Two problems, one visit

Losing your keys is really two issues wearing one coat. The immediate one is access: you're outside, the keys aren't, and you need to get on with your day. The quieter one is security: somewhere out there is a set of keys that, if they ever meet the wrong hands along with a letter or a delivery label, could open your front door. A good outcome deals with both — first getting you inside legitimately, then deciding whether the lock should be changed so the lost set stops mattering.

Verifying the right to enter

Because lost keys and break-in techniques overlap uncomfortably, entry work starts with verification, always. We'll ask for proof that you live at the property — photo ID with the address, post addressed to you, or a neighbour who can confirm you — before we discuss methods or touch anything. It adds a few minutes to a stressful morning, and it's worth every one: it means the person working on your door has checked who you are, and it protects you from the alternative world where anyone can get a door opened by asking nicely. If we can't establish authority to enter, the work may not proceed.

How we approach entry

Once your right of entry is established, we look at the door and lock and explain the realistic options with their costs before anything is attempted. If the lock itself has failed, the job is hardware: diagnose the fault, repair or replace the affected part, and the door works again. If the lock is healthy and the keys are simply elsewhere, gaining entry through a secure working lock is a specialist task — we'll be honest about what we can help with and when a locksmith is the appropriate route, rather than promising an outcome we can't control. We don't guarantee non-destructive entry, and we don't suggest ways to defeat the lock; what we do is assess, explain and agree before acting.

Making the lost keys irrelevant

This is the half people forget until afterwards. If your keys were lost at home and might still turn up, doing nothing may be reasonable. But if they were lost out and about — in a taxi, at the station, on a walk — or if your handbag or wallet went missing with them and had anything identifying your address, replacing the lock or cylinder is usually the sensible call. A cylinder swap is a quick job and comes with new keys, which means the lost set is simply a set of keys to nothing. We'll quote for that separately from the entry work, and you decide without pressure.

What to prepare

When you call, tell us what happened to the keys and when you last had them, which door you need to enter, and what proof of residence you can lay hands on. If you have a spare key with a friend, family member or neighbour, that may resolve the access half of the problem without any work on the lock at all — always worth one phone call before booking. If a window was left open and you're considering climbing in, don't; it's dangerous and it's the wrong precedent for your own home security.

Booking and cost

You pay a booking fee on booking, and labour is charged hourly with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit — a same-day request costs more per hour than one with a day's notice, so it's worth deciding how urgently you need in. The full cost of the agreed approach is quoted and approved by you before work starts. Any replacement lock, cylinder or hardware is identified and quoted separately from the labour, and the work only proceeds once you've approved the total.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Lost house keys create two problems at once: getting back in, and knowing that whoever finds those keys can't use them. We handle both sensibly — verifying that the property is yours before anything is attempted, agreeing the approach and cost with you first, and then fitting a replacement lock or cylinder if you want the lost keys made irrelevant.

Questions people ask about lost keys entry

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I get back in myself instead of calling someone?

If there's a spare key with a neighbour or family member, absolutely — that's always the first call. Beyond that, be careful: forcing windows or doors damages them, and trying to open your own lock without the right skills can wreck the mechanism. If you do get in by a DIY route, remember the lost keys are still a security question worth sorting out.

What do you check before helping with entry?

We confirm your right to enter the property — photo ID with the address, post addressed to you at the property, or someone who can vouch for you — and we look at the door and lock to understand why entry is failing. Only then do we discuss methods and costs. If we can't establish that the property is yours, the work may not proceed.

Should I change the lock just because I lost my keys?

It depends on where they were lost. Keys missing somewhere at home may well reappear, but keys lost off the property — especially alongside anything with your address on it — are a genuine reason to replace the lock or cylinder. We'll talk it through with you and quote separately if you want the swap; there's no obligation to have it done during the same visit.

What happens if the keys are locked inside a working lock?

That's an access problem rather than a hardware fault: the lock is doing its job, so opening it without the key is a specialist task. We assess the door and tell you honestly what options exist, including when a locksmith is the right route. We don't promise entry, don't promise a no-damage outcome, and never suggest bypassing the lock — the approach is agreed with you before anything is attempted.

How does the pricing work?

You pay a booking fee on booking and labour is charged hourly, with the rate depending on how quickly you need us — urgent visits carry a higher hourly rate than ones booked with notice. Before anything is attempted we quote the full cost of the work and you approve it. If a replacement lock or cylinder is wanted, that's identified and quoted separately from the labour.
