Weight and support problems are the faults where the honest answer matters most, because the equipment carries people. Our role is to inspect the structure, identify what has failed or is failing, repair what can properly be repaired, and be clear about the limits — including the limits of what we can tell you.

What "Not Supporting Weight" Looks Like

  • Sagging or dipping sections, particularly in the middle of a bed base or under the seat of a recliner.
  • Creaking, cracking or groaning under load, which is movement where there should be none.
  • A chair that rocks or tips when someone sits or stands, suggesting a bent frame or failed mounting.
  • Loose or pulled fixings — screws that will not tighten, bolts that have elongated their holes, brackets that have distorted.
  • Movement at the joints in a frame that should be rigid.
  • A mechanism that stalls only when someone is on the furniture, which can be a support problem rather than a motor problem.

The Structural Causes

Frames on this equipment are usually steel or timber, with the load carried through joints, brackets and the base platform. Common failures include fatigued welds, split timber rails, brackets that have bent under repeated load, castors or glides that have collapsed, and base slats that have cracked. On recliners, the seat platform and the footrest linkage take high point loads and wear accordingly.

Sometimes the cause is not failure at all but mismatch: a domestic bed used by two heavy occupants, a care setting using furniture rated for occasional domestic use, or a mattress and base combination outside what the manufacturer intended. Those are worth saying out loud, without judgement, because the solution is different.

What We Inspect

We look at the frame along its length rather than at the symptom, check every visible joint and fixing, test for movement at the mountings, examine the base platform and slats, and check that the furniture sits level on the floor. We run the mechanism through its travel, loaded where it is safe to do so, and watch for flex that should not be there.

Where a fixing is loose but the material is sound, we re-fix it properly — with the right fastener for the substrate, not a larger screw into a worn hole. Where a bracket is bent we replace it. Where a timber rail has split we replace the rail. Where a weld has failed on a load-bearing steel frame, that is not something we would re-weld in your home; the component is replaced or the furniture is referred back to the manufacturer.

What We Cannot Tell You

We do not certify furniture as suitable for a particular person. Whether a bed or chair is right for someone's weight, size, mobility or medical needs is a matter for them, their family and carers, and the manufacturer's stated limits — not for a repair visit. We will read the rating plate with you, tell you what the manufacturer states, and tell you what we found structurally. We do not make clinical recommendations and we do not issue fitness-for-use certificates.

What we can say is whether the frame and fixings we inspected are sound, whether anything has failed, and whether a repair will restore the furniture to its designed capability.

Safety in the Meantime

If the furniture rocks, tips or makes cracking noises under load, stop using it for anyone until it has been checked. A chair that tips can cause a fall, and a bed that sags can make getting out harder and more dangerous. Do not prop a sagging base with books, cushions or blocks of wood — an unsecured prop can shift without warning.

Do not attempt to re-weld, glue or bolt through a failed joint yourself, and never drill new holes into a load-bearing member to "beef it up". Those changes redistribute load in ways the design never anticipated.

If someone has fallen or is stuck and in pain or distress, call 999 before anything else.

After the Repair

We run the furniture through its range with a load where appropriate, check that fixings have stayed tight, and show you what to look at periodically — joints, mountings, base slats. Where the honest conclusion is that the furniture has reached the end of its safe life, we will say so and explain why, rather than take on a repair that will not last.

Booking

Tell us what happens and when — creaking under load, tipping on standing, sagging in the middle — and the make and model. The booking fee is paid when you book, labour runs hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

If a bed sags, a recliner creaks under load or a rise chair tips awkwardly when someone stands, the cause is usually structural rather than electrical. Those symptoms deserve a proper look — not because the furniture is about to collapse, but because a frame that is bending or a fixing that is pulling out will not improve with use. We assess what is actually carrying the load and report honestly on what we find.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Job: Stair Lift Service

Would use again

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about furniture not supporting weight properly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I just put a board under the mattress to firm it up?

A rigid board can spread load across a sagging base, but it does not repair the cause and it can hide a failing frame. Do not prop the base on books or blocks — an unsecured prop can shift without warning. Have the structure inspected first, then decide what is sensible.

What do you check during the visit?

The frame along its length, every visible joint, bracket and fixing, the base platform and slats, and whether the furniture sits level. We run the mechanism through its travel, loaded where safe, looking for flex and movement that should not be there, then report what we found.

Can you confirm it is safe for a specific person to use?

No. Suitability for someone's weight, size, mobility or medical needs is a matter for them, their family and carers, and the manufacturer's stated limits — not something a repair visit can certify. We will read the rating plate with you and report on the structure, but we do not make clinical judgements.

The frame has a cracked weld — can you weld it?

We do not weld load-bearing frames in your home. A failed weld on a structural member is either repaired by replacing the component or referred back to the manufacturer, because an in-situ weld on a loaded frame is not a repair we would stand behind. We will tell you which route applies.

How is the cost worked out?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. After the inspection we quote the full cost of any repair for your approval before starting. Replacement brackets, rails or fixings are quoted separately.
