A stair lift has two sets of controls: the ones on the lift itself, and the call-send stations fixed at the top and bottom of the stairs. When a call button stops working, the lift may run perfectly from the seat — which makes the fault easy to dismiss. But if the lift cannot be summoned, someone at the wrong end of the staircase is stuck, and that is a genuine problem of independence and safety, not a cosmetic fault.
Why call buttons stop responding
The simplest cause is a tired or corroded button switch — they are pressed dozens of times a day and eventually wear. Then there is the wiring between the station and the lift: a connector working loose, a cable damaged where it passes along the rail or through a wall, or corrosion at a terminal. Power matters too: a lift with a weak battery supply can respond at the seat but reject calls, and some models lock out call functions on a low battery. On models where the call station is paired or coded, a power cut or battery change can drop the link. And sometimes the fault is not the call system at all but the lift's receiver board or an interlock that makes the lift refuse every command.
What you can safely check
Try the other call station and the seat controls, and note exactly which combination works and which does not — that pattern is genuinely diagnostic. Check that the button itself presses and clicks normally. If your manual describes any reset or re-pairing procedure for the call stations, following it exactly is reasonable. Beyond that, wiring and receiver testing are engineer work. Also note: a lift that cannot be summoned is a real risk for anyone who cannot manage the stairs unaided, so treat the fault as urgent and make other arrangements in the meantime rather than hoping it recovers.
Safety notes
If the lift has stopped with someone aboard, keep them safe, comfortable and calm; call 999 if they are in pain or distress. Manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions and only if a confident person can follow the steps safely — never climb under, push or force a suspended lift. If the lift behaves erratically, trips the electrics or smells of burning, stop using it until it has been checked.
How we diagnose a dead call button
We test each call station's switch and output, trace the wiring from station to lift checking every connector and cable run, and test the lift's receiver response both with its own controls and with the call system. We load-test the lift's batteries, because a weak supply that still runs the seat controls can block call functions. Where the model pairs stations to the lift, we re-pair per the manufacturer's procedure. The result is a precise diagnosis and a full quote for your approval before any work starts, with parts — a station, cable or board — quoted separately, and manufacturer-approved parts only.
Repairs and realistic options
Worn buttons and loose connectors are quick, economical fixes. Damaged cabling is repaired or replaced neatly, routed so it cannot snag. A failed receiver board is a bigger job, and on older lifts we will always be honest if the board is obsolete and discuss the realistic options, including whether a replacement lift makes more sense. We never promise stock availability or repair times before diagnosis.
Aftercare
Wipe call stations clean occasionally — grimy buttons stick and wear faster — and mention any sluggish response early, because a button that sometimes needs a second press is weeks from failing. An annual service includes exercising both stations and the seat controls as routine.
Booking

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The wall call buttons matter more than they look — they are how the lift is summoned to your floor, and often how a less-mobile family member gets upstairs at all. When they stop responding, our visit traces the whole chain from button to lift.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about call button not responding
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I try wiring checks myself?
No — call station wiring runs along the rail and through the lift's electrics, and it is not user-serviceable territory. Testing and re-pairing procedures described in your manual are fine; anything involving connections, cables or covers is for an engineer with the right test equipment.
What do you test when a call button fails?
We test the button switch itself, the wiring and connectors back to the lift, the lift's receiver response, and the battery supply — because a weak battery can block call functions even when the seat controls seem fine. You get the cause explained and a full quote before any work starts.
The lift works from the seat — is the call button repair urgent?
Yes, if anyone in the household relies on the call button to summon the lift. A lift that cannot be called to your floor leaves you taking the stairs instead, which is precisely the risk the lift exists to remove. We would treat it as a priority booking rather than routine maintenance.
Both call buttons stopped at the same time — what does that suggest?
When both fail together, the cause is usually on the lift side — the receiver, the supply or an interlock — rather than two buttons wearing out simultaneously. Tell us that detail when you book; it directs the diagnosis immediately and can shorten the visit considerably.
What will it cost to put right?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us. Once diagnosed, the full cost of the repair is quoted for your approval before we start, and parts are quoted separately.
