A deck's whole drainage strategy is its gaps: rain falls, runs off the boards and escapes between them to the ground or a drainage route below. When leaves, silt, moss and general garden debris pack those gaps and the space underneath, water ponds on the surface, wicks into the boards and sits against joists that were never meant to stay wet. Blocked deck drainage is a slow-motion rot machine.
How decks get blocked and why it matters
Under trees and shrubs, leaf-fall packs the gaps within a season or two. Silt and weed growth wash into low spots. Anything built over or under the deck — storage, hot tubs, planters, sheeting left down — stops water escaping and holds it against the timber. The consequences are quiet but real: timber that never dries rots from the top of the joists, fixings corrode, and in winter trapped water freezes and opens the boards and gaps further.
How we assess and clear it
We inspect the surface gaps and clear the packed debris, then look underneath — the state of the joists and bearers tells us how long the blockage has been there and whether it has done damage. We check where the water below is actually meant to go: open ground, a channel, a land drain or nowhere sensible at all. Where under-deck drainage was never really provided, we will say so and quote options rather than pretend a clean-out solves a design problem. All work is quoted and approved before we start.
Clearing, cleaning and repairing
Clearing usually means removing compacted debris from the gaps, cleaning the space beneath, and restoring the escape routes — open ground, channels or gullies — so water has somewhere to go. Where clearing reveals rot or damaged fixings, we quote those repairs separately and honestly: timber that has softened under years of trapped water needs proper repair, not optimism. If a low spot or badly planned area is the root cause, correcting falls or improving the escape route can be part of the plan.
Weather and access
Clearing is weather-flexible, but repairs and cleaning beneath the deck need dry conditions and safe access — working under a low deck in standing water is a non-starter. We schedule sensibly and say when weather must wait.
Honest limits
A cleared deck will block again — that is what decks outdoors do — so we will tell you the realistic maintenance interval and what helps most, such as seasonal clearing and managing overhanging growth. We cannot guarantee against future blockage; we can make sure the drainage is as good as the design allows.
When to call
Puddles that sit on the deck after rain, water dripping persistently from one spot, or gaps you can no longer see through are all blockage signs. The sooner they are cleared, the less damage the trapped water does.
Prevention worth knowing
Decks block on a predictable calendar: leaf-fall in autumn is the big one, with silt and seedlings following in spring. A ten-minute sweep across the gaps after the leaves come down, and again in spring, prevents most blockages ever forming. Keep things stored under the deck off the ground so water can pass, and avoid sheeting or membrane left flat beneath the boards. If your deck sits under mature trees, expect to sweep more often than your neighbours. We will tell you the specific rhythm your deck needs when we clear it.
How to book
Book through maintenance-men.com or by phone. The booking fee is paid when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Materials and repairs revealed by the inspection are quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Decking is designed to let water through, so when it stops doing that, something is blocked — and the trapped water is damaging the structure while it sits. We clear what is blocked, find out why it blocked, and quote anything the inspection shows needs repairing.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about blocked deck drainage
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I clear my own deck drainage?
Surface gaps and loose debris, yes — a decking gap tool or even an old screwdriver and a stiff brush will shift a lot. What DIY misses is what is packed underneath and what the trapped water has already done to the joists, which is where a proper inspection earns its keep.
What do you check when deck drainage is blocked?
The gaps across the whole surface, the debris packed underneath, the condition of joists and bearers where water has been sitting, and where water below the deck is actually meant to escape to. We also look at what caused the blockage — overhanging trees, low spots or things stored under the deck.
Is blocked deck drainage really doing damage?
Yes, steadily. Trapped water keeps the joists damp, and damp joists rot, corrode their fixings and soften the timber that holds your boards down. In winter the freezing and thawing opens gaps and cracks further. Clearing it is cheap; leaving it is not.
Why does my deck still hold water after clearing?
If water still ponds after the gaps are clear, the surface falls are wrong or there is no proper escape route underneath — sometimes both. Clearing removes the blockage but not the design problem, so we check the falls and under-deck drainage and quote the correction needed rather than leaving you with the same puddle.
What does clearing deck drainage cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost of the clearing is quoted and approved before we start, and any repairs the inspection reveals — rotted timber, failed fixings, drainage improvements — are quoted separately.
