An oven that lights up but stays cold is one of the most common appliance call-outs we attend, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. The good news is that the cause is often simple, but you cannot know that until someone has actually measured what is happening inside the appliance. Guesswork leads to wasted money on parts that were never the problem.
First, what type of oven do you have?
The diagnosis depends entirely on the fuel. An electric oven that will not heat points to the heating element, thermostat, wiring or the control board. A gas oven that will not heat is a different matter altogether, because gas work must only ever be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. When you book, tell us the brand, model and fuel type so we can plan the visit properly. If your fault turns out to be on the gas side, we will explain what we can safely assess, what we cannot touch, and recommend a trusted Gas Safe partner who works with us closely.
What we check on an electric oven
For an electric oven we start with the basics: is the appliance receiving power, and is the cooker circuit healthy? From there we test the heating elements, because in most electric ovens there are separate elements for baking and grilling, and a failure in one will not necessarily affect the other. We check the oven thermostat or temperature sensor, the selector switch, the door switch and the internal wiring for damage or burning. Modern ovens with electronic controls may also need their control board assessed. Every check is done safely with the appliance isolated, and we explain what we are testing and why as we go.
Common causes we find
The most frequent culprit is a failed heating element, which can often be replaced once the correct part is identified. Elements fail with age, and sometimes a visible blister or break gives the game away. A faulty thermostat or sensor produces an oven that heats weakly or not at all. Damaged wiring, a failed door switch or a problem with the timer or control board can also leave the oven dead or partially working. We will tell you clearly which of these applies to your oven and quote the full cost of the fix, including any parts, before starting.
Repair or replace?
Once we know the fault, we give you a straight recommendation. If the repair is simple and the parts are available, fixing a good-quality oven almost always makes sense. If the fault is expensive relative to the appliance's age and condition, or the part is difficult to source, we will say so and explain your options honestly, including the cost of a replacement. The decision is always yours, and nothing is carried out until you have approved the price.
Safety first
Never use an oven that trips the electrics, smells of burning or shows scorch marks. If your oven is gas and you ever smell gas, do not use electrical switches or appliances, open doors and windows if it is safe to do so, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside the property. A suspected gas leak is not a repair booking.
Book your oven diagnosis
Booking is straightforward: contact us with your postcode, the oven's brand and model, the fuel type and a description of the fault. We will arrange a visit, carry out a full diagnosis and quote any work for your approval before we begin. Same-day attendance may be available depending on the day's diary, and we will always be honest about what we can offer.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
An oven that runs but never gets hot usually turns meals into takeaways. In most cases the cause is electrical rather than dramatic, and a careful diagnosis on site tells you quickly whether it is a straightforward fix or something bigger. We come out, test the appliance properly and give you an honest answer.

Questions people ask about oven not heating
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I test or replace an oven element myself?
We would not recommend it. Oven elements are mains-voltage parts and isolating the supply correctly, accessing the cavity and fitting the right replacement requires competence and the correct part for your exact model. A mistaken diagnosis can also mean buying a part you did not need.
What will the engineer actually check during the visit?
The power supply and circuit, the heating elements, thermostat or temperature sensor, selector and door switches, and the internal wiring and controls. Each test is explained as we go, and you get a clear verdict on what has failed and why.
My oven is gas and will not heat. Can you fix that?
We never carry out gas work. We can safely assess what we can within our electrical competence, explain what the likely gas-side cause is, and recommend a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer with whom we work closely. Gas ovens must only be serviced or repaired by Gas Safe engineers.
My oven is a discontinued model. Can parts still be found?
Often yes, but not always quickly. During the visit we identify the exact part needed, check availability with suppliers and quote separately for the part and the fitting. If a part is unavailable or the wait is unreasonable, we will tell you and discuss the alternatives.
How much will the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, since shorter notice costs more. The engineer will diagnose the fault, then quote the full cost including any parts, and no work starts until you have approved that price.
