Why bathrooms are their own job

Bathroom walls hide more services than any other walls in the house. Water feeds to the basin, bath and shower, waste pipes, shaver sockets, mirror lights and, in some homes, underfloor heating — all of it inside the tile, plaster and blockwork you would be drilling through. That is what makes bathroom mirror fitting different from hanging a mirror in a hallway: the strength of the fixing is half the job, and knowing where not to drill is the other half.

What we check before anything is marked

First, the mirror: its weight, size and the fittings on its back, plus whether it is a plain mirror or an illuminated or demisting type — because that changes the scope, as below. Second, the wall: tiles over blockwork, tiles over plasterboard, or wet-wall panels, each drilled differently. Third, the services: we plan fixing positions away from the obvious routes — above and behind the basin where feeds run, near the shaver socket, and any switch or light run — using the layout of the room as the map. We cannot see through walls, so we work from what the room tells us and stay clear of the places services predictably live.

Drilling tiles without cracking them

Tiled walls need the right technique, and technique is what most DIY attempts lack. We mark through the glaze carefully, start with a tile-appropriate bit at low speed without hammer action, take it gently through the tile before switching approach for the wall behind, and keep holes away from tile edges and corners, where tiles break. Plugs and screws are then matched to the mirror's weight and the wall's construction.

Plain mirrors, illuminated mirrors, and the electrical line

A plain mirror we hang and finish — nothing else needed. An illuminated or demisting mirror changes the conversation: if it plugs into an existing shaver socket, we can usually mount it and leave the plugging-in to you, or do it if it is straightforward. If it needs new wiring, a fused spur or any connection into the lighting circuit, that is electrical work and we do not carry it out — we fit the mirror, and an electrician handles the wiring around it. We do not touch plumbing either: no moving pipes, no altering feeds, so nothing behind the tiles is disturbed.

Height and position

A bathroom mirror centres on the task: eye level for the people who use it, above the basin or the vanity, with the bottom edge a sensible span above the splashback or worktop. We hold the mirror in place for you to check the reflection before drilling. In a family bathroom where users differ by a metre of height, we discuss the compromise — usually a slightly higher centre that still works for the main users.

What to have ready

Have the mirror and its fixings out of the box, with the manufacturer's template or drilling pattern if it came with one — many do, and it makes the marking exact. Tell us if the wall is tiled, and whether the tiles are ceramic or stone, since stone takes different bits and more care. Clear the basin and the window sill below, and if the mirror is replacing an old one, tell us whether the old one is coming down too.

Aftercare in a steamy room

Wipe condensation off the frame's fixings occasionally, and clean the glass with the cleaner applied to the cloth rather than sprayed at the wall, where it runs behind the frame. Check after a few weeks that the mirror still sits level — steam is hard on anything loose. If the mirror is ever replaced, the old holes should be made good with a suitable filler rather than left open to moisture.

Booking

Tell us the mirror type — plain, illuminated, or with a cabinet — the wall finish, and when you would like us. Same-day may be available. There is a booking fee when you book, the hourly rate depends on how soon the visit is, and the full cost is confirmed with you before work starts. Any fixings or fittings required are quoted separately from the labour.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Bathroom walls are the busiest walls in the house. Behind the tiles there are usually water pipes, waste runs and electrical cables — exactly the things you do not want a drill to meet. Fitting a mirror here is less about strength and more about knowing where not to drill, plus getting a clean fixing through tile without cracking it.

Questions people ask about bathroom mirror fitting

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fit a bathroom mirror myself?

You can hang a lightweight plain mirror, but a bathroom is the one room where we would think twice: water pipes, waste runs and electrical cables cluster behind bathroom walls, and a drill in the wrong place finds them. Tiled walls also need a specific technique to avoid cracking tiles. If you know exactly where the services run and the wall is straightforward, it is a reasonable DIY job; otherwise it is worth the call.

What do you check before fitting the mirror?

We check the mirror's weight and type — plain, illuminated, or cabinet — the wall construction behind the tiles or panels, and the likely positions of pipes and cables based on the room's layout. Fixing positions are planned away from the basin feeds, the shaver socket and any light runs. Nothing is drilled until you have approved the position.

Can you fit an illuminated mirror?

We can mount one, but we do not carry out electrical work. If the mirror plugs into an existing shaver socket, that is normally straightforward; if it needs new wiring, a fused spur or a connection into the lighting circuit, that is a job for an electrician, and we fit the mirror around their work. We do not alter plumbing either, so nothing behind the tiles is disturbed.

Can you drill through tiles without cracking them?

Yes, with the right method: careful marking of the glaze, a tile-appropriate bit at low speed without hammer action, gentle pressure through the tile, and holes kept away from tile edges and corners where they break. Ceramic tiles behave well to that approach; natural stone takes more care. It is technique and patience rather than force.

How does pricing work?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost before work starts and you approve it. Any mirror fixings or anchors required are identified and quoted separately as materials.
