Where the cold is being lost
A fridge that never quite keeps food cold is usually losing cold air or losing cooling capacity. Lost air means a worn door seal, a door that does not close squarely, or constant opening in a busy household. Lost capacity means the system cannot generate enough cold: vents blocked by overpacking, an evaporator iced up because the defrost cycle has failed, a fan not circulating, a control component misreading the temperature, or — more seriously — a compressor and sealed system in decline.
Each cause has a different fix and a different price, which is why a structured diagnosis beats guesswork and guess-buying parts. Household patterns matter as well: a fridge in a hot utility room, or one opened constantly during a big family weekend, works harder than its design allows, and what looks like failure can partly be environment. Tell us about the room the fridge lives in when you book.
What we check on the visit
The engineer measures what the cabinet is actually achieving against the setting, then works outward: door seals and closure, internal airflow and frost patterns, fan operation, thermostat and sensor behaviour, and how the compressor runs. An ice-choked evaporator behind a frost-free back panel is a common hidden cause that explains a fridge which drifts warm over days and never recovers.
If the evidence points to the sealed refrigerant system — components healthy but the cold simply not arriving — we say so plainly. Sealed-system work, including any refrigerant recharge, is specialist work we do not carry out, and we will explain your realistic options rather than attempt it.
Protecting the food meanwhile
Treat the appliance as unreliable until it is fixed. Keep a fridge thermometer inside so you know the truth, keep door openings short, and move high-risk items — raw meat, fish, chilled ready meals, dairy — to a working fridge, cool box with ice packs, or a neighbour's appliance. Judge remaining items by the storage guidance on the packaging rather than any fixed safe duration we could quote, since safety depends on the product and how it has been handled. When something high-risk has clearly warmed, discard it.
Repairs we typically carry out
Seals, hinges, fan motors, thermostats, sensors and defrost components cover most of these cases and are quoted on the spot where the correct part is identified. Defrosting an iced evaporator is done safely as part of the visit, with the underlying cause fixed so it does not return. Model-specific parts such as control boards are identified and quoted separately, with availability depending on the manufacturer. Where a sealed-system fault or a failing compressor is confirmed on an older appliance, we give you an honest repair-versus-replacement comparison instead of selling a doomed repair.
Stopping it happening again
Once repaired, check the seal grips evenly, keep packaging clear of the back wall and vents, avoid overpacking, let hot food cool before storing it, and keep the condenser coils dust-free with the plug pulled out. A fridge thermometer is cheap insurance — it tells you the truth about the cabinet long before the milk does.
Booking your visit
Call or use our contact form with the brand and model number, when food started turning early, and what the appliance is doing — running constantly, icing up, silent, or apparently normal but warm. If you have a fridge thermometer, give us the readings you have seen. A booking fee is paid when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about fridge not keeping food cold
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Food is turning early — how worried should I be?
Treat the fridge as unreliable until it is fixed: move raw meat, dairy and chilled ready meals to a working appliance or cool box with ice packs, and judge items by the storage guidance on their packaging. Discard anything high-risk that has clearly warmed.
What is the most common hidden cause?
An iced-up evaporator behind the back panel on frost-free models — the defrost cycle has failed, the vents gradually choke, and the cabinet drifts warm over days. We check for it directly.
Can you fix it in one visit?
Often, when the cause is a seal, fan, control component or defrost fault. If a model-specific part must be ordered we quote it separately and arrange the follow-up, and we confirm availability with the manufacturer first.
What if the cooling system itself has failed?
Sealed refrigerant system faults are specialist work we do not carry out. We will say so plainly if the diagnosis points there and explain your repair and replacement options honestly.
How much does diagnosis and repair cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book to secure the appointment. Labour is at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work begins; parts are quoted separately.
