When we say a drainage system is inefficient, we mean it is moving less water than it should — or less than your property now needs. The symptoms are familiar: gullies that take hours to empty, damp patches that linger, occasional backups in heavy rain, and a general sense that the system only just copes. The causes are usually cumulative rather than a single fault.

Why systems underperform

Design limits come first: many older systems were sized for smaller roof areas before extensions, conservatories and paved drives added runoff, and some were never well designed to begin with. Silt and scale build up in runs and gullies over years, gradually shrinking capacity. Sagging or badly graded sections hold water instead of moving it. Soakaways silt up and lose void space, so the system's outfill rate drops. And ground conditions set a hard ceiling — a soakaway in slow-draining clay limits the whole system no matter how clean the pipes are.

How we assess the system

We look at it end to end: how quickly each gully and channel empties, the condition and falls of accessible runs, the state of the soakaway or outfall, and how much water the system is actually being asked to handle versus what it was built for. Trial holes and flow tests tell us where the true bottleneck is — sometimes a clean-looking system is limited by its outfall, and sometimes a suspect soakaway is fine while the pipes are the problem. Before any digging we check carefully for buried services; detectors help, but no scan guarantees what is below, and utility plans are the customer's responsibility to provide.

What improving it involves

The fix depends on where the bottleneck is. Silted runs and gullies are cleaned and jetted. Sagging sections are re-laid at proper falls. A choked soakaway is cleared or, if it is undersized for today's roof and paving, replaced with a correctly calculated one. Where the ground will not accept water, land drainage to a better outfall or a pumped solution is the honest route — and where the water arrives from beyond your boundary, no upgrade on your plot fully solves it, which we will tell you plainly. Larger works are quoted projects: surveyed, designed, priced and approved before anything starts.

Honest expectations

An improved system moves water faster and copes with more, but no drainage guarantees a dry garden or drive in extreme weather. What a well-sized, clean, properly graded system does is recover quickly after ordinary rainfall and give you margin in heavy rain — a real, noticeable difference from a system that is always one shower from backing up.

Aftercare

Keep gutters clean, clear gully gratings in autumn, empty silt traps where fitted, and keep an eye on emptying times after rain — creeping slowness is the earliest sign of silt building again. Avoid paving over or driving on ground above soakaways, as compaction shortens their working life.

Booking

Book a visit and describe what the system is not doing well: which drains are slow, when backups happen, and any changes to the property — extensions, new drives — since the drainage went in. If you have old drainage plans, they help. The assessment sits within the standard visit; upgrades and replacements are quoted after survey and approved before work begins.

The order we recommend is always: assess, clear, then upgrade. Clearing a system properly often reveals that it performs better than expected once silt is out, which saves customers from buying upgrades they did not need. Where an upgrade is genuinely justified, we show you the evidence — measured emptying times, the soakaway's condition, the area now served — so the decision is yours on facts rather than on our say-so. That is how drainage spending should work.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A drainage system can be installed, intact and still not doing its job — undersized, badly graded, silted or simply overwhelmed by more water than it was designed for. We look at your surface water system as a whole rather than chasing single symptoms, and give you an honest picture of what is working, what is not, and what is worth changing.

What our customers say about our drainage service

4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray

Happy overall

Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.

Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about inefficient drainage system

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is any part of assessing my drainage a DIY job?

You can clear gully gratings, watch how fast water empties and note which areas stay wet — that record genuinely helps us. Rodding an accessible run is also reasonable. Digging, lifting pipes, opening soakaway pits and system redesign are engineer work, and misjudged digging near services is genuinely risky. Never use caustic supermarket chemicals in outdoor drains — and tell us if any have gone in before we attend.

What do you look at when assessing an inefficient system?

Everything from gully to outfall: emptying times, run condition and falls, the soakaway's condition and take-up rate, and the volume of water the system now serves versus what it was designed for. Trial holes and flow tests locate the real bottleneck. You get a plain answer on what is limiting performance and what is worth changing.

Could an upgrade be pointless in my situation?

It can be, and we will say so. If water arrives from a highway or neighbouring land, or the ground simply will not accept water where the system drains, no upgrade within your plot fully fixes it. In those cases we talk through what work realistically achieves — land drainage to a better outfall, relocation, or a pumped solution — rather than sell you a new system that disappoints.

What does an upgrade to my surface water system involve?

Depending on the diagnosis: jetting and clearing, re-laying sagged pipe at proper falls, replacing an undersized or choked soakaway with a correctly calculated one, or adding land drainage. All larger works are quoted projects — surveyed, priced including materials and reinstatement, and approved by you before any digging starts. Weather can delay groundworks and we schedule sensibly around that.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost of any work is quoted and approved before we start, and parts or materials are quoted separately. System upgrades and replacements are surveyed first, so their price comes from a proper design rather than a guess.
