The control panel is where every decision about the dryer is made, so when it misbehaves the machine can appear completely dead or wildly unpredictable. Symptoms range from one button that no longer works to a display that flickers, random programme selection, or a panel that lights up and then goes blank. The diagnosis is about separating the user interface, the wiring and the board.
Defining the symptom precisely
Note which buttons respond and which do not. A single dead button suggests the membrane or switch beneath it. A whole row or column failing suggests a ribbon or track. Flickering or a blank display with the machine still running suggests a supply or board issue. Random programme changes point to a failing board or to moisture in the panel. Write down any error code, and note whether the fault appears only after the machine has warmed up.
Safe checks
Make sure the machine has not been left in a child-lock mode, which disables most buttons by design. Turn the power off at the socket for a minute and back on, which clears a latched fault on some models. Check that the plug and socket are sound and that the machine is not on an extension lead. Do not open the console or press on the panel with tools; the membrane is easily punctured and the board behind it is exposed once the cover is off. If the panel has been cleaned recently, say so, as residue from sprays can sit behind the button edges.
What we test on the visit
We isolate the machine and remove the console cover, then check the ribbon connectors and their seating, test the membrane or individual switches for continuity, inspect the board for moisture, corrosion or heat damage, and check the supply to the board. Where the panel communicates over a data connection, we confirm the link is alive. We reseat connectors where that is the fault and replace the membrane or board only when testing shows it has failed.
Common causes
Worn membrane switches after years of use. Ribbon cables that have worked loose or cracked. Moisture ingress from a spill or from condensation in a cold utility room. Board damage after a power surge. Heat damage from a nearby fault. On some machines a failed display driver affects only the screen while the controls continue to work, which is a cheaper repair than a full board.
Parts, cost and honesty
Membranes are usually affordable and available. Boards are expensive and model-specific, and on older machines may be discontinued or cost a large fraction of a new appliance. We quote before ordering and tell you if the part is unavailable. We do not fit used boards, because their history is unknown and a failure can damage other components.
Safety and aftercare
Do not use the machine if the panel is wet, if there is any sign of scorching around the console, or if buttons work intermittently while the machine is running. Moisture and electricity in the same place is the one combination worth treating urgently. After a repair, test every button and run a short cycle, and keep the machine in a room that is not permanently damp. Keep the console dry when cleaning, and avoid spraying polish or cleaner directly onto the panel, since liquid finds its way past the button edges.
Booking the appointment
Tell us the brand and model, which buttons fail, whether the display works, and any error code. Mention whether the fault started after a spill, a power cut or a move. That information often decides whether we bring a membrane or a board, and it saves a second visit.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A panel that does not respond, flickers or shows a partial display makes the whole machine feel broken, even when the drum and heater are fine. The cause can be as simple as a loose ribbon connector or as costly as a failed board. The visit tests the inputs and the board separately, so you are not paying for a control board when a switch is at fault.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about control panel not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Could it just be child lock?
It can be. A locked panel accepts presses and ignores most of them, which looks like a failure. Check the manual for the lock combination, and try switching the machine off at the socket for a minute before booking.
What do you check on the visit?
We check the ribbon connectors, test the membrane or individual switches, inspect the board for moisture, corrosion or heat damage, and confirm the supply to the board. We reseat what can be reseated before replacing anything.
Is a wet or flickering panel dangerous?
It can be. Moisture inside a console with live electronics is a genuine hazard, and scorching around the panel means stop using it. Switch off at the socket if that is safe and arrange a visit.
Will you need to replace the whole board?
Not necessarily. Many panel faults are membrane, connector or display-driver faults that cost far less. We only replace the board when testing shows the board itself has failed.
What does it cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts, and any board or membrane is identified and priced separately.
