A cooker that has stopped working entirely is more than an inconvenience; it changes how a household eats. Whether everything died at once or the cooker faded out bit by bit, the cause needs to be found by testing rather than assumption. That is what our diagnosis visit delivers, and it is the first step of every cooker repair we carry out.

Establish the fuel and the pattern

Cookers are electric, gas or dual fuel, and the fuel type shapes everything about the diagnosis. A fully electric cooker with no signs of life points to the supply, wiring or controls. A gas cooker or the gas side of a dual-fuel cooker involves components that only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on, and we are not Gas Safe registered; we never carry out gas work, but we can assess safely within our competence, explain what the evidence suggests and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work with closely. When booking, tell us the make, model, fuel type and exactly which parts of the cooker have stopped working.

Checks you can safely make first

Before we arrive, look at the isolation switch and consumer unit: a tripped breaker or a cooker switch that has been knocked off is surprisingly common. Check whether the clock or timer is showing an error or an auto setting, which can stop a cooker operating after a power cut. If the cooker is partially working, note precisely what still functions. Beyond these, please do not open the appliance or test internal parts; that is what the visit is for.

What our engineer tests

With the cooker safely isolated we trace the supply from the isolator through the connection point and terminal block, looking for burnt or loose connections, which are a frequent cause of total failure. We then test the main switch, the timer or programmer, door switches and the control components, followed by the individual circuits for oven, grill and hobs on an electric model. On a dual-fuel or gas cooker we stop clearly at the gas boundary and arrange the referral. Everything we find is explained to you in plain English, with the reason behind it.

Typical findings and outcomes

A burnt-out terminal block or damaged cable often explains a cooker that died suddenly and can frequently be repaired. Failed control switches or a faulty timer are also common and usually replaceable. Where the fault is a main control board, we will check parts availability for your model and give you a costed view on whether repair or replacement is the better decision. On the gas side, the referral engineer diagnoses and quotes directly. Whatever the finding, the full cost is quoted and approved by you before any work is done.

Safety you should not skip

Never keep resetting a breaker that trips again, and stop using a cooker that smells of burning, buzzes or shows scorch marks. If you smell gas, do not use electrical switches or appliances, open doors and windows if safe, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside the property; a suspected gas leak is not a booking, it is an emergency.

Booking your diagnosis

Get in touch with your postcode, the cooker's brand, model and fuel type, and what stopped working and when. We will book a visit, carry out the full diagnosis and give you a clear, approved price for any repair. Same-day attendance may be available depending on the diary, and we will always be honest about timing.

A note on timing as well: if the failure followed a power cut, a storm or building work, mention it, because those events leave characteristic evidence that points the diagnosis in a specific direction from the first minute.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When the whole cooker gives up, from oven to hobs, the disruption is immediate and the cause is rarely obvious from the outside. Our engineer tests the appliance from the supply inward, identifies the real fault and explains your options with a quoted price before any repair begins. It is the sensible way to avoid paying twice for the wrong fix.

Questions people ask about cooker not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Should I try to fix a dead cooker myself?

Stick to safe external checks: the isolator switch, the consumer unit and the timer settings. Anything inside the cooker involves mains electricity or gas components and should be tested by an engineer with the right competence and equipment.

What does the engineer check during the visit?

The supply path including the isolator, cable and terminal block, then the main switch, timer, door switches and the circuits for the oven, grill and hobs. You get a full explanation of the fault and a quoted price before any repair starts.

My cooker is gas. Can you work on it?

We do not carry out gas work of any kind. We can complete safe electrical checks where relevant, explain what the symptoms indicate, and refer the gas-side work to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with, who diagnoses and quotes it directly.

The cooker died right after a power cut. Is that related?

It can be, in two ways: the timer may have defaulted to an auto setting, which stops the cooker working, or the power disturbance may have damaged a control board or connection. Testing during the visit distinguishes the two.

How does pricing work for this job?

A booking fee is paid at the time of booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, as shorter notice is charged at a higher rate. After diagnosis we quote the full cost including parts, and no work proceeds until you approve that quote.
