A smart thermostat may need compatible wiring, a receiver or hub as well as app setup. We assess the existing control arrangement first, then help with the agreed installation and practical operation without promising every feature will work on every system.

What the symptoms can tell us

Smart products combine conventional heating controls with app, account and network features, and each model has its own requirements. A device may need a neutral wire, a switched live arrangement, a hub, supported Wi-Fi or a specific boiler interface. The box contents and claimed compatibility should be checked against the existing installation rather than assumed. Even when heating control is installed correctly, phone permissions, account setup, broadband, router settings and manufacturer services can affect remote access. This work does not guarantee connectivity, cybersecurity or app operation. Tell us the thermostat make and model, whether you have bought a hub, and what control is currently fitted; these details help identify potential compatibility questions before the visit.

Checks during the visit

The engineer checks the customer-supplied model and instructions against the existing wiring, voltage, receiver and heating-control requirements before fitting. If suitable, the control is installed and its local demand response is checked. Supported setup can include practical pairing guidance for a hub or app, but the customer retains account access and enters private credentials directly. Network setup is reviewed only in a practical, model-specific way; internet provider configuration and third-party service faults are outside the heating installation. If the product requires wiring, an accessory or an interface that is not present, the issue is explained before any extra work is considered.

Repair choices and limits

Where compatibility is confirmed, the thermostat can be fitted and the agreed basic functions checked. The customer supplies the unit and required accessories unless another arrangement has been agreed. Additional wiring, a compatible receiver or repair of existing controls may incur separately quoted work. If local heating control works but the app cannot connect, the cause may sit with the router, phone, account or service rather than the installation. If a particular boiler or control protocol is unsupported, another product may be needed; no promise is made that every boiler or smart feature can be supported. The next step and its cost are confirmed before proceeding.

Electrical and heating safety

A thermostat is a control device, not permission to work inside a boiler. Maintenance Men handles thermostat controls and suitable electrical or water-side heating faults within scope, but does not carry out gas work or open a gas boiler to adjust gas components. If symptoms suggest a combustion, flue or other gas-side safety concern, stop using the appliance if advised, leave it unopened, and arrange a Gas Safe registered engineer; an urgent gas smell is not a routine booking. Do not remove covers, probe live terminals or bypass a control. The engineer will explain any limit before proceeding.

Booking, price and next steps

The booking is for the stated diagnostic or defined thermostat visit, not an automatic promise that every fault can be fixed in one appointment. Booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost for the agreed work is quoted and you approve it before work starts. Any required replacement control, wiring materials or other parts can be identified and quoted separately; parts are not assumed to be included. Availability, compatibility and access may affect the next step. Book online and include the thermostat make and model, heating system type if known, symptoms, and anything already checked.

After the visit

Keep product packaging, the quick-start guide and account recovery information available, but do not give passwords to the engineer. Note the existing settings and keep the old thermostat until the replacement is tested. After fitting, check local operation separately from app access; follow the manufacturer's instructions for updates and security. If remote functions later stop, record whether the wall control still operates and whether the hub or router is online. Avoid factory resets that could remove schedules or pairing unless you understand the maker's recovery steps.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about smart thermostat setup

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I set up a smart thermostat myself?

You may follow the manufacturer's user-level app setup, but wiring and compatibility should be checked before fitting a wired control. Do not remove the existing thermostat or change installer terminals.

What does your setup visit include?

The engineer checks the product against wiring and heating controls, fits it if suitable, and tests local operation. Supported pairing guidance may be provided, but network or app availability is not guaranteed.

Will you guarantee Wi-Fi, app or account security?

No. Those depend on the product, phone, router, broadband, account and third-party services. You keep passwords private and enter credentials yourself.

Will this smart thermostat work with my boiler?

That depends on the boiler's control interface, wiring, voltage and the exact thermostat model. Compatibility is checked before fitting; no guarantee is made for every boiler or feature.

How is the visit priced?

The booking fee is paid when booking; hourly labour depends on how soon you need the visit. The complete cost is quoted for approval before work starts, and parts or accessories are quoted separately.
