Why unsafe mounts need proper removal, not brute force

There are mounts that come down for a reason: a TV bracket fixed with too few or too light fixings, anchors that have worked loose in plasterboard, a mount whose position has left the screen unsupported at one corner, or simply hardware you have lost confidence in. Whatever the reason, removal is the delicate half of the job. Ripping a mount off a wall with force risks exactly the outcome you are avoiding — a dropped television, a torn plasterboard face or a wall left with damage far bigger than the holes.

Protecting what is attached to the mount

If a television or anything valuable is on the mount, protecting it is the first order of business. We support the item properly before any bolt is undone — and for large screens that means a second pair of hands, because a modern TV is less about weight than about bulk and awkwardness, and one-person removals of big screens are how screens get cracked. Once the item is off and safe, the mount itself can be unbolted and taken down in a controlled way rather than forced. If you are removing a mount because it has failed or you distrust it, we will assess whether the mount is fit to be reused at all; a bracket that has already pulled at its fixings is not automatically safe for a second career, and we will say so.

Taking the hardware out of the wall

With the load off, the fixings come out: bolts, plugs, toggle fixings and any backplate the mount leaves behind. Some come out cleanly; plasterboard anchors often leave a ragged hole behind, and masonry plugs sometimes need to be driven slightly deeper or drilled out rather than wrestled. The aim is a wall of small, defined holes — not a crater — so the making good is straightforward.

Making good the wall — and where it stops

This is the part to be clear about, because "patched and tidy" needs defining. Our making good covers the removal damage: filling the fixing holes and any small local damage, patching where a plasterboard face has torn, and sanding flush once cured so the wall is ready for decoration. It does not automatically include painting: a fresh fill may blend into existing paint or may show as a different sheen, and a full repaint to make the area invisible is a decorating decision agreed separately. And if removal reveals damage beyond patching — a large area of failed plaster, or a hole that needs more than a local repair — that becomes a wall repair job in its own right, which we will scope honestly rather than bodge into the visit.

What to have ready

Clear the area around and beneath the mount, and have somewhere safe and prepared for the item to go once it is off the wall — a table cleared for a TV, floor space for a mirror. Tell us the size and rough weight of whatever is mounted, so we plan the removal properly. If the mount is being replaced rather than simply removed, have the new hardware available or tell us so we can discuss what is needed.

Aftercare

Let fills cure fully before you paint or fix anything into the patched area. If the item that came down is going back up elsewhere, remember its new position needs its own assessment — wall type, weight and fixing choice — which we can quote as a separate short visit. And if the mount was removed because it failed, it is worth asking yourself what went wrong before anything new goes on that wall.

Booking the removal

A straightforward mount removal with local making good is a short visit; a large screen on a doubtful mount takes longer and we will scope it before starting. Same-day availability may exist if you call early. To book: the booking fee is paid on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work begins — patching materials if needed are quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A wall mount that was badly fitted, is pulling out of the wall or is no longer wanted needs removing with more care than it was put up with. Heavy items come off safely, the hardware comes out cleanly, and the wall behind is patched so you are left with a tidy surface rather than a battle scar. We are explicit about what making good includes — and where painting and larger repairs begin.

Questions people ask about unsafe wall mount removal

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I remove a wall mount myself?

Undoing a few bolts sounds simple, but the risky part is everything else: supporting a large screen while it comes off, dealing with anchors that have gripped or torn the wall, and not turning small holes into a torn plasterboard patch. If the mount is unsafe or the item is heavy, having it removed properly also means the wall gets made good correctly at the same time.

How do you protect the TV during removal?

The screen is supported before any fixing is undone, and large screens are handled by two people because bulk and awkwardness, not just weight, are what cracks them during removal. Once off, the item goes somewhere safe and prepared that you have arranged, and only then does the mount itself come off the wall in a controlled way.

Does the removal include repainting the wall?

Not automatically. We fill and patch the holes and sand them flush so the wall is ready for decoration, but a perfect match to existing paint is not something we can promise, and repainting the wall is a separate decorating decision we can agree if you want it. We will show you what the patched wall looks like and talk through the options.

Can I reuse the same mount somewhere else?

Only if it is assessed as sound. A mount that pulled at its fixings, bent under load or came out of a failing wall may not be fit for a second installation, and we will tell you honestly rather than refit something we would not trust. If it is reusable, its new position still needs a proper assessment of wall type and weight.

What does removal cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need the visit, with more notice usually meaning a lower rate. The full cost — removal plus making good as agreed — is quoted before work starts and approved by you. Any patching materials or a replacement mount, if wanted, are quoted separately.
