Decking boards take a beating. Foot traffic, furniture, barbecues, frost and sunlight all work on the timber, and eventually a board can crack along a knot, split at a screw line or snap clean through. Sometimes it is one bad board; often there are two or three showing the same early signs, and it is worth dealing with them together.
Why boards break
The usual culprits are moisture movement and fixings. Boards that were laid too tight have no room to expand, so they split along the grain. Screws driven in too close to a board edge can lever it apart. UV makes the top surface brittle, and standing water softens the fibres around fixings. Occasionally a board breaks because the joist under it has rotted or moved — which is exactly why we never just swap the board without looking underneath.
How we assess the damage
We start by walking the deck and noting every board that is cracked, sprung, soft at the edges or lifting. Then we check the joists and bearers below the worst areas, because a new board screwed into soft timber will fail again in months. We look at how the deck was fixed — screws or nails, board spacing, joist centres — so any replacement matches how it was built. You get a clear explanation of what we found and a quote covering only the work you approve.
What we can do
Where the frame is sound, we replace the affected boards with matching or close-matching decking, fix them properly with appropriate corrosion-resistant screws and leave the surface flush and splinter-free. Where a few boards are borderline, we will tell you honestly which ones can wait and which will not see out another winter. If we find the problem is the frame rather than the boards, we say so and quote separately for that — patching boards over rotten joists is money wasted.
Weather and timing
Board replacement is straightforward work, but it still needs dry conditions — wet timber is slippery to work on and sealers or oils will not take in the rain. If the forecast turns, we will rearrange rather than rush a poor job.
Limits and honesty
We cannot guarantee that a repaired deck will never weather or that other boards will not fail in future — timber outdoors moves with the seasons. What we do promise is a proper diagnosis, a quote you approve before work starts, and boards replaced correctly for their position and fixing type. If the deck is old and widespread failure is likely, we will say that plainly rather than sell you a patch that will not last.
When to call
If a board has actually given way, keep people off that area until it is fixed — a broken board at a step or near a door is a genuine trip and injury risk. The sooner a split is dealt with, the less water gets into the frame.
Prevention worth knowing
Most board failures trace back to two things within a owner's control: standing debris and sealed gaps. Sweeping the deck rather than letting leaves compost between boards, keeping the gaps clear so water escapes, and re-treating the surface every couple of seasons all slow the failure rate dramatically. When we replace your boards we will point out any spacing or drainage habits that made the originals fail, so the replacements do not inherit the same fate. It is five minutes of maintenance protecting a much bigger repair bill.
How to book
Book through maintenance-men.com or by phone. The booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. If you can, tell us roughly how big the deck is, how many boards look damaged and when it was built — photos help us plan the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts, with materials quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A split or snapped decking board is more than an eyesore — it can catch a toe, give way underfoot or let water into the frame below. We come out, look at what has failed and why, and give you an honest quote for putting it right. You approve the cost before we start any work.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about broken decking boards
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I replace a decking board myself?
A confident DIYer can, but the fiddly part is matching board thickness, spacing and fixings, and getting boards out without damaging their neighbours. If the deck is screwed rather than nailed and you have spare boards, it is a reasonable job. If you are not sure, we are happy to do it properly.
What do you check when you come out?
Every board across the deck, not just the obvious break, plus the joists and bearers underneath the damaged areas. We also check fixings, board spacing and how the deck was built, because that tells us why the boards failed and whether a like-for-like repair will hold.
Is a broken board a safety problem I should treat urgently?
Yes, treat it as urgent if the board is in a walking route or near a step, and keep people off it meanwhile. A board that has snapped through can drop a heel suddenly or catch a toe, and it also lets rain straight into the frame, so delay makes the underlying damage worse.
Will the new boards match the rest of my deck?
We match the board profile and width as closely as we can and quote materials separately so you can see exactly what is being used. New timber will look different in colour from weathered boards at first; it fades towards the rest over a season or two, and we can discuss oiling to help them blend.
How much does board replacement cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. After we have assessed the deck, the full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, with any replacement boards quoted separately as materials.
