Movement in a deck almost always traces back to one of three places: the frame is undersized or badly braced, the posts have moved or rotted at the base, or the ground beneath the foundations has shifted. The symptom feels the same underfoot, but the causes need completely different fixes, so the first job is always diagnosis rather than guesswork.

What causes a deck to move

Undersized joists or excessive spacing between them make the surface bounce. A frame without proper bracing can rack sideways, especially on taller decks. Posts notched or bolted badly, or standing in damp ground, can lean or sink. And raised decks built on shallow foundations move when the ground beneath freezes, dries or gets saturated. Softened fixings and corroded connectors let all of that show up sooner.

How we assess it

We inspect the whole structure: frame size and spacing against what the span needs, bracing, connector condition, post bases and the ground around them. We test the deck under controlled load and watch where the movement actually originates — the surface you feel may not be the part that is failing. If what we find suggests a deeper issue, such as serious ground movement or a deck that was never built to a proper standard, we will say so and recommend where a structural engineer's input is the right next step. We make safe what we can and do not pretend a timber fix solves everything.

Making it sound

Depending on findings, the work may involve strengthening or replacing joists, adding noggins and bracing, renewing posts and their fixings, or improving how the frame is supported. Every job is quoted in full before we start — you approve the plan and the cost, and materials are itemised separately. Where the honest answer is that part of the problem needs an engineer or a specialist, that is what you will hear.

Working conditions and access

Structural deck work often means getting under or around the frame, so we need safe access and reasonably dry conditions. Wet ground under a raised deck is both a safety issue for us and misleading to assess. If weather or access means the work must wait or be staged, we will tell you and plan it sensibly rather than improvise.

What we cannot guarantee

A strengthened deck will still be a timber structure outdoors — it will move slightly with the seasons, and no one can guarantee it against future weathering. What we do promise is that we address the actual cause, work to sound construction practice, and tell you plainly when something is beyond our scope.

When to call

Treat noticeable sway, bounce or shifting as a priority. Stop using the deck for gatherings, heavy furniture or anything weight-bearing until it has been assessed — structural movement tends to accelerate once it starts.

Prevention worth knowing

Structural movement rarely appears overnight; it builds through seasons of moisture, debris and small unattended faults. Keeping the deck draining and dry underneath, clearing debris from between boards, and dealing promptly with any softness or corrosion at fixings all protect the structure. If you ever notice new movement after a very wet winter, take it seriously and get it assessed early — frames are far cheaper to brace before they shift than after. And when heavy new loads such as a hot tub are on your mind, ask us before buying, not after delivery.

How to book

Book through maintenance-men.com or by phone. The booking fee is paid when you book and labour is hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. Tell us the deck's approximate height, size and age, and describe when you notice the movement. The full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts, with materials quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A deck that sways, bounces or shifts when people walk on it is telling you something about its structure, and it is not a message to ignore. We find out what is actually moving and why, make safe anything hazardous, and give you an honest quote for the fix.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about unstable decking structure

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is an unstable deck something I can brace myself?

Adding a random brace or two rarely fixes structural movement and can mask a worsening problem. If you are confident and the deck is low, tightening visible fixings is reasonable as an interim, but genuine bracing and post work needs someone who can assess loads. We would rather diagnose it properly than have a temporary fix hide a structural issue.

What do you check when the deck feels unstable?

We check the frame size and joist spacing against the span, bracing, the condition of connectors and fixings, every post and its base, and the ground around the foundations. We also test where movement originates, because a bouncy surface can be caused by something well below the boards.

Should we stop using the deck until it is looked at?

Yes — keep groups of people, heavy furniture, planters and anything load-bearing off it until the structure has been assessed. A deck that visibly sways or shifts is already telling you its structure is compromised, and loading it speeds up the failure.

Will you involve other specialists if needed?

If the assessment points to serious ground movement, a deck built significantly outside good practice, or anything where an engineer's judgement is needed, we will say so and recommend a structural engineer's assessment rather than overreach. We can make safe what we safely can in the meantime.

How much does this kind of work cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. Because structural work varies so much, we quote the full cost after the assessment, you approve it before we start, and any timber and fixings are quoted separately as materials.
