What the drain hole actually does

Inside most fridges, at the back of the cabinet, sits a small drain channel that collects condensation and the water from the automatic defrost cycle. It runs down to a shallow evaporation tray above the compressor, where the warmth evaporates the water away. The system only works if the channel stays clear.

Food crumbs, packaging debris, sticky residues and — in fridges that run cold — ice itself block the channel. When that happens, water pools at the back of the cabinet, creeps onto shelves, or finds its way to the floor. A drain that repeatedly freezes over suggests the airflow or defrost behaviour needs looking at as well, not just the blockage.

Signs your drain is the culprit

Water inside the cabinet rather than outside is the classic sign, usually collecting at the back or under the salad drawers. Ice forming at the drain opening, a damp or musty smell that cleaning does not shift, and the same puddle returning within days of mopping up all point at the drain. If water only appears after the defrost cycle or overnight, that timing confirms it.

What we do on the visit

The engineer locates the drain, clears the channel and flushes it through with warm water until it runs freely, then checks the outlet and the evaporation tray underneath are clear and seated correctly. We look for why it blocked — debris from uncovered food, a cabinet that is not level so water cannot reach the drain, or a drain that keeps freezing — and address that cause so the fix lasts.

Where the repeated freezing points to a deeper airflow or defrost issue, we diagnose it on the same visit. Sealed refrigerant work is specialist work we do not carry out, and if the evidence points there we will say so plainly rather than guess.

What you can safely do yourself

With the fridge unplugged, flushing the visible drain opening with warm water using a syringe or baster is safe and often clears a simple blockage. A pipe cleaner or soft flexible brush can help. Dry the cabinet afterwards so the first defrost cycle does not immediately refill the channel. Avoid wire, chemical drain unblockers and anything rigid that could damage the channel, and do not remove the internal back panel — on frost-free models components behind it can hold charge and the panel often conceals the evaporator.

Stopping it coming back

Keep food covered, especially anything crumb-prone or sticky, and avoid pushing items against the back wall where the drain opening sits. Check the fridge is level, or very slightly tilted back, so condensation flows toward the drain rather than the door. If the drain freezes repeatedly even after cleaning, that is a fault worth diagnosing properly rather than clearing weekly. The evaporation tray above the compressor deserves the same attention as the channel itself: if it is dislodged, cracked or sitting with old water in it, the whole drain path slows and problems return. Checking it takes minutes during the visit and is included in the diagnosis rather than an extra.
