Why weight changes everything about hanging
A light frame asks almost nothing of a wall. A heavy mirror or a large framed canvas asks a proper question: can this wall, at this point, with this hardware, carry this weight indefinitely? Getting that wrong does not usually fail immediately — it fails months later, when vibration, settling and gravity have slowly worked a light fixing loose, and then it fails all at once. Heavy hanging is therefore less about muscle and more about matching three things: the item's real weight, the wall's construction at the fixing points, and hardware genuinely rated for the job.
The assessment before anything is drilled
We start by establishing the weight as closely as we can — a large mirror with a solid frame is a different proposition from a big but lightweight canvas, and manufacturers' specifications help where they exist. Then we read the wall: masonry takes heavy plugs and long screws; plasterboard needs fixings anchored into something solid, whether studs, cavity anchors rated for the load or other substantial ground; and any fixing point is chosen with likely pipes and cables in mind. We never drill blind, and if the wall will not take a safe fixing where you want the item, we will say so plainly and discuss moving the position or other approaches rather than compromise.
The hardware, matched to the job
Heavy items want more than a single light hook. Depending on the piece, that means substantial hooks or screws into solid ground, two fixing points rather than one, heavy-duty cavity fixings in plasterboard, or a hanging system designed for the weight. If the item came with its own hanging hardware, we use it where it is adequate; where it is not — and it sometimes is not, on items that came with a hook sized for a lighter world — we will tell you and agree a proper alternative, quoted separately from the labour if it needs supplying.
Lifting and placing safely
Getting a heavy piece off the floor and onto the wall is its own risk. Large mirrors and big frames are awkward more than heavy — wide, unwieldy and unforgiving of a slip — so for substantial pieces we work with a second person available rather than attempting a one-handed lift that risks the item, the wall and whoever is underneath. We also talk about placement sensibly: a very heavy mirror above a bed or a sofa where people sit is worth a second thought about position, and if we have concerns we will raise them rather than silently fit what was asked.
Honest limits
Some items sit at the edge of what a standard hanging visit covers — extremely heavy pieces, very large formats, or walls that need something engineered rather than fixed. Where that is the case we will say so at quoting, scope the job properly, and where necessary suggest a staged approach rather than promise a one-visit answer. What we will not do is fit a heavy item with hardware we would not trust in our own home.
What to have ready
Know the item's approximate weight if you can — packaging often states it, and it shapes the whole assessment. Have a clear route from where the item is stored to the wall, and a cleared space beneath the hanging position. Decide the position before the visit or be there to agree it at the wall; with heavy items, changing your mind after drilling is an expensive way to decorate.
Aftercare
Check a newly hung heavy item after a week and then occasionally after that: it should be exactly as we left it, and any movement, tilt or creak is worth a call while it is trivial. Keep the item's weight on its fixings rather than leaning things against it, and if you ever redecorate around it, get the item taken down and refitted properly rather than working around it on the wall.
Booking
A single heavy item on a sound wall is usually a short visit; several heavy pieces or a difficult wall takes longer, and we will scope it at quoting. Same-day availability may exist if you call early. Book with us and you pay the booking fee on booking, hourly labour depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts — any heavy-duty hardware to be supplied is quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The difference between a heavy picture and a light one is not just effort — it is a completely different fixing calculation. A large mirror or framed canvas that goes up on the wrong hardware will, in time, come down, and it will come down suddenly. We assess the load and the wall properly, fix accordingly, and lift big pieces safely with the help we need.

Questions people ask about heavy picture hanging
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I hang a heavy mirror myself?
Possibly, if you know the wall is solid, have heavy-duty fixings and a second pair of hands for the lift. The risk with heavy items is not the drilling, it is the mismatch — a hook or plug rated well below the real weight holds at first and fails months later, suddenly. Having the weight, wall and hardware assessed together is what makes heavy hanging safe rather than lucky.
What do you check before fixing a heavy item?
We establish the item's approximate weight, assess the wall construction at the fixing points, choose hardware genuinely rated for the load, and pick positions that avoid likely hidden pipes and cables. If the wall cannot take a safe fixing where you want the item, we say so and discuss alternative positions or approaches rather than compromise on the fixing.
Is it safe to hang a heavy mirror above a bed or sofa?
It can be, provided the fixing is genuinely sound and rated for the weight — but placement is worth a conversation. A very heavy piece anywhere people sleep or sit beneath deserves extra care in both fixing and position, and we will raise any concerns we have at the wall rather than fit something silently that we would not be comfortable with.
Do you bring your own fixings and hardware?
We bring fixings suited to the wall we find, but many heavy items come with their own hanging hardware, which we use where it is adequate. Where the supplied hardware is not up to the weight — which does happen — we will tell you and agree a proper alternative, quoted separately from the labour before anything is bought.
How is heavy hanging priced?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, so booking ahead usually costs less than an urgent call-out. We quote the full cost before work starts and you approve it. If special heavy-duty hardware needs supplying, that is identified and quoted separately.
