How Air Gets In

A sealed heating system should not contain air. When it does, there is a route in, and finding it is the difference between a one-off bleed and a repeat visit.

  • Bleeding radiators. Opening a bleed valve releases air but also drops pressure. If the system is not refilled properly afterwards, the next heating cycle can draw air in through joints.
  • A failing automatic air vent. These sit at high points and vent small amounts of air. When the float sticks or the cap is closed, air accumulates instead.
  • Suction through joints. A weep can draw air in when the pump runs, particularly on the negative-pressure side of the circuit, without ever leaking water visibly.
  • Pump cavitation. If the pump is set too high for the system, or the feed is restricted, it can draw air out of solution and create noise and poor circulation.
  • Corrosion gases. Sludge produces gas as it forms, which collects at high points and in radiators.
  • Recent drain-down. Refilling a system always traps some air, which takes several cycles and bleeds to clear.

What It Sounds and Feels Like

Gurgling or trickling at the boiler, ticking or banging pipes as they heat, and radiators that are warm at the bottom but cool at the top are the usual signs. A pump may become noisy, and in bad cases the boiler can cycle or lock out because flow is interrupted. None of it is dangerous, but the same conditions that trap air also stress the pump and reduce efficiency, so resolve it early.

Bleeding a Radiator Safely

If you want to try it, the system should be cool. Use a radiator key on the bleed valve at the top of the radiator, turn it slowly and listen for the hiss. Close it as soon as water appears. Work through the radiators, starting with the lowest and finishing with the highest, then check the boiler pressure and top up to the cold figure in the manual if needed. Do not open the valve fully or leave it open, and do not bleed a system that is running hot.

If a radiator still has a cold top after bleeding, or if water does not appear at all, stop and book a visit. That pattern suggests a blocked valve or a bigger air pocket than a bleed valve can clear.

How We Diagnose the Cause

We ask when the noise occurs, whether it started after work on the system, and whether pressure has been dropping. On site we bleed the radiators and observe what comes out: a short hiss of air is normal, while repeated air or dirty water tells a different story. We check the automatic air vents, the pump speed setting and the feed to the boiler, and look for weeps at joints on the suction side. We also assess the water quality, because gassing from corrosion looks the same as air ingress until you test for it.

Repairs That Stop the Return

Depending on what we find, the fix may be replacing a stuck automatic air vent, correcting the pump setting, resealing a joint that is drawing air, replacing a faulty pump seal, or cleaning a sludged system that is producing gas. Where a radiator's bleed valve is blocked or broken, we replace it. Where a high point in the pipework has no vent at all, fitting one may be the sensible long-term answer, though that is a modification we would quote separately.

Limits We Are Straight About

We cannot promise that one bleed will solve a system that is drawing air through a hidden joint or generating gas from corrosion. Those need the cause addressed, and sometimes more than one visit to confirm it has stopped. If a radiator has to come off the wall or a floor has to be opened, we will explain before starting. Materials such as vents, valves and pump parts are quoted separately, with compatibility confirmed first.

Safety and the Gas Boundary

Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and does not carry out gas work. Air in a heating circuit is a water-side matter, but if the boiler shows a fault that points to combustion, the flue or gas components, we stop and recommend a Gas Safe registered engineer. Never open a boiler casing to bleed a pump yourself. Where gas is suspected, avoid switches and flames, ventilate if possible and ring 0800 111 999 from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside into fresh air and do not re-enter until advised it is safe.

Book an Air and Noise Diagnosis

Tell us your boiler make and model, where the noise occurs, which radiators are affected and whether you have bled them already. Our West Midlands diary occasionally has same-day space, which we will offer if we can but never promise. We take the booking fee up front, hourly labour varies with how soon you want us there, with the full cost quoted for your approval before starting.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Air in a heating system announces itself: gurgling pipes, a radiator that is hot at the bottom and cold at the top, and sometimes a pump that sounds like it is moving gravel. Bleeding the radiator is the obvious first step, but air has to get in from somewhere. We will clear it, check the components that should keep it out, and explain whether your system has an ongoing problem.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Questions people ask about air in heating system

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I bleed my radiators myself?

Yes, with the system cool and a radiator key. Open the valve slowly, close it when water appears, and check the boiler pressure afterwards. Stop if nothing comes out or the radiator stays cold at the top, as that points to a bigger issue.

What do you check when air keeps coming back?

We bleed the radiators and look at what is released, test the automatic air vents, check pump speed and the feed, inspect suction-side joints for weeps, and assess whether corrosion is generating gas. That usually identifies the route air is taking.

Is air in the system dangerous?

Not directly, but it reduces efficiency and strains the pump, and persistent air often signals a leak or corrosion. Any boiler fault that suggests a combustion or flue problem is different: stop and call a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Why does the radiator heat only at the bottom?

Air collects at the top, so the upper part stays cool while the bottom warms. Bleeding usually resolves it. If the cold area is at the bottom instead, that is more likely sludge, which needs flushing rather than bleeding.

How much does the visit cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us. We confirm the full cost and you approve it before work begins. Vents, valves and pump parts are quoted separately.
