A crack is the wall's way of saying something, and the message ranges from "nothing to worry about" to "get this looked at". New plaster shrinks and cracks hairlines around doors and window reveals. Buildings settle and move with the seasons. But cracks can also announce structural movement, failed lintels, or damp forcing its way through — and filling one of those over is the worst possible response, because it hides the evidence while the cause carries on.
Telling cosmetic cracks from concerning ones
Cosmetic cracks tend to be hairline to a couple of millimetres wide, run in the plaster rather than through the structure, sit at known weak points — board joints, around lintels, corners of door and window openings — and stay stable over months. Concerning cracks look different: they are wider and growing, run diagonally or step across brick or block courses, appear the same inside and out, pair with doors and windows that start sticking, or come with damp staining. A crack that reopens after being filled is also telling you something.
Our assessment comes before any filler
We look at the crack's width, direction and pattern, check whether it runs through the plaster only or through the structure, examine the surrounding wall for damp or bulging, and ask what has changed recently — new windows, removed walls, a nearby tree, plumbing works. If the crack looks cosmetic, we proceed. If it looks like movement, we stop and recommend a structural engineer or building surveyor before any repair is attempted. If it comes with water ingress, a damp specialist is the right call. And if the wall carries older textured coatings we suspect could contain asbestos, we will not disturb them — that needs a licensed contractor.
How cosmetic cracks are repaired
A hairline shrinkage crack is opened up slightly — raked out along its length — so filler has something to key into, brushed clean, then filled with a suitable filler; flexible filler where the joint may move slightly, rigid where it will not. Cracks along plasterboard joints are re-taped and filled, which is more durable than filling bare. Wider cosmetic cracks may need mesh or tape embedded in the fill to spread the stress. Everything is dried properly, sanded flush, and cleared of dust.
One honest caveat: even a well-repaired cosmetic crack can reappear if the wall continues to move seasonally, which is why flexible filler and modest expectations matter at known movement points.
What the visit covers
The estimate is for assessing and repairing the cosmetic cracks you describe. If assessment shows the cracks need a specialist first, we tell you — and the right response is a survey, not a repair. Decoration is not automatically included: a repaired crack needs priming and repaint to blend, usually across the whole wall, and that is separate work we can quote if wanted.
Aftercare
Keep an eye on repaired cracks through the seasons. If one reopens, widens, or spreads, photograph it with something beside it for scale and get it reassessed — that history is valuable to any surveyor later.
Booking
Same-day visits may be available for straightforward cosmetic repairs. Book at maintenance-men.com: you pay a booking fee on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Repair materials, where needed beyond standard filler, are identified and quoted separately.
Photographing a crack when you first notice it, with a coin or ruler beside it for scale, is genuinely useful. If it changes over the following weeks, those dated photos give any later surveyor a clear record of whether the crack is stable or progressing — and that is exactly the question a specialist needs answered.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A crack in a wall is either trivial or telling, and telling them apart matters before any filler comes out. Hairline cracks from shrinkage can be filled and forgotten; stepped, widening or damp-linked cracks need a specialist's opinion first. We make that judgement honestly and only repair what is genuinely cosmetic.

Questions people ask about cracked wall repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I just fill a wall crack myself?
For a stable hairline crack in plaster, yes — rake it slightly, fill it, done. The judgement call is whether the crack is stable and cosmetic, and that is exactly what people get wrong. If the crack is wide, stepped, growing, or damp-affected, filling it hides the evidence a surveyor needs — get it assessed first.
What do you look for when assessing a crack?
We check its width, direction and pattern, whether it runs through plaster only or through the structure, and the wall around it for damp or bulging. We also ask what has changed recently — building work, plumbing, new openings. Anything suggesting movement or water ingress means we stop and recommend a specialist.
What happens if you think the crack is structural?
We stop and tell you plainly. Structural movement needs a structural engineer or building surveyor to diagnose, not a handyman with filler, and repairing before diagnosis can make a survey harder. If the crack involves ongoing water ingress, a damp specialist is the right referral. We would rather lose a job than paper over a real problem.
Will a filled crack stay filled?
A stable cosmetic crack filled properly should stay closed. Cracks at movement points — board joints, around lintels — can reappear seasonally, which is why we sometimes use flexible filler and manage expectations. If a repair reopens or grows, that changes its classification and it should be reassessed promptly.
How is a crack repair priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit — urgent visits differ from planned ones. The full cost of the agreed repair is quoted before work starts and you approve it. Any special materials, such as tape or mesh for wider cracks, are identified and quoted separately.
