Flow and Pressure Are Not the Same Thing

Pressure is the force pushing water through the pipe; flow is the volume that actually arrives. A property can have good static pressure and still deliver a poor flow if the pipe bore is restricted, a valve is partly closed or a filter is clogged. That distinction matters, because adding a pump or a larger pipe will not help if the restriction is a blocked strainer, and cleaning the strainer will not help if the incoming main is undersized.

Where Restrictions Occur

The stopcock or inside stop valve. Partly closed, seized or furred up, it can throttle the whole supply. Older gate valves often fail with the gate stuck half open.

A blocked strainer or filter. Many combination boilers and some taps have inlet strainers that collect grit and scale. A clogged aerator on a tap does the same on a smaller scale.

Scale. In hard water areas, limescale narrows pipes, coats heat exchanger surfaces and blocks shower heads. It builds where water is heated or where flow is slow.

A failed flexi hose or isolation valve. Flexible connectors can collapse internally, and quarter-turn isolation valves are notorious for seizing or for their bore being smaller than the pipe.

Pipework sized for a different demand. A long run of small-bore pipe to a new bathroom, or a shared supply split between several outlets, limits what can be delivered.

A mains supply issue. Low pressure in the street, a shared communication pipe or a leak on the supply can all reduce flow, and that is the water undertaker's responsibility.

What We Measure

We test flow at the outside tap or kitchen tap as a baseline, then at outlets further into the property, and compare. We check whether the stopcock is fully open, inspect strainers and aerators, and look at the age and bore of visible pipework. On a combi boiler, we compare the flow at a hot tap with the incoming cold flow to see whether the restriction is before or inside the appliance. Where the supply itself looks weak, we explain how to approach the water company, because that is outside our scope.

Fixing the Internal Causes

Cleaning or replacing a strainer, aerator or isolation valve is often quick and makes a noticeable difference. Replacing a seized stopcock restores full bore. Descaling a shower head or tap is a homeowner task with the right product, following the maker's instructions. Where scale has narrowed pipe, replacing the affected run is more reliable than trying to dissolve it. If the restriction is at the boiler's inlet filter, that is water-side and within our scope; if it involves gas components, we stop and refer to a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Where flow is adequate but pressure at an upstairs outlet is poor, the answer may be a pipe run upgrade rather than a repair, and we will quote that as a defined piece of work rather than a vague improvement.

What We Will Not Claim

We will not promise that cleaning a filter solves every weak-flow complaint. If the incoming main delivers poor flow, no internal repair will change that. We also will not fit a booster pump without establishing why flow is low, because pumping against a restriction can make noise and wear worse without solving the problem. And if the property has lead or old steel supply pipe, we will flag it and explain the options rather than simply working around it.

Safety Notes

Work on the incoming supply means turning water off at the stopcock and being careful with any electrical equipment nearby. If a leak appears while we are working, we isolate and make safe. We do not work on gas supply pipework or gas appliance components; those are Gas Safe matters. If you smell gas, do not use switches or flames, ventilate if safe, leave and call 0800 111 999.

After the Work

We run each outlet after the repair and show you the difference in flow, so you can see the result rather than take it on trust. We will also point out any other restricted outlets we noticed, so you can decide whether to deal with them now or later.

Book a Flow Investigation

Tell us which outlets are weak, whether it is hot, cold or both, when it started, and your boiler make and model. We serve the West Midlands and may have same-day availability, though it is never guaranteed. Booking fee payable up front, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us, and you approve the full quoted cost before any work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Weak flow at a tap or shower is frustrating, and the cause is not always inside the property. Sometimes the supply itself is constrained, and sometimes a filter, valve or scaled fitting is doing the damage. We will measure flow at several points to establish where the restriction sits, then tell you honestly whether it is our work or the water company's.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Questions people ask about restricted water flow

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I check anything myself before booking?

Yes. Check that the stopcock is fully open, unscrew and clean the tap aerator, and look at whether only one outlet is affected. If flow is poor at every outlet, the cause is further back and needs measuring.

How do you tell a supply problem from an internal one?

We compare flow at the first outlet after the incoming main with outlets further along. If it is weak at the first point, the supply or stopcock is the likely limit; if it drops later, an internal restriction is responsible.

Will a new boiler fix low flow?

Not necessarily. A boiler cannot deliver more than the supply provides, and a combi's flow rate is limited by its own capacity. We measure before recommending anything, so money is not spent on the wrong fix.

Do you work on the water company's pipe?

No. The communication pipe and mains supply are the water undertaker's responsibility. We will tell you when the evidence points that way and what to report to them, but we do not alter their equipment.

What does the visit cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us. You approve the full cost before work starts. Strainers, valves or replacement pipe are identified and quoted separately.
