Spray Arm Not Performing? Blocked Jets Change the Whole Wash in Smethwick

The spray arms are the part of a dishwasher that actually does the cleaning. Water is pumped up through them and forced out of angled jets, which both sprays the load and spins the arm. If the jets block, the arm spins unevenly or stops, or the water reaching the arm is weak, the load comes out streaked and gritty regardless of how good the detergent is.

Signs the arm is the problem

• a clean patch beside a dirty patch on the same rack
• food residue on the upper rack only, or the lower rack only
• glasses clean on one side and filmed on the other
• the arm found in a random position after a cycle, suggesting it is not rotating
• visible debris in the jet holes when you look against a light

What blocks the jets

Food particles that bypassed the filter, pieces of glass, fruit pips, hardened fat and scale in hard water areas. The lower arm is more exposed to debris; the upper arm often suffers from scale because it sees less flow. A jet that is half blocked does not stop spraying, it sprays weakly and in the wrong direction, which is why the symptom is patchy rather than total.

Checking rotation

With the machine empty and off, spin each arm by hand. It should turn freely with a light push and coast briefly. A stiff arm points at worn or gummy bushes. An arm that wobbles points at a worn hub. An arm that will not turn at all may be catching on the rack or on a tall item, which is a loading problem rather than a fault.

Also check the arm is actually seated on its hub. Arms that clip on can work loose, and a loose arm leaks water at the hub instead of sending it to the jets.

Water delivery

If the jets are clear and the arm spins freely but the wash is still poor, the problem is upstream: the wash pump is weak, the diverter that alternates between arms is stuck, or the filter housing is restricting flow. We measure flow at the arm rather than assuming the pump, because a partially blocked supply to the arm produces the same weak spray.

Cleaning versus replacing

Cleaning the jets with a cocktail stick and a warm rinse is a reasonable DIY task and often restores performance. Do not enlarge the jets with a pin or drill, which permanently changes the spray pattern. If the arm is cracked, the hub is worn or the bushes are shot, replacement is the answer, and arms are usually model-specific so the part is ordered against your number.

What we will not do

We will not promise that a new spray arm fixes a poor wash, because if the pump is weak the new arm will perform exactly as badly. Nor will we fit an arm that is not correct for the model; a similar-looking arm with the wrong jet pattern will disappoint.

Isolation

Any work beyond removing the arms requires power and water isolation, and only where those are safely accessible. Removing the arms themselves is done with the machine off and cool. If the machine has been tripping the electrics or showing water at the base, we treat it as an electrical or leak job first.

Aftercare

After clearing or replacing, run a cycle with a mixed load and inspect both racks. Check the filter before each of the next few cycles, since whatever blocked the jets came through the filter and may do so again. Keep large food debris out of the machine by scraping plates.
