The door lock is a safety interlock: it holds the door closed during a cycle and tells the control board that the door is secure. On most dryers it is a mechanical latch with a microswitch, and on some it includes a solenoid that physically locks the door while the drum turns. A fault in any part of that assembly leaves the machine convinced the door is open, which means no start, or a cycle that aborts partway through.

How the fault presents

Pressing start produces nothing, or a brief click and then nothing. The display shows a door symbol or an error code. The cycle begins and stops within seconds. The door will not open at the end of a cycle until the machine is power-cycled. The door opens too easily while running. Each of these suggests a different part of the interlock, from the switch contacts to the solenoid to the wiring.

Checks you can make

Confirm the door is fully closed and that nothing is trapped in the latch. Check for a child-lock setting, which on some machines prevents the door opening rather than the cycle starting. Power the machine off at the socket for a minute and try again, which releases a stuck solenoid on some models. Do not lever the door open with a tool, and do not remove the latch assembly; the switch is connected to mains wiring on many machines.

What we test

We check the latch engagement and the switch actuation, test the microswitch contacts for continuity and for correct changeover, check the solenoid winding where fitted, and inspect the wiring harness between the lock and the board for chafing or a broken conductor. We then confirm the board is seeing the change of state. A lock that switches correctly but is not recognised by the board points to the harness or the board, not the lock.

Causes we find

Worn switch contacts after thousands of cycles. A latch that no longer pushes the switch far enough because the door has dropped on its hinges. A solenoid that has failed open or stuck. Broken wires at the point where the harness flexes with the door. Solder joints on the board that have cracked. Occasionally a board input that has failed, which is the expensive version of the same symptom.

Repair and cost

Microswitches, latches and solenoids are reasonably priced and the repair is usually quick once the console or front panel is opened. A harness repair is inexpensive where the break is accessible. A board is the costly outcome, and we only recommend it when testing proves the input has failed. Parts are matched to the model and quoted separately, and availability varies.

Safety

Never bypass the door switch, tape the latch closed or bridge the connector to make the machine run. The interlock prevents the drum turning with the door open and stops a cycle if the door is opened. If the door is stuck shut, do not force it; a locked door with a live solenoid should be released by an engineer.

After the repair

Test that the machine starts first time with a normal door push, that it completes a cycle without aborting, and that the door releases promptly at the end. Open the door mid-cycle once to confirm the drum stops as it should. If the door needs a lift to latch, mention it, because the hinge alignment may be contributing.

Booking the visit

Tell us whether the machine will not start at all or stops during the cycle, whether the door is stuck shut, and any error code. Give the brand, model and approximate age, and say if the fault began after the door was forced or the machine was moved.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A dryer that refuses to start because it believes the door is open, or that stops mid-cycle when the lock releases, is usually reporting an interlock fault. The door may look perfectly shut. The machine's safety circuit disagrees, and it will not run until that circuit is satisfied. The visit tests the lock, its wiring and the board input.

Questions people ask about door lock fault

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I release a stuck door myself?

Only by switching the machine off at the socket and waiting a minute, which releases some solenoids. Do not lever the door or dismantle the latch, because the assembly is connected to mains wiring on many models.

What does the engineer test?

The latch engagement, the microswitch contacts, the solenoid where fitted, the harness between lock and board, and whether the board recognises the change of state. That identifies whether the lock, the wiring or the board is at fault.

Is it dangerous to bypass the door lock?

Yes. The interlock stops the drum turning with the door open and aborts the cycle if the door is opened. Bypassing it removes that protection, so it should never be taped, wedged or bridged.

Why does the dryer stop a few seconds after starting?

That pattern usually means the board sees the door as open immediately after the start command. It points to a worn switch, a latch that does not push it far enough, or a broken wire in the door harness.

How much will it cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any switch, solenoid or harness priced separately.
