What heavy curtains demand
Interlined, blackout and heavy drapery curtains are wonderful at keeping a room dark and warm, and unforgiving on what holds them. A wide window dressed in lined curtains can put serious load on a rail every single time it is drawn — and the load is not gentle either: it is a firm pull, twice a day, at the points where the curtains attach. Heavy curtain rail fitting is therefore engineered rather than simply hung: enough brackets, strong fixings, and every fixing into something solid.
Assessing the setup
Three things decide the method. The rail: its length, its material — aluminium tracks flex, steel rails are stiffer — and how many brackets it was supplied with, which is often fewer than the load actually wants. The curtains: lined, interlined, blackout, and roughly how much fabric is involved, because a floor-to-ceiling pair on a three-metre rail is a different order of weight from café curtains. And the wall: what is above and around the window, where the lintel runs, and what solid fixing points exist along the full length.
Long rails are the crux. A rail much beyond about a metre and a half wants a bracket every sixty to eighty centimetres for heavy curtains, and the middle of a wide span is exactly where rails sag if the brackets run out. If the supplied brackets are not enough, we say so at quoting and agree extra ones as materials, quoted separately.
Bay windows are their own case: segmented rails need each segment fixed with the angles right, and the loads at the bends are higher than people expect. We allow extra time for bays and say so when quoting.
How the fitting goes
A level line runs the full length first — over two metres, a rail set level by eye at one end and checked at the other is how slopes happen. Fixing positions are chosen for solid material: beside the lintel where it spans, into masonry or studs elsewhere, planned around the usual cable and pipe routes and never drilled blind. Brackets are fixed with anchors matched to the load, the rail is seated, and the curtains are hung and drawn several times to check smooth travel and that nothing binds. Long, heavy rails are a two-person job at the hanging stage, and we plan the visit accordingly.
What to have ready
The rail, its brackets and the curtains, with a rough account of the curtain weight if you can. Tell us the rail length, whether it is a bay window, and the wall type above the window if you know it. Clear the window and the working area, and mention any existing rail or blinds coming down, since removal and making good the old holes is part of the visit.
Limits
We fit mechanical curtain hardware and do not carry out electrical work; motorised tracks needing mains wiring are an electrician's job, and we fit the track around that. Very wide or unusually heavy installations may want extra brackets or stronger fixings, agreed in the quote. If a position cannot take a confident fixing, we discuss alternatives rather than make a hole we are not satisfied about.
Aftercare
Draw the curtains fully a few times in the first week and check the bracket screws after a month — heavy curtains find any loose fixing quickly. Keep the track clear of dust so the gliders run freely, and never lift or pull the curtains by the fabric to help them along; that is what bends rails.
Booking
Tell us the rail length, the curtain type, whether it is a bay window, and your timescale; same-day may be available. A booking fee is paid on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Extra brackets or fixings are identified and quoted separately as materials.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Heavy curtains are wonderful at keeping a room warm and dark, and demanding on whatever holds them. A lined, interlined or blackout curtain on a wide window puts real load on the rail every time it is drawn. Fitting a heavy curtain rail is therefore a job about support: enough brackets, strong fixings, and every fixing into something solid.

Questions people ask about heavy curtain rail fitting
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fit a heavy curtain rail myself?
With a solid wall, a good drill and a helper for the long lengths, competent DIYers do. The failure modes are familiar: too few brackets so the rail sags in the middle, fixings into plasterboard rather than solid material, and a rail set level at one end and sloping by the other. Heavy curtains punish all three within days, which is why the assessment matters more than the drilling.
What do you inspect before fitting?
We look at the rail's length and material, the weight and type of the curtains — lined, interlined, blackout — and the wall above and around the window, establishing where the lintel runs and what solid fixing points exist along the full length. Brackets are then specified for the load, with positions planned around the usual cable and pipe routes. Everything is agreed with you before drilling.
Can you fit rails in a bay window?
Yes, and bays simply need more time and care: segmented rails must have each section fixed with the angles right, and the loads at the bends are higher than a straight run. We allow for that when quoting rather than treating a bay as a straight window with extra steps. Tell us it is a bay when booking so the visit is timed properly.
How many brackets does a long rail need?
For heavy curtains, a bracket every sixty to eighty centimetres is a fair working rule, and the middle of a wide span is exactly where rails sag if brackets run out. Rails are often supplied with fewer brackets than the load wants; if so, we say so at quoting and agree extras as materials. It is far cheaper than a rail that bows within a month.
How does pricing work?
There is a booking fee on booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need the visit. The full cost, including the two-person work long rails need, is quoted before starting and approved by you. Extra brackets or fixings are identified and quoted separately as materials.
