Exterior walls take the rain, frost, wind and accidental knocks that the inside of your home never sees. A chipped brick or hairline crack can be cosmetic; a bulging wall or a crack that steps diagonally through the masonry can be a structural warning. The trick is telling the two apart, repairing the cause as well as the surface, and choosing materials that work with the wall you actually have. Here is how our assessment and repair works.

What commonly goes wrong

Water is the leading cause of exterior wall damage. It runs down from leaking gutters, saturates porous brick and mortar, enters cracked render and expands in frost, gradually loosening surfaces and opening joints. Impact from vehicles, bins, garden tools and ladders chips brickwork and cracks render. Age erodes mortar joints until rain sits in the recesses and works deeper. Ground levels raised by new paving can bridge the damp course and draw moisture up into the wall. And sometimes the wall itself moves: settlement, subsidence, failed wall ties or a failing lintel can crack the masonry from within.

How we assess it

We start with the whole elevation. We look at the damage in context — where it sits, how deep it goes, whether it passes through the brick or just the surface, and what is above or below it. We check inside at matching positions for damp or cracks, note what the gutters and downpipes are doing, and inspect ground levels, sills, copings and openings for the routes water might be using. If the wall is bowed, or if a crack is large, stepped and growing, we treat it as structural: make safe, record what we find and refer you to a structural engineer. We do not patch over a movement problem.

Repair options

For local damage on a sound wall, the repair is targeted: cracked bricks are cut out and replaced with matching units, loose pointing is raked out and renewed with mortar appropriate to the wall's age and construction, small render cracks are filled with compatible materials, and chipped corners are repaired where a neat, durable result is possible. If damage is more widespread, we agree a defined repair area and use materials that match as closely as practical — exact matches in old brickwork are not always available, and we will explain the visual result before you decide.

Any cause is repaired at the same time: leaking gutter joints, cracked sills, failed seals, blocked drainage and raised ground levels. New mortar laid over a leaking gutter is an invoice for next year's repeat job.

Safety, access and limits

External work needs suitable dry conditions for mortar and render to cure properly. We use appropriate access equipment and never walk fragile roofs or improvise unsafe access; some high-level work may need scaffolding or a roofing specialist, and we will say so. If old panels, soffits or roofing material could contain asbestos, we do not disturb them and will recommend testing and specialist removal.

We cannot guarantee that a repaired wall will never crack again — buildings move with the seasons and weather varies. But fixing the water route and using compatible materials gives the repair the best chance of lasting, and we explain the aftercare you can do.

Aftercare and booking

Keep gutters clear, inspect mortar and render each spring and seal small cracks before frost opens them. Book through maintenance-men.com or by phone. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts and materials quoted separately. Tell us where the damage is, what you think caused it and whether it has changed.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Outside wall damage is more than an eyesore: cracks and missing mortar invite water, and water quietly makes the damage larger. Our visit finds out what failed and why, repairs what is within scope, and tells you plainly when something structural needs an engineer instead of a routine repair.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about exterior wall repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I repair minor exterior wall damage myself?

A few sound-wall mortar joints or a small render hairline are reasonable DIY if you have the right compatible materials and safe ground-level access. Don't attempt repairs above a ladder's safe reach, don't use hard cement on old soft brick, and don't fill a crack before checking whether it is moving. We can tell you honestly what is a simple repair and what needs attention.

What do you check during an exterior wall repair visit?

We inspect the damage in context and check whether it is in the surface or through the masonry, compare inside and outside, and look at gutters, sills, copings, ground levels and drainage for the cause. We also watch for structural signs such as bulging or large stepped cracks. We explain the findings and quote the repair before work starts.

What if the damage turns out to be structural?

We make the area safe, record what we have found and refer you to a structural engineer for a proper assessment. We don't hide movement under new mortar or render, because the cosmetic repair would fail and the underlying problem would continue. Once the engineer has specified the structural work, we can quote for any making-good that is within our scope.

Can you match old bricks and mortar exactly?

We match as closely as available materials allow, but aged brickwork has weathered and varied in colour over decades, so an exact match is not always possible. Mortar colour and profile can usually be blended well, and we'll show you the likely result before the repair. Replacing a whole area produces a more uniform finish than a single brick patch.

How much does exterior wall repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with parts and materials quoted separately. Larger areas or work needing scaffolding are surveyed and priced as a project before you decide.
