Not all frost means the same thing

Some frost is normal life: moisture from the air settling on the coldest surfaces, especially if the door is opened often in a humid kitchen. Heavy or rapidly returning frost is different. On a manual-defrost appliance it usually means moisture is entering faster than it should — through a leaking door seal, a door left ajar, or warm food going in uncovered. On a frost-free model, thick frost on the back wall or around the vents points to a failed defrost heater, sensor or timer, because that cycle should be melting frost away automatically.

Frost around the door frame itself is a tell-tale sign of a seal or alignment problem. Frost deep inside, choking the vents and shrinking the airflow, is more likely a defrost system fault. Where the frost appears tells us where to look.

What we check on the visit

The engineer inspects the door seals for gaps, cracks and loss of grip, and checks the doors close and hold shut under their own weight. We look at the frost pattern, the drainage channels and the vents, and on frost-free models we test the defrost heater, sensor and timer circuit. We also consider how the appliance is used — frequent openings, uncovered liquids, a hot kitchen — because behaviour can contribute as much as hardware.

If everything points to the sealed refrigerant system rather than frost and airflow, we say so plainly: that is specialist work, including any refrigerant recharge, that we do not carry out.

Safe defrosting in the meantime

If you want to clear the ice before we arrive, unplug the appliance, remove the drawers, and let it defrost with the doors open — putting towels down and placing bowls of hot water inside speeds it up safely. Never chip at ice with knives or metal tools, which puncture the lining and can turn a repairable fault into a written-off appliance. A full manual defrost often resets a marginal situation and sometimes reveals how quickly the frost returns, which is useful diagnostic information for us.

Repairs we typically carry out

Door seal replacement is one of the most common frost-related fixes and is quoted on the spot once the correct seal is identified for your model. Defrost heaters, sensors and timers on frost-free models are also commonly repairable; parts are model-specific, so we identify the right component and quote it separately, with availability depending on the manufacturer. Blocked or frozen drain channels are cleared as part of the visit. If the underlying fault turns out to be sealed-system related, we will tell you honestly and set out your options including replacement.

Aftercare

Once the cause is fixed, keep liquids covered, let hot food cool before it goes in, and wipe the seals occasionally so they grip cleanly. On manual-defrost appliances, defrost before the ice reaches around the thickness of a fingertip. Do not scrape, and do not use hairdryers or heaters near the cabinet with the appliance plugged in. Defrost overnight so the appliance is empty and dry by the time we arrive, and wipe the interior down before restarting it.

Booking your visit

Call or use our contact form with the brand and model number, whether it is a frost-free or manual-defrost model, and where the frost collects — back wall, vents, or around the door. Tell us if you have defrosted it already and how quickly the ice returned. The booking fee is paid when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Ice where ice should not be is more than a nuisance: it eats storage space, strains the motor and usually signals an underlying fault. Our visit finds what is letting moisture in or stopping the defrost cycle, whether that is a tired seal, a failed defrost component or a blocked drain. You get a clear diagnosis and a firm quote before any work begins.

Questions people ask about excessive frost build-up

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is some frost normal?

A light, slow-growing frost on a manual-defrost appliance is normal, especially with frequent door openings. Heavy frost, or ice returning quickly after a defrost, points to a fault worth diagnosing.

What is the safest way to defrost it myself?

Unplug the appliance, open the doors and let it thaw naturally with towels down and bowls of hot water inside. Never use knives or metal tools to chip ice — a punctured lining usually writes the appliance off.

Why does my frost-free freezer have frost at all?

Frost-free models should melt frost automatically, so heavy build-up usually means a failed defrost heater, sensor or timer. We test those components during the visit.

Will a new door seal fix it?

If the frost is forming around the door and the seal is worn or the door is out of alignment, a new seal or an adjustment often fixes it. We confirm the cause before quoting rather than assuming.

How much does it cost to diagnose and repair?

A booking fee is paid when you book to secure the appointment. Labour is at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts. Parts and materials are identified and quoted separately if needed.
