A dishwasher can have water in the sump, complete its cycle, drain normally, and still never spray a drop onto the load. The circulation pump moves water from the sump up through the spray arms. When that path fails, the machine sounds like it is working and does nothing useful.

Confirming the symptom

Open the door mid-cycle, carefully, and look. If the water in the sump is still and the arms are not moving, circulation has stopped. If the water level is very low, the pump may be running dry. If the arms are turning but the dishes are still dirty, the fault is elsewhere and the diagnosis changes.

Check that the machine is actually filling first, because a no-spray complaint sometimes turns out to be a no-fill. Water in the tub but no spray is the circulation fault; a dry tub is a fill fault.

The circulation path

  • Wash pump: the main circulation pump, which pressurises water into the arms.
  • Filter housing and sump: the intake, which can block and starve the pump.
  • Diverter: on machines with alternating spray, a valve that switches flow between the upper and lower arms.
  • Arm supply tube: the duct from the pump housing up to the arms, which can crack or come adrift.
  • Arm hubs: where the arm meets the supply, which can leak pressure away.

A failure anywhere in that chain reduces or eliminates spray, and the symptom is broadly the same: clean water, no cleaning.

Testing the pump

With the machine isolated we check whether the pump runs, whether it draws current, and whether it produces flow. A pump that hums without turning is jammed or seized. A pump that runs silently and produces no flow may have a broken impeller, which happens on older machines and is not visible from outside.

The diverter is tested by observing whether the upper and lower arms alternate. If one arm never receives water, the diverter is the suspect rather than the pump.

Water level matters

A wash pump needs enough water to work with. If the fill is under-delivering, the pump draws air, makes a harsh noise and sprays weakly. We check the level against the machine's normal mark, because a weak spray is often a fill problem rather than a pump problem.

The arm supply

On some machines the tube feeding the upper arm runs up the back of the tub. If it cracks or separates, water pours back into the tub instead of reaching the arm, and the upper rack stays dirty while the lower one is fine. That pattern is diagnostic and worth mentioning.

Parts and replacements

Wash pumps, diverters and supply tubes are model-specific. Some are available quickly; some require ordering. We identify against your model number and quote separately. A pump replacement on an older machine can approach the value of the machine, and we will say so rather than pushing it.

Safety

Circulation work requires power and water isolation, and only where both are safely accessible. If the machine makes a grinding noise, trips the electrics, or has water in the base tray, stop using it. Running a pump dry damages it quickly, so do not keep starting cycles hoping it recovers.

Aftercare

After the repair we run a cycle with a light load and inspect both racks, confirming spray reaches the upper as well as the lower. Check the filter before the next few washes, since debris that jammed the pump may return. If the diverter was replaced, listen for the alternating spray during the wash.

Booking

Tell us whether there is water in the tub, whether the arms move, and which rack is worst affected. Book online, with the booking fee paid at booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work begins.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

A machine that fills and drains but leaves everything dry and dirty has water in the tub and none reaching the dishes. That narrows the fault to the circulation side: the wash pump, the diverter that feeds the arms, or the arm supply itself. It is a distinct fault from a fill problem and needs a different set of tests.

Questions people ask about dishwasher not spraying water

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

How do I know if water is reaching the dishes?

Open the door carefully mid-cycle and look at the water and the arms. If the sump has water but the arms are still, circulation has failed. If the tub is dry, it is a fill fault instead.

Could it be the diverter rather than the pump?

Yes. If one rack is clean and the other is not, the diverter or the arm supply tube is a strong suspect. We test whether the arms alternate during a wash before quoting a pump.

Is it safe to keep running it?

Running a pump with too little water damages it, so repeated attempts make things worse. If there is a grinding noise, tripping or water at the base, stop and isolate it.

Will you have the pump in stock?

Not always. Wash pumps vary by model, and some need ordering. We will tell you the availability and whether the job runs to a second visit rather than suggesting it will complete in one.

What will it cost?

The booking fee is taken when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with the pump, diverter or tube identified and quoted separately.
