Every wall collects holes: rawl plug holes from fittings that moved on, screw holes from shelving that left, cable exits where a socket was rerouted, picture hook holes going back years. Individually they are trivial; collectively they make a wall look shabby. Filling them is one of the quickest satisfying wins in home maintenance — but the difference between a fill that disappears and one that shows as a shiny dimple under paint comes down to material, depth and patience.
Matching the fill to the hole
Small screw and plug holes need only a fine finishing filler worked well into the hole. Medium holes — removed anchors, small gouges — need a filler with some body, applied so it sits marginally proud and then sanded flush, because filler shrinks slightly as it dries. Larger holes are a different job: once a hole is big enough that filler has nothing to bridge, it needs a patch approach rather than a fill, and we will tell you if that applies. Holes in plasterboard with a void behind, and holes big enough to see daylight or a cavity, are covered under our larger wall repair work.
The assessment
We look at the size and depth of each hole, the wall construction behind it, and the condition of the surrounding plaster. Two practical checks matter. First, what the holes are near: if the damage follows a leak, is paired with damp staining, or there are cracks that suggest movement, filling would hide a problem that needs a specialist — we stop and advise instead. Second, services: where holes sit near sockets, switches or plumbing, we take care rather than assume, and anything unexpected stops work until it is understood.
How the filling is done
The hole is cleaned out — dust and crumbled material leave nothing for filler to grip. The right filler goes in: fine filler for small holes, a deeper-fill or patching product where more body is needed. Deep fills are built in layers where necessary, because a single thick application sinks and cracks as it dries. Each layer gets proper drying time. Once fully dry, everything is sanded back flush with the surrounding wall and the dust is cleared.
The drying is the part that surprises people. A small fill may be ready in a few hours; a deeper fill wants overnight or longer, and a second skim may be needed after the first has shrunk. If drying runs past the visit, we explain what remains and when it will be ready for decoration.
Decoration is separate
A filled wall is ready for decoration, not decorated. Fresh filler absorbs paint differently from the surrounding wall, so touch-up paint often shows as a patch — the honest advice is usually to repaint the whole wall. Paint matching and decorating are not automatically included in a filling visit; if you want them, we can discuss it when you book.
Booking a filling visit
A typical visit covers the holes you list, in the rooms agreed — count them roughly when booking, because a dozen small holes and one large hole are different jobs. Same-day visits may be available for straightforward filling. You pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.
If fittings have left holes because they were badly fixed in the first place, it is worth refitting them properly before you redecorate — otherwise the new paint comes off again when the item is rehung. We can advise on that in the same visit, and it is usually a small addition to the job.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Leftover holes from old fixings, rerouted cables or removed fittings make a wall look tired long before anything is actually wrong. Filling them well is a small job with a satisfying result — provided the right filler is used, given proper drying time, and sanded back flush.

Questions people ask about wall hole filling
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is filling wall holes a sensible DIY job?
Small screw and plug holes are about the friendliest DIY job there is — fine filler, a flexible scraper, patience with drying. It goes wrong when holes are deeper than they look, when filler is applied too thickly in one go, or when the hole is actually a symptom of damp or movement. If in doubt, an assessment first is cheap peace of mind.
What do you check before filling a hole?
We check the size and depth of each hole, what the wall is made of, and whether the surrounding plaster is sound. We also look at the context — damp staining, cracks, or anything that suggests the hole has a cause. Anything pointing to a structural or moisture problem is flagged rather than filled over.
Is there a size limit on what you will fill in one visit?
Yes. Fine for screw holes and small to medium holes; larger holes need a patch-type repair with board or plaster, which is a different and longer job. If a hole is big enough to see a cavity or daylight, we will explain the proper repair approach rather than trying to bridge it with filler.
Why does my last filler repair show as a shiny patch under paint?
Two usual reasons: the fill was not sanded perfectly flush, or it was painted before fully drying so it absorbed paint differently. Fresh filler also needs priming or a couple of coats before it blends. Repainting the whole wall rather than touching up is the most reliable way to make a repair disappear.
How much does hole filling cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost for the holes agreed is quoted before work starts and you approve it. If a hole turns out to need patching materials rather than filler, that is identified and quoted separately.
