Same-day dishwasher door not closing

Urgent jobs can often be booked for today. Ask when you book and we will confirm the slot before you pay anything.

The dishwasher door has to close squarely, compress the seal evenly and engage a catch that signals the interlock. If any part of that is out, the door sits proud, springs back open, or needs a shove to latch. The machine will not start until it senses a proper close, so this fault stops everything.

Look before you lever

The first check is obstruction, because it is common and it is free. Pull the lower rack out and look at the door lip and the tub aperture. Items that stick up, a rack that has jumped its runner, a piece of cutlery in the door channel, or hardened food on the strike plate can all hold the door open by a few millimetres, which is enough.

Also check the door seal. A seal that has lifted out of its channel at one corner will bunch up and stop the door seating. Pressing it back into the channel may be all that is needed.

The catch and strike plate

The catch is the hook or latch on the door that engages the strike on the tub frame. It wears, and the strike plate can shift. Symptoms of catch wear: the door closes but needs a firm push, or closes and then pops open when the machine starts and the tub flexes.

Plastic catches on older machines become brittle and can snap. A broken catch usually means replacement, and it is model-specific.

Hinges and alignment

A dishwasher door is heavy and is held by two hinges with springs that counterbalance it. When a hinge pin wears or a spring fatigues, the door drops on one side. Closing it then requires force, the seal compresses unevenly, and the catch may not line up.

Check by closing the door gently and looking at the gap around the aperture. An even gap suggests alignment is fine. A wedge-shaped gap, or a door that falls open rather than staying part-way, points at the hinges or springs.

Hinge replacement means removing the door, which is a two-person job in practice because of the weight and the spring tension. That is not something to attempt alone with a screwdriver.

Tub and frame distortion

Rarer, but real: a machine that has been badly overloaded, stood on, or installed on an uneven floor can have a distorted frame that stops the door meeting the aperture. If the machine rocks when pushed, check the feet and levelling first, since a twisted cabinet can hold a door out of square.

What we do on the visit

We clear any obstruction, check the seal seating, test the catch engagement, inspect the hinge pins and springs, and check the machine is level. Where adjustment is possible we adjust; where a part is worn or broken we quote it. We will tell you if the issue is a levelling problem rather than a failed component, which is a cheaper answer.

Scope and safety

We work on the door and its fittings. We do not force a distorted tub back into shape, and we will not bodge a catch with tape or a screw in a new position, since the interlock is a safety device and it needs to work as designed. Power is isolated before any work on the door electrics, and only where the socket is safely accessible.

Aftercare

After the repair, close the door several times and confirm it latches with a firm, even action, then run a short cycle to confirm the machine accepts the close and starts. If the door has been adjusted, check the seal for leaks during that first wash.

Booking

Tell us whether the door springs back, sits proud, or needs a shove, and whether anything visible is in the way. A photograph of the gap helps. Book online with the brand and model, pay the booking fee at booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A door that will not close leaves the machine unusable, because the interlock will not let a cycle start. Sometimes there is something simple in the way, such as a rack pushed forward or a seal that has come loose at one corner. Sometimes the hinges have dropped. Either way it is a physical problem with a physical answer.

Questions people ask about dishwasher door not closing

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is there anything I can check before booking?

Yes. Pull the lower rack out, look for anything obstructing the door lip or strike plate, and check the seal has not lifted out of its channel. Pressing a loose seal back in sometimes solves it.

How do I know if the hinges have gone?

Close the door gently and look at the gap around the aperture. An uneven, wedge-shaped gap, or a door that drops open rather than holding part-way, points at worn hinges or springs.

Can I replace the catch myself?

The part is often simple, but it is also part of the interlock, which is a safety device. If the replacement is not fitted correctly the machine may run with the door not properly secured, so we would not recommend it.

The machine rocks on the floor. Does that matter?

It can. A twisted cabinet holds the door out of square and can stop it latching. Checking the feet and levelling is part of the diagnosis and is a cheaper fix than new hinges.

What will it cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work starts, with catches, hinges or seals identified and quoted separately.
