Standing water is the garden problem with the longest memory: every soggy winter is forgotten by June and remembered in November, when the lawn is a lake and the border is a swamp again. The instinctive fixes — digging a hole and hoping, buying a soakaway crate from a website — work for some gardens and do nothing for others, because waterlogging has causes and they are not all in your garden. This visit is about finding yours before anyone digs anything.

Why gardens stay wet

The usual suspects work alone or in combination. Heavy clay soil drains slowly by nature, holding water like a sponge and releasing it too slowly. Compacted ground — from years of feet, machinery or simply being built on — sheds water instead of absorbing it. Levels are a quiet villain: ground that slopes gently towards the house or sits in a hollow collects everything around it, and a previous owner's patio can silently redirect runoff into your border. Roof water is the one everyone overlooks — a single downpipe discharging onto a lawn delivers thousands of litres in a wet month, and no lawn can drink that. And sometimes the cause is beyond your fence: water arriving from a neighbour's sloping ground, from the highway, or from a high water table, none of which any fix in your garden can fully control.

How we diagnose it

The assessment is mostly observation over evidence you already have. We look at how the ground sits — where the water lies, which way the land falls, where the wettest zones are relative to paths, downpipes and boundaries. We dig or probe to see what the soil profile is like: topsoil over clay is a different problem from topsoil over compacted rubble, and both behave differently from a naturally high water table. We check where downpipes, soakaway points and any old land drains discharge. And we ask about history — whether the wetness is new or decades old, whether it follows building work nearby, and whether it is worst after long rain or short storms, which points to different causes. Only then do we discuss options.

The range of fixes, honestly described

The cheapest fixes are often the most effective: intercepting roof water into a proper drain or water butt, breaking up compaction by aerating, adding organic matter to open up clay, and regrading the low spots that collect water. Where the ground genuinely needs help, land drains or a soakaway can be the right answer — a trench-and-pipe system leading to a pit in ground that can actually absorb water — but here honesty matters most of all: ground conditions decide whether a soakaway works, and we will not dig one into clay that will not drain, whatever the website promised. We also scope plainly what a fix will and will not achieve: a land drain can take the worst out of a wet winter, but if your garden sits at the bottom of a slope with a high water table, nobody can promise you a dry garden — and we will say so before taking your money rather than after.

What sits beyond our garden fence

Some water problems are bigger than one property. Water running off the highway, a neighbour's re-graded ground, or a blocked ditch or culvert upstream may be the true cause, and those belong to the council, the water company or your neighbour. We help you work out what is actually happening and explain who to raise it with, but resolving boundaries and authority responsibility is not something we can promise or decide for you.

Aftercare and realistic expectations

Whatever the fix, drainage systems need the garden around them to cooperate: aerating compacted lawns annually, keeping organic matter in the soil, not letting heavy machinery over the drained area, and keeping gullies and inspection points clear of leaves. Drainage work is quoted after the assessment, because the right solution is unknown until the ground has been understood — and any scheme we install will be explained in plain terms of what it will improve and what it cannot guarantee.

How to book

Book by phone or website, noting where the water gathers, how long it sits after rain, whether it is worse in some seasons, and anything that changed before it started — building work, a new patio, a tree removed. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost of any work is quoted and approved before we start.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A garden that squelches for a fortnight after every shower is miserable to use and brutal on plants, and it rarely fixes itself. Waterlogging has a short list of causes — clay soil, compaction, levels, downpipes and what lies beyond the fence — and the right solution depends entirely on which ones apply to you. We diagnose before we dig, and we are honest about what any fix will and will not achieve.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about poor drainage in garden

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I fix a soggy garden myself?

Some of it, yes — aerating compacted lawn, adding organic matter to clay beds, redirecting a downpipe into a water butt and raking out the shallow dip that gathers water are all honest DIY. What usually defeats the homeowner is diagnosis: digging a soakaway into ground that cannot drain is expensive, backbreaking and useless. If the water lies for more than a day or two after rain, get the cause assessed first.

What do you check when assessing garden drainage?

How the ground lies and where water pools, what the soil profile is like a spade's depth down, where downpipes and any existing drains discharge, whether the wetness follows building work or heavy use, and what is happening at the boundaries. Together that distinguishes clay, compaction, levels, roof water and water arriving from beyond the fence — each of which has a different fix.

Will a soakaway guarantee my garden stays dry?

No, and we will not pretend it will. A soakaway only works where the surrounding ground can actually absorb water — in heavy clay or where the water table sits high, it fills and does nothing. Ground conditions decide the solution, and we scope honestly what any scheme will realistically improve: usually taking the worst out of a wet winter, but not promising a dry garden if water arrives from beyond your control.

Water seems to be running in from my neighbour's garden — can you stop it?

We can often intercept or manage water arriving at your boundary, and sometimes the simplest answer is a change on the other side of the fence that your neighbour would need to agree to. Where the source is a neighbour's ground, the highway or an upstream ditch, raising it with the right person is part of the solution, but responsibility is not something we can decide or guarantee — we help you establish what is happening and who owns it.

How much does garden drainage work cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. Because the right solution is unknown until the ground has been assessed, drainage work is quoted after that assessment and approved before we start, with any materials such as pipework, gravel or crates quoted separately.
