What the job involves
A wall shelf is five minutes of drilling and an hour of getting everything else right: the height, the level, the bracket positions, the fixing type, and the honest answer to how much it will carry. We fit all the common kinds — single shelves with brackets, shelves in alcoves, small wall units — on solid masonry and plasterboard alike, and we say plainly what each fixing arrangement can and cannot be asked to hold.
The assessment that decides the method
Three things drive the job. What the wall is made of: solid brick or block takes plugs and screws directly; plasterboard needs the load carried by timber studs or quality hollow-wall fixings; older plaster is checked for condition, because it can crumble around even a correct fixing. What the shelf will hold: a shelf for a plant and a shelf for encyclopedias are different jobs with different fixings. And what the shelf and brackets themselves are: most customers supply the shelf and brackets, and we work with what you have chosen, agreeing beforehand if anything about the hardware needs changing for the load.
We plan fixing positions around the usual runs of cables and pipes, and we do not drill blind into spots we are not satisfied about. If a planned position cannot take a sound fixing, we agree an alternative with you.
How we fit it
Marking comes first, and it is the part worth doing slowly: the height agreed with you, a level line across the wall — not a level line per bracket, which is how shelves end up wonky — and bracket positions evenly spaced, closer together for heavier loads. Then drilling, plugging or anchoring per the wall type, brackets screwed down tight, and the shelf sat on and checked dead level before the final fixings, including any screw through the bracket into the underside of the shelf where the design allows it.
Plasterboard honesty: a bracket-only shelf carrying real weight belongs on studs or solid wall. Where the position is fixed and the wall is hollow, we use quality hollow-wall anchors within their limits and tell you what they will and will not take — which is why the question of what is going on the shelf, asked at booking, matters.
What to have ready
The shelf, the brackets and the fixings if they came with them, plus a rough idea of what the shelf will hold. Tell us the wall type if you know it — brick, plasterboard, something older — and whether there are pipes or cables on that wall you know about. Clear the wall and the shelf's landing space, and if the shelf has a specific height for a reason — clearing a radiator, meeting a desk — say so before we mark.
Limits
A standard visit covers a typical shelf or a few small ones. A run of shelving along a whole wall, alcove units or anything needing special fixings is a longer job we will size at quoting. We do not carry out structural alterations and do not fix into chimneys, boiler casings or anything where services are live and unknown. Loads have limits, and we state them rather than guess.
Aftercare
Load a new shelf up progressively over the first week rather than stacking it to the brim on day one, and give the fixings a check after that week — anything that has eased will show as a slight tilt. Keep heavy items towards the brackets rather than mid-span, and keep water — vases, plant saucers — off bare timber shelves.
Booking
Tell us the shelf size, the wall type, roughly what it will hold, and when you want us; same-day may be available. You pay a booking fee when booking, hourly labour depends on how soon the visit is, and the full cost is agreed and approved before work starts. Any fixings or hardware needed beyond what you have supplied are identified and quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A shelf is one of those jobs where the difference between fitted and fitted properly shows up the first time you load it with books. Level matters, bracket spacing matters, and so does what is behind the plaster. We fit shelves that stay flat and hold, and we tell you honestly how much any given fixing can be asked to carry.

Questions people ask about wall shelf installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fit a shelf myself?
On a solid brick wall with the right plugs and a decent drill, many people do. The common failures are level (brackets marked one at a time), plasterboard (fixings into nothing), and overload (a shelf bought for ornaments filled with books). If any of those describe your situation, it is worth having the shelf fitted properly — a shelf that pulls out takes the wall with it.
What do you check before fitting?
We look at the wall construction at the fixing points, what the shelf will carry, and the brackets and hardware you have supplied. We mark from a level line across the whole run rather than bracket by bracket, and plan drill positions around the usual cable and pipe routes. You approve the height and position before anything is drilled.
Can shelves hold books on a plasterboard wall?
Only where the fixings can land on the timber studs or noggins inside the wall, or with quality hollow-wall anchors within their limits — and we will tell you honestly what that arrangement will carry. For a shelf of books on a hollow wall with no studs in the right place, we would suggest repositioning, a load-spreading arrangement, or a floor-standing option instead.
Do you supply the shelves and brackets?
Normally you supply the shelf and brackets, since they are a style choice, and we fit them with fixings suited to your wall. If the supplied fixings are not right for the wall type, we say so and agree substitutes, which are quoted separately as materials. If you have not bought anything yet, tell us the wall type and what it will hold and we will discuss what to look for.
How does pricing work?
There is a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted before work starts and approved by you. Any fixings or hardware needed beyond what you supply are identified and quoted separately.
