Planning an extra socket
A new socket needs more thought than choosing a spot on the wall. The electrician first checks what you want to plug in, how often it will be used and where the outlet will be useful without creating a trailing-cable hazard. The proposed position also needs to suit the room, the existing wiring route and the type of wall. A location behind a fixed appliance or close to a water source may be impractical or need particular care.
The next question is how the socket will be supplied. It may be possible to extend an existing circuit, but that depends on its design, condition, loading and the protection already provided. A ring circuit and a radial circuit have different arrangements, and the electrician must establish which is present rather than assume from the number of sockets. If the circuit is already heavily loaded or unsuitable, a different arrangement may be needed.
Choosing the cable route and finish
The least disruptive route is not always the best route. Surface-mounted mini-trunking can avoid opening a wall, while a concealed cable usually means chasing a channel into plaster or routing through an accessible floor or ceiling void. The choice depends on the building fabric, the position of joists and services, and how much disruption you are comfortable with. Where a wall must be chased, dust and making-good should be discussed before work begins. Plastering and decorating may not be part of the electrical installation unless included in the agreed scope.
Before drilling or cutting, the electrician considers the presence of hidden pipes and cables and uses appropriate checks. Avoid choosing a location simply because it looks clear from the surface; existing wiring routes are not always obvious. If the property has unusual construction or access is restricted, we will explain any limits and the options available.
Circuit checks and protection
The electrician checks the existing circuit and its protective devices to decide whether an additional outlet can be connected safely. They consider the circuit type, cable condition, the likely load and the route for the new cable. RCD protection is an important part of the assessment. If the required protection is not present or the existing arrangement needs attention, we will explain the issue and discuss suitable work before proceeding. We do not promise a particular compliance scheme or assume a circuit is suitable without testing.
Sometimes the best answer is a new circuit rather than extending an existing one. That is more involved and may require a cable route back to the consumer unit and a separate protective device. We will set out what this means for access, disruption and cost. Adding an outlet does not create more electrical capacity by itself, so the intended appliances matter when planning the work.
How installation works
Once the position and route are agreed, the electrician isolates the relevant supply and verifies it is safe to work on. The cable is installed by the agreed route, connected to the existing circuit or other agreed supply, and terminated in a suitable socket accessory. Work is carried out with care around nearby services and surfaces. The final position and plate style can be discussed in advance, subject to what is suitable for the location and wiring.
After fitting, the electrician carries out appropriate checks and tests on the new socket and affected circuit. If anything unexpected appears, such as unsuitable wiring or a damaged connection, we pause and explain the findings rather than conceal a problem behind the new plate. You should know which circuit supplies the outlet and any relevant limitations before using it for a high-demand appliance.
Use the new outlet sensibly
A new socket makes a room more convenient, but avoid overloading the circuit with several high-power appliances at once. Use appliances in line with their instructions and keep plugs accessible enough to inspect. If you are adding a socket for equipment with a substantial load, tell us during booking so the circuit can be assessed for that purpose. An extension lead should not be used as a permanent substitute for a properly planned outlet.
When to call us
Book an installation if you need power in a new position, want to reduce trailing leads or are planning a room change. Send us a description of the location, the wall type if known and what you expect to plug in. Same-day and emergency slots may be available for urgent electrical issues, while planned installations can be arranged around access and scope.
Book your new socket installation
We will discuss the position, cable route, circuit capacity and finish, then quote the full work before starting. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us; the full cost is quoted for approval before tools come out. Contact Maintenance Men to plan a new socket installation in your West Midlands home.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
An extra socket can save you from stretching extension leads across a room or relying on adaptors behind furniture. We look at where you need power, whether the existing circuit can support another outlet and how the cable can be run before agreeing the installation.
What our customers say about our electrical service
4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews
Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about new socket installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fit a new socket myself?
Adding a socket involves fixed wiring, circuit capacity and electrical testing, so it should be assessed and installed by a qualified electrician. Do not connect it by extending a cable or splitting an existing outlet yourself.
What will the electrician check before installation?
They will look at the proposed position, cable route, circuit type and condition, expected load and RCD protection. They will then explain whether the existing circuit can be extended or another supply arrangement is needed.
Will the work involve cutting into my wall?
That depends on the route and finish you choose. A surface route may use trunking, while concealed wiring can require chasing plaster or access through a floor or ceiling; making-good should be agreed in advance.
Can another socket be added to any existing circuit?
No. The circuit must be suitable for the extra load and the wiring and protection need to be in acceptable condition. If extending it is not appropriate, the electrician will explain alternatives, which may include a new circuit.
How is the cost worked out?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
