Water pooling on a driveway is usually a levels problem first and a drainage problem second. Drives are designed to shed water to an edge, a channel or a gully; when that does not happen, the water sits. Understanding which part of the system has failed is the first job.
Why a drive holds water
The usual causes are a fall that was built too flat or has reversed over time as the base has settled, a channel drain or gully that is blocked or silted, water arriving from the roof or the road with nowhere to discharge, or a surface that has become less permeable with age. Sometimes a drive was laid without any drainage provision at all, and the water simply has no destination. Vehicles also matter: standing water on a drive that is driven over daily pushes water into the surface and can accelerate wear, and in winter those puddles become ice sheets.
There is a wider point too. In many areas drives should direct water to a permeable area or a drainage system rather than straight onto the highway, and permissions around how a drive discharges are the customer's responsibility — we can explain the options but we do not make compliance promises.
How we assess it
We look at the surface, check falls with a level, test any channel drains and gullies for blockage, and trace where water currently tries to go when it rains. We lift or rod accessible gullies and inspect any existing soakaway connected to the drive. We also look at where water comes from — a downpipe discharging across the drive, a neighbour's higher ground, or the highway — because that changes the fix. Trial digging may be needed to understand the construction below the surface, and we always check carefully for services before any digging, using detectors where appropriate; no scan guarantees what lies below, and utility plans remain the customer's to supply.
The options
If the falls are simply wrong but the drive is sound, targeted re-levelling or adding a drainage channel at the low point is often enough. If the water is coming from roofs or paths, connecting those areas into a proper drainage run — a channel to a gully, then to a soakaway or existing drainage — is the usual answer. If the drive surface itself has failed or there is no drainage provision at all, a rebuilt drive with correct falls and drainage is a quoted project after survey. Where a suitable discharge point does not exist, a correctly sized soakaway can take drive runoff, provided the ground accepts water — and that is a ground-condition question we test, not assume.
We will tell you honestly when a problem is bigger than drainage: a badly settled base, or water arriving from outside your boundary, can limit what any single fix achieves. No repair guarantees a permanently dry drive in extreme weather, but a properly designed system should cope with ordinary rain.
Safety in the meantime
Standing water on a drive is a slip and ice risk. In freezing weather do not walk across or chip at ice on top of standing water; use grit if you need the path, and keep the area visible at night. Avoid driving through deep standing water repeatedly, as it can push water under edges and undermine the surface.
Booking and what we need
Book a visit and tell us roughly when the pooling happens — every rain or only heavy storms — where the deepest water collects, and whether you have any existing channel drains or gullies on the drive. Photos of the puddles after rain help. The assessment visit covers inspection and, where practical, clearing accessible gullies; larger drainage or re-levelling work is quoted after survey and starts only when you approve the price.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Puddles across a driveway are more than an eyesore — they get walked into the house, freeze into ice in winter and slowly work into the surface. We come out, work out why the water is trapped and whether the answer is drainage, levels or the drive itself. Because drives and their drainage interact, we look at the whole picture before recommending anything.
What our customers say about our drainage service
4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray
Happy overall
Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.
Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about driveway water pooling
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I unblock a driveway drain myself?
If you have a channel drain or gully on the drive, clearing leaves and surface debris from the grating is sensible DIY, and a drain rod from the access point is reasonable too. Digging around drains, lifting heavy channel sections, or connecting new drainage into the system is engineer work — done wrong it can discharge water into the wrong place or damage the pipe.
What will you check on my drive?
We check falls and levels, test and clear accessible gullies and channels, trace where roof and path water discharges, and inspect any existing soakaway. If needed we dig trial holes to understand the construction below, taking care around buried services. We then explain what is causing the pooling and which fix is realistic.
Is there a safety issue with a flooded driveway?
Yes — standing water freezes into ice in winter and is a slip hazard, and deep water can hide damage to the surface. Keep off iced-over puddles rather than chipping at them, grit the path you need, and avoid repeatedly driving through deep water. If the pooling is getting worse each rainfall, book us before it undermines the surface.
Do I need to redo the whole driveway to stop the pooling?
Not always. If the drive surface is sound and the problem is a flat spot or a missing channel, adding drainage at the right point or targeted re-levelling can solve it. If the base has settled across the drive or there is no drainage provision at all, a rebuild is the lasting answer — we will tell you which situation you are in after assessing.
What will this cost me?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and any parts or materials are quoted separately. Larger works like new drainage runs or drive re-levelling are priced after a survey, not guessed.
