Every battery-powered sensor in your system will eventually need a battery, and that is normal and honest — batteries are consumables, not faults. What is not normal is a battery that lasts weeks instead of a year, a device that dies without warning, or a rechargeable unit that will no longer hold charge. Those patterns point at causes worth diagnosing, because replacing batteries repeatedly without asking why is a treadmill that ends with the same problem every few months.
Why batteries fail early
Weak wireless signal is the biggest hidden drain: a sensor at the edge of range retries its reports constantly, and that effort consumes batteries several times faster than the manufacturer's figures assume. Cold is the second factor — garages, porches and external doors kill batteries prematurely, especially in winter, and many batteries deliver far less capacity below certain temperatures. Charging arrangements matter too: a rechargeable device on an underpowered charger may never fully charge, so it behaves like a dying battery while the battery itself is fine. And occasionally a device's own electronics degrade and drain even a fresh cell.
How we diagnose the pattern
We look at the history: which devices eat batteries, how quickly, and where they sit. We measure battery voltage under load rather than trusting the app's percentage, test signal strength at each battery-hungry device's position, and check charging setups for rechargeable units. That tells us whether you simply need fresh batteries — a perfectly honourable answer — or whether a device is being worked to death by its environment and deserves a reposition or a settings change.
Getting the batteries right
Battery type matters more than people expect: the manufacturer's specified chemistry and quality grade exist for a reason, and bargain cells often deliver a fraction of the life. We fit the right specification, label installation dates so future changes are predictable, and where rechargeable devices are involved, check that the charging arrangement actually delivers a full charge. We quote any batteries or parts separately for your approval before fitting them.
What is DIY and what is not
Swapping batteries is the most legitimately DIY task in all of smart security, and we will happily show you how, including the trick of checking contacts for corrosion. What is not DIY is opening sealed rechargeable units, replacing built-in battery packs, or anything involving soldered connections — those are engineer jobs, both for safety and because a botched battery swap can damage the device. If a built-in battery has reached the end of its life, replacing the unit may honestly be the right answer, and we will say so.
Aftercare
Keep a simple note of when each battery was changed, and check the app's device list monthly for battery warnings — but do not trust them exclusively, because they can lag reality. A device that starts reporting intermittently or slowly is often telling you its battery is on the way out, and catching it early keeps your coverage unbroken.
Booking
Book through the website or by phone, and tell us which devices are involved, roughly how long batteries have been lasting in each, and whether any sit in cold or exposed locations. If one device is a repeat offender, mention it — repeat offenders usually have a cause beyond the battery.
A practical battery schedule
Most manufacturers give a broad estimate rather than a promise, and actual life varies with signal strength, temperature, activity and battery chemistry. Treat the app's low-battery warning as a prompt to plan a replacement, not as a precise countdown. If a device has a built-in rechargeable battery, follow the specified charging interval and avoid leaving it in extreme cold. When you replace a cell, dispose of the old one through an appropriate battery recycling point rather than household waste. Small habits like these keep the system predictable and reduce the chance of a sensor disappearing without warning.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Batteries are the quiet maintenance burden of every smart security system, and battery failure is the most common reason a sensor silently disappears from your coverage. Sometimes it is simply a cell reaching the end of its life; sometimes batteries die early because something is straining the device — weak signal forcing constant retries, cold locations, or a charging arrangement that never quite works. We sort the immediate battery problem and, where there is one, the reason behind it.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about battery failure in smart devices
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is changing sensor batteries a DIY job?
Yes — it is the most sensible DIY task in smart security. Use the manufacturer's specified battery type, check contacts for corrosion while you are there, and note the date. If a device still misbehaves on a fresh battery, something else is draining it, and that is worth diagnosing.
Why do my batteries drain faster than the manufacturer claims?
Manufacturer figures assume good signal and moderate temperatures. A sensor at the edge of range retries constantly, and cold locations slash battery life. We test signal and battery health under load to find the real drain rather than blaming the cells.
Can a failing battery cause false alerts or dropouts?
Yes, frequently. A sagging battery makes sensors report intermittently, drop off the network or behave erratically long before they die completely. If a device is acting unreliably, testing its battery under load is always one of the first things we check.
Can you replace the built-in battery in my rechargeable camera?
Possibly, depending on the design — some have replaceable packs and some are sealed, and sealed units are not worth opening. If the battery is built in and worn out, we will tell you honestly whether repair is sensible or whether replacing the unit is the better answer, quoted for your approval.
How much does a battery visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved by you before we start, with any parts quoted separately.
