Decking that disappoints almost always disappoints because of shortcuts taken before the boards went down: undersized frames, posts set in unsuitable ground, no thought to drainage or falls, or timber chosen for price rather than suitability. We build decks the other way round — survey first, quote second, build third.

The survey comes first

Before quoting anything we look at the ground: level or sloping, what the soil is like, where water goes after rain, how much sun the spot gets and how the deck will be accessed from the house. We discuss what the deck is for — dining, lounging, steps down to the garden, balustrades if it is raised — and agree the size, height and layout with you. Only then do we quote, as a full project price based on the agreed design, for your approval before anything starts.

Groundwork done safely

Before any digging for posts or foundations, we locate underground services carefully and use detectors where appropriate — but no scan guarantees what is below, so utilities' plans and a safe dig approach remain your responsibility to provide and confirm. We state that boundary plainly rather than pretend certainty we do not have. Posts and foundations are set to suit the ground, with correct support and spacing so the frame cannot bounce or move.

The build itself

The frame is built from appropriately treated timber, sized and spaced for the spans, levelled with deliberate falls so water escapes rather than pools. Boards are fixed with proper exterior screws, spaced correctly for expansion, with neat edges and steps built to the same standard. Raised decks get balustrades and sound structure; low decks get the same care. Working days are agreed in the plan — the visit estimate covers a defined working day on the agreed scope, and multi-day builds are staged so each stage is left safe and weatherproof overnight.

Weather and scheduling

Deck construction is outdoor work and needs suitable conditions — timber laying and any concrete work will not be rushed through rain or frost. We schedule around the forecast and will tell you plainly when weather must move a stage; decking is built to be in the weather, but it is not built in it.

Permissions and honesty

Planning permission and boundary matters are the customer's responsibility — if your deck may need permission, particularly if raised, we will suggest you check with your local authority, but we do not promise compliance status either way. And we make no guarantees against settlement, weathering or timber movement: a deck is timber outdoors, and it will weather and move a little with the seasons no matter how well it is built. Good construction minimises it; nothing abolishes it.

Aftercare

We will tell you how to keep the deck draining and dry — clearing gaps, seasonal cleaning and periodic oiling — because a little maintenance each year is what keeps a good deck good.

Design choices that matter

During the survey we will talk through the choices that decide how your deck ages: timber species and treatment suited to its position, board direction and spacing for drainage, height and steps that work with the garden's levels, and under-deck airflow that keeps the frame dry. Where your ground is heavy clay or the site stays damp, we will adapt the foundations and ventilation accordingly rather than build a standard deck into unsuitable ground. Good design decisions at survey stage are what separate a deck that looks fine on day one from one that is still fine in year ten.

How to book

Start with a survey via maintenance-men.com or by phone. The booking fee is paid when you book the survey visit; the full project cost is quoted after the survey and approved before work starts, with materials itemised separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A new deck transforms how you use a garden, but it lives or dies on what happens before the first board is laid: the survey, the ground, the frame. We start with a proper survey and quote, so you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before anything is agreed.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about decking installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I build my own decking?

A low, small deck is within reach of a confident DIYer, and we are happy to say when a design is straightforward. The parts that catch people out are frame sizing and spacing, safe post foundations, and falls for drainage — and larger or raised decks genuinely need experienced hands for the structural work.

What happens during the survey for a new deck?

We assess the ground, levels and drainage, discuss what you want the deck for and agree the size, height, layout, steps and any balustrades. We locate services carefully before any digging plan, and then we quote the full project for your approval before anything is built.

Who is responsible for checking planning permission?

You are, as the customer — permitted development rules for decking depend on height, location and your property, and we do not promise compliance status. We will flag when a raised or prominent deck looks like it may need checking with your local authority, but the confirmation is yours to obtain.

How long does a new deck take to build?

It depends entirely on size, height and ground conditions, so we do not promise a timescale before the survey. The quote sets out agreed working days — the estimate covers a defined working day on an agreed scope — and a multi-day build is staged so everything is left safe between sessions.

What will a new deck cost?

The survey visit carries a booking fee paid when you book, and any survey labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The build itself is quoted as a full project after the survey — you approve the price before work starts, and materials such as timber and fixings are itemised separately.
