The impeller is the part of an extractor fan that actually moves the air, and it lives a rough life: fast rotation, constant air loading, and in kitchens and bathrooms a coating of grease or dust that adds weight and unbalance. When blades crack, bend, loosen or shed pieces, the effects ripple through the whole fan – and the fix depends on correctly identifying what's wrong with the impeller and why.

How impellers get damaged

Physical damage happens – a foreign object sucked or dropped into the fan, a cleaning attempt that went wrong, or a fragment breaking off and being thrashed around inside the casing. Age-related failure is more common: plastic impellers become brittle with years of heat and UV exposure near the motor, grease attacks some plastics, and the hub fixing that secures the impeller to the motor shaft can work loose so the blades wobble instead of spinning true. Build-up contributes too – a blade caked asymmetrically with grime unbalances the assembly even when the plastic itself is sound.

Why a damaged impeller shouldn't be ignored

An unbalanced impeller doesn't just rattle – it hammers the motor bearings with vibration on every rotation, works mountings loose, and can eventually crack the casing or duct connections. The noise gets worse, extraction drops because the blades no longer present a true surface to the air, and the motor wears out years early. A loose impeller grinding on the casing also poses the overheating concerns we cover on our grinding-noise page. Fixing an impeller problem early is cheap; ignoring it until the motor dies is not.

What you might notice

Vibration you can feel or hear as a new low rumble; a rattling or clicking that's rhythmic rather than random; extraction that has dropped while the fan still spins visibly; or a wobble visible at the fan face. If the damage came from a foreign object, there may have been a clatter or scraping at the time. Describe what you noticed – the history helps diagnosis.

How we assess impeller damage

Our engineer isolates the fan and examines the impeller for cracks, missing or bent blades, and security on the motor shaft. We check the motor bearings for damage the vibration may have caused, look for debris or fragments in the casing, and confirm whether the casing, duct connections or mountings have been affected. We also weigh up the underlying cause – build-up, brittleness, a loose fixing or a foreign object – because that determines whether a repaired impeller will stay healthy.

The fix

A loose impeller can often be refitted securely if the shaft and fixing are sound. Build-up unbalance is resolved with a proper clean, which restores balance and extraction together. A cracked, bent or brittle impeller is replaced – either as a spare part where the fan's model supports one, or with a new fan where it doesn't. We'll be honest about which applies: for many domestic fans, impeller spares are unavailable and a replacement fan is the realistic route. If a replacement is needed, we'll recommend a suitable model, quoting the unit separately from labour, and you approve the full cost before anything is ordered. Damaged blades are not a DIY repair – gluing or bending plastic blades back into shape usually makes the unbalance worse and the fan unsafe.

Booking

Contact Maintenance Men with the room, the fan's make and model if visible, and how you think the damage happened. Same-day visits may be available. We'll assess the impeller and its knock-on effects, explain the options, and quote before starting.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about fan blade damage

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can a cracked fan blade be repaired with glue?

We'd advise against it. Bonded plastic rarely restores true balance, and an unbalanced impeller hammers the motor bearings and can shed fragments into the casing. Where a spare impeller is available for your model, replacement is the proper fix; where it isn't, a new fan is the realistic answer. We'll confirm which applies.

Can I look at the impeller myself?

With the fan off at the isolator you can see some of the impeller through the grille, and that's about as far as we'd go. Don't remove the cover or reach inside – live connections sit behind it, and the impeller can move unexpectedly. Diagnosis and access are for the visit.

My fan vibrates but no blade looks broken – what else causes that?

Asymmetric build-up on the blades unbalances the assembly even when the plastic is intact, and a loosened hub fixing makes the impeller wobble on the shaft. Both are common and fixable – a proper clean or a refit. The diagnosis distinguishes damage from build-up from looseness.

Will the motor be damaged if I keep running it?

Yes, progressively. Vibration from an unbalanced impeller wears the motor bearings and works mountings loose, so a cheap impeller problem becomes an expensive motor failure. If the impeller is also grinding on the casing, the overheating risk grows too – book the assessment sooner rather than later.

What does impeller damage assessment cost?

There's a booking fee paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. After assessing the impeller, motor and casing we quote the fix – spare part or replacement fan, with parts separate from labour – and work only proceeds once you've approved the full cost.
