The usual suspects behind a leaking fridge

Most fridge leaks are meltwater that has nowhere to go. Fridges shed condensation and defrost water through a drain channel at the back of the cabinet, which leads to a small evaporation tray above the compressor. When that channel blocks with food debris or freezes over, water pools inside and eventually finds the floor.

Other common causes: the cabinet is tilted the wrong way so the door swings open slightly and condensation runs outwards; the door seal is worn, so humid air condenses heavily inside and overwhelms the drain; or the evaporation tray is cracked, dislodged or overflowing. On models with a water dispenser or ice maker, a supply connection, filter or line joint can also weep — those are checked separately because they behave differently from a cabinet leak.

What we check on the visit

The engineer starts by establishing what the water actually is: plain meltwater behaves differently from a dispenser line leak, and the pattern of the puddle helps — front, back or under the middle. We check the level and footing of the appliance, the door seals, the drain channel and its outlet, the drain tray, and where present the water supply connections and filter housing.

If the leak traces to the cooling system itself, such as ice melting off components because of a deeper fault, we explain what that means for the diagnosis. Sealed refrigerant work is specialist work we do not carry out, and we will say so plainly if that is where the evidence leads.

Damage control while you wait

Mop the floor and put a waterproof tray under the front of the appliance as a stopgap, and move anything water-sensitive away from the area. If the fridge is tilted, do not attempt to move it alone — they are heavier than they look and the pipework at the back is easily damaged. Photograph the puddle and its edges before mopping, since the shape and position are genuinely useful diagnostic clues. If water is coming from a dispenser line and the connection is accessible behind the appliance, turning the supply tap off is reasonable; anything beyond that, leave to us.

Repairs we typically carry out

A blocked drain channel is cleared, and where it keeps freezing over we address the underlying airflow or defrost cause. Drain trays are refitted or replaced where the correct part is identified. Re-levelling the cabinet so it drains correctly takes minutes once we are there. Worn seals are replaced with the model-correct part. Dispenser and ice-maker leaks are traced to the joint, filter or line and repaired where the part is available — model-specific components are quoted separately, with availability depending on the manufacturer.

Preventing a repeat

Keep strong-smelling or crumb-prone food covered, because debris migrating to the drain is a common blockage trigger. When cleaning, flush the drain channel with warm water only, never chemicals. Check periodically that the fridge is still level and that the seal grips cleanly all round. If you defrost manually, mop the cabinet dry before restarting so the drain is not overwhelmed on the first cycle.
