When a Socket Is Damaged Beyond Argument
Some socket faults hide inside the wall; a broken socket announces itself. The faceplate is cracked through, the plastic has shattered at the screw fixings, the shutter mechanism has collapsed so pins will not enter, or the whole outlet has been knocked and sits proud of the wall with the plug dangling. However it happened — furniture swung into it, a heavy object dropped from a shelf, a vacuum cleaner tugging at a stiff plug, or simple age making the plastic brittle — the outcome is the same: an outlet you cannot rely on and should not use until it is replaced.
Why Sockets Break, and What the Damage Hides
Plugs into and out of a socket thousands of times eventually fatigue both the internal contacts and the plastic. A faceplate screw done up too enthusiastically years ago can leave stress cracks that spread slowly until one day the plate breaks. Impacts are more sudden but often more instructive: a hard knock can crack the faceplate visibly, but it can also shift the outlet's back box, strain the cable terminations behind it, or damage the conductors themselves in ways you cannot see from the front. Water is another breaker — a socket above a worktop or near a window that has taken moisture over the years becomes brittle and discoloured, and its terminals corrode. The visible break is rarely the whole story, which is why a replacement visit should include an inspection of what is behind the accessory.
Why You Should Not Keep Using a Broken Socket
It is tempting, when the socket half-works, to wedge the plug in at an angle and carry on. There are three problems with that. First, poor pin contact inside a damaged outlet creates exactly the resistance and arcing that leads to overheating — the fault that burns sockets and, occasionally, houses. Second, a cracked or shattered body no longer keeps live parts away from fingers, and the shutters that protect children may not function at all; an outlet with exposed internals is a genuine shock risk, especially where children are around. Third, the damage behind the socket — a strained cable, a shifted box — will not heal, and every use adds flex to it. A broken outlet is a five-minute-to-danger kind of fault. Treat it as out of service from the moment you notice it.
How We Assess the Damage
The engineer isolates the circuit and takes the outlet apart properly. The visible damage is confirmed, and then the parts you could not see are checked: the condition of the back box, whether it is securely fixed to the wall, the state of the terminations and the conductor insulation, and whether the cable has been strained or chafed by whatever broke the socket. If the damage was an impact, we look for signs that the box has moved. If the socket is old and brittle, we check its neighbours too, because age-related failures rarely stop at one outlet. This is a short inspection but it decides whether a straight swap is safe or whether something behind the socket needs attention first.
How We Put It Right
If the back box and wiring are sound, the replacement is straightforward: a new outlet of the correct type and rating, wired to the correct terminals, fixed firmly, and tested before the power goes back on. Where the box has been damaged or shifted, it is renewed and refixed first. Where the cable has been strained, the affected section is cut back and remade properly rather than simply re-terminated at the damaged point. We finish by testing the socket dead and live, checking it holds a plug firmly and carries a load, and leaving the faceplate clean and square to the wall.
Keeping the Next Socket Healthy
A new outlet should give many years of straightforward service, and a few habits protect it. Pull plugs out by the body, not the cable, so the outlet is never levered. Do not over-tighten faceplate screws when cleaning — a hand-tight turn is enough. Keep an eye on heavily used kitchen and lounge sockets, since they age first. And never fill the gap between a plug and a damaged outlet with tape, wedges or adaptors; if the fit is wrong, the outlet needs replacing.
When to Call Us
Book a visit whenever an outlet is cracked, shattered, won't grip a plug, has dropped internals, or has been knocked hard enough to move it — even if it still seems to work. Mention how the damage happened when you book; it helps us bring the right parts and assess the wiring behind it.
Book Your Socket Replacement Today
A broken socket is one of the most satisfying faults to have repaired: quick, clean, and completely resolved in a single visit in most cases. Ring us or use the booking form, and same-day slots are often available. The booking fee is paid at booking, the full cost is agreed with you before we start, and you are left with an outlet that looks right, grips properly, and is tested sound.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A socket can be broken in several ways — a cracked body, a faceplate that has come apart, plug slots that no longer grip, or a unit that has taken a knock and no longer holds a plug — and none of them mend themselves. What matters with a broken outlet is not just swapping the part, but checking whether the knock or the crack has damaged the connections or cable behind it. We replace the socket, inspect what is behind it, and test everything before we leave.
What our customers say about our electrical service
4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews
Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about broken socket
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What does replacing a broken socket cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book your slot, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need the visit. The engineer will tell you the full cost of the work — including the replacement socket — before starting anything, and you approve it all before a single screw is turned.
Can I swap a broken socket myself?
We would advise against it. Even a simple faceplate swap means working on terminations that may be live if the circuit has not been isolated properly, and getting the conductors on the wrong terminals creates a shock or fire risk for the next user. A qualified electrician will also check the damage behind the outlet, which is the part DIY replacements usually miss.
What will the electrician do on the visit?
They will isolate the circuit, inspect the damaged outlet and check the back box, cable and terminations behind it for strain or heat damage. If all is sound they will fit and wire a new outlet of the right type, secure it properly, and test it dead and under load before restoring power. If the wiring behind is damaged they will explain what else is needed and quote for it.
Is a cracked socket dangerous if it still works?
It can be. A crack in the body means the protection between you and the live internals is compromised, and the shutters that guard the slots may no longer operate — a real risk with children in the house. Poor pin contact in a damaged outlet can also arc and overheat even while the socket appears to work. Treat any broken outlet as out of service.
Can you match my existing sockets so they all look the same?
Usually, yes — within reason. Common white moulded and flat-plate styles are easy to match, and we will fit what suits your existing sockets where we can. If your outlets are an older or discontinued style we will talk you through the closest match or a sensible replacement plan before doing anything, so you are not left with one odd socket on the wall.
