What a broken lock actually involves
A lock can fail in several very different ways: the key turns but the bolt won't extend, the mechanism spins without catching, the cylinder works loose in the door, or the key snaps off inside. External doors usually carry a rim nightlatch or a euro cylinder working a multi-point system; internal doors mostly have simple tubular latches with a separate handle. Each of these fails differently, and each calls for a different response, so the first job is always working out precisely what has broken — not swapping parts on spec.
How we assess it
We start by looking at the door and the lock together, because a "broken" lock is sometimes a perfectly good mechanism fighting a door that has dropped or a frame that has shifted. We check whether the key turns freely, whether the bolt extends and retracts cleanly, whether the cylinder is held tight, and whether the keep on the frame still lines up with the bolt. If a key has snapped in the lock we don't poke at it with whatever is to hand — fragmenting a broken key deeper into the cylinder can turn a straightforward extraction into a full replacement. Once we can see the real fault, we tell you plainly what we've found and what the realistic options are, with the cost agreed before any work begins.
Repair or replace
Where the fault is minor — a loose cylinder screw, a jammed latch that frees with careful adjustment, a worn spindle — repair is often the sensible route, and it keeps your existing keys working. Where the mechanism is genuinely worn out, or a key has sheared inside it, replacing the cylinder or latch is usually more reliable than any patch-up. We won't replace a whole lock when a small part will do, and equally we won't waste your money adjusting something that needs changing. If a replacement is needed, we can identify a suitable one and quote for supplying it, or fit one you've already bought, provided it's the right size and type for the door.
Limitations we're upfront about
Some failures sit outside a handyman visit. Multi-point gearboxes on uPVC doors, insurance-rated nightlatches and mortice locks in non-standard sizes can need specific parts or a locksmith's skill set. If your door needs that kind of specialist attention, we'll say so rather than improvise — a bodged mechanism on a front door is worse than none. And if the frame itself has rotted or moved, a new lock won't hold for long, so we'll flag that before spending your money on hardware the door can't support.
Aftercare that keeps it working
A repaired or replaced lock stays healthy with a little care: don't force a stiff key, don't hang heavy bags off the same ring as the door key, and tell us if the action starts to feel rough again — early attention usually prevents a repeat failure. For cylinders, a dry graphite-style lubricant is generally kinder than household oil, which gums up over time. Keep the spare key somewhere sensible rather than letting it become the only key through overuse.
When to call us
A failed lock on an external door isn't a wait-until-the-weekend problem, and same-day may be available — it's worth asking when you book. Tell us the type of door and lock if you know it, and what exactly happens when you try the key. If you're locked out rather than locked in, let us know when you call so the visit is planned properly. Where new parts are needed, they're identified and quoted separately from the labour, and nothing starts until you've approved the full cost. Book online or by phone and we'll get the door secure again.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about broken door lock
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Could I fix a broken door lock myself?
Sometimes. Tightening a loose cylinder screw or freeing a sticky latch is within reach of a careful DIYer. But if the key snaps inside, the mechanism spins without engaging, or the lock is on your main external door, it's usually quicker and safer to have it assessed properly — forcing a failed lock often causes more damage and can leave a door you can't lock or open.
What do you actually check when the lock is broken?
We test the key action, the bolt, the cylinder fixing and how the bolt meets the keep on the frame. That tells us whether the fault is in the lock, the door's alignment or both. We then explain what we've found and quote for the repair or replacement before starting, so you can decide with the full picture in front of you.
Will a repaired lock still be secure enough for a front door?
We'll be straight with you. If a repair restores the lock to proper working order, it will do the job it was designed for. But if your existing lock is worn, a basic model, or the door needs a higher-specification lock to meet your insurer's requirements, we'll say so and quote for a suitable replacement rather than paper over a security weakness.
Can you get a snapped key out of the lock?
Often, yes, if the break is close to the entry point and we can grip the fragment without pushing it deeper. If the piece has travelled too far into the cylinder, extraction becomes impractical and replacing the cylinder — which comes with new keys — is the reliable answer. Either way, we agree the approach with you first.
How does pricing work for a broken lock visit?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the labour is charged hourly, with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit. Before any work starts we assess the lock and quote the full cost of the job, which you approve first. If a replacement lock or parts are needed, those are identified and quoted separately from the labour.
