the fault is confined to the display

Only at step four do we start talking about a board. A board replacement on a machine that had a loose ribbon is an expensive way to solve a connection problem.

Board repair or replacement

Some board faults are repairable at component level by a specialist, and some are not. Where the board is available as a part, replacement is usually the practical answer and we quote it. Where the board is obsolete, the machine's future is limited and we will say so plainly rather than chasing a used part of unknown history.

Boards are model and often serial-specific. A board from a similar model may look identical and be programmed differently, so we identify against your number.

What we will not do

We will not fit a second-hand board of unknown origin as a first option, and we will not promise that a board swap fixes every symptom until the supply and connections are proven. We also will not advise opening the panel yourself, because the board carries mains voltage and the connectors are easily damaged.

Safety

The control board has mains potential at several points even when the machine appears off, depending on the model. Power must be isolated at the socket or consumer unit before the panel is opened, and the board needs time to discharge. If there is any sign of burning, scorching or a fishy smell, do not use the machine and mention it at booking.

Aftercare

After a repair we run a full cycle and check every function: programme selection, start, delay timer, and any display features. A replacement board usually resets the settings, so expect to set the clock, water hardness and preferred programme again. Keep a note of those settings before the visit if you can.

Booking

Tell us exactly which buttons respond, whether the display is lit, and whether the fault is worse after a wash. That last detail is often the clue. Book online, pay the booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A panel with no lights, dead buttons or a display showing nonsense is one of the more expensive-sounding dishwasher faults, and sometimes it is not. A loose ribbon connector or moisture in the panel can mimic a failed board. Testing the supply and the connections first is what stops an unnecessary board replacement.

Questions people ask about dishwasher control panel not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could it just be a fuse or the socket?

It can be, and that is checked first. If the machine is completely dead with no lights, supply is the starting point. A panel that is lit but unresponsive is a different fault.

What will you test before quoting a board?

Supply to the board, the ribbon and membrane connectors, the button membrane continuity, and the board itself. We do not quote a board until the connections are proven good.

My panel misbehaves after a wash and works when cold. What does that mean?

That pattern usually points at moisture reaching the membrane or connector rather than a failed board. It is a better outcome than a board fault, and telling us about it helps the diagnosis.

Is a second-hand board a good option?

We would not fit one as a first choice. Boards are often programmed for specific models and serial ranges, and a used part of unknown history can introduce a second fault.

What will the visit cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts, with a board or panel quoted separately against your model.
