Setup is the stage where a collection of devices becomes a system, and it is more than running each product's quick-start guide. Quick-start guides get a device talking to an app; they rarely address whether the coverage makes sense, whether alerts go where they should, whether sensitivity suits your household and pets, or whether the automations you imagined actually behave. Proper setup asks what you want the system to do and configures everything backwards from that.

What proper setup covers

We start with your goals: what should trigger alerts, who should receive them, what should record and for how long, and what should happen automatically — lights on when the alarm sounds, cameras arming at night, whatever fits your life. Then we configure each part to serve those goals: devices paired reliably and named so the app makes sense, hub sited for signal, sensitivity and detection zones tuned to your household, alert rules set for the right people, and automations built and tested rather than left as good intentions.

Getting placement and pairing right

Where devices have already been positioned, we assess whether the positions serve them: signal measured at each device, mounting heights checked for motion sensors, camera angles and detection zones reviewed. Where placement is wrong, moving a device a short distance often transforms its reliability, and we would rather move it now than have you wonder forever why one sensor is flaky. Pairing is done cleanly, because half-paired devices are the root of a whole family of later faults.

What we configure and what we cannot control

We configure everything within your walls and within the manufacturer's apps: devices, hub, alerts, automations, user accounts and access for family members. We cannot guarantee cloud services, third-party platforms or your broadband — modern smart systems lean on all three, and their availability sits outside anyone's on-site control. We will be clear about which features depend on which services, so you know what works offline and what does not. And we do not provide monitoring or police-response arrangements; those involve separate specialist contracts if you want them.

Security during setup

Setup is also where security gets done properly or skipped. Strong, unique passwords, sensible two-factor settings where the app supports them, and controlled sharing of access with family members all belong in the setup stage — not as an afterthought when something feels wrong. We will not recommend weakened security settings to make a configuration easier, and we will explain anything you choose to enable or disable.

Handover and aftercare

A setup is not finished until you can use it. We walk you through arming and disarming, what each notification means, how to add a user or change a battery, and how to test sensors safely. Test alerts monthly, and after any phone update, check notifications still arrive — updates quietly reset permissions more often than people expect.

Booking

Book through the website or by phone, and tell us what equipment you have — makes and rough device count — what you want the system to do, and how far you got with the setup yourself. If anything is already half-configured, say so; we would rather know before we start.

Automations that are dependable

The most useful routines are the ones that are simple enough to understand and test. A routine with several conditions — location, time, alarm state and a third-party platform — can fail because any one of those dependencies changes, and it may not be obvious which part broke. We build routines with you, explain what each condition does and which services it depends on, then test the real sequence rather than just checking a green tick in the app. Keep a note of the routine names and intended actions; if a future app update changes its behaviour, that note gives us a clear starting point.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Buying smart security equipment is the easy half; making it behave as one coherent system is where most setups stall. Devices half-paired, alerts reaching the wrong phone, sensitivity tuned for nobody in particular, automations that trigger at odd hours — a half-configured system is a frustrating possession. Our setup service takes the equipment you already own and makes it work properly: paired, positioned, configured and tested end to end, with you shown how to use it.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about smart security setup

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I set up smart security myself?

Basic pairing from the manuals is achievable for most people, and it is a fair starting point. But whole-system configuration — coverage, sensitivity, alert rules, automations and access control — is where self-setup usually leaves gaps that show up later as missed alerts and flaky devices.

What does the setup service include?

Goal-based configuration of everything you own: pairing, placement assessment, hub siting, sensitivity tuning, alert rules, automations and user access, all tested end to end. We finish with a handover so you can operate the system confidently.

Can you set up alerts to reach my whole family?

Yes — most systems support multiple users with individual notifications, and setting that up properly is part of the service. We will also cover how access is shared and revoked, so everyone who should have control does, and nobody who should not.

My setup half-worked — can you pick up where I left off?

Yes, and half-configured systems are a common starting point for us. We will review what is already in place, keep what works, and rebuild what does not. Tell us what you attempted so we do not undo something that was actually fine.

How is the setup charged?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved by you before we start, with any parts quoted separately.
