Causes
A shower can leak where the tray meets the wall, around an enclosure or door seal, or from a supply or waste connection. Sealant can shrink, split or pull away as surfaces move and age. A tray may develop a crack, while a screen seal can become worn or displaced. Water escaping from a valve or pipe may travel behind tiles before appearing near the shower. The same puddle can therefore have different causes, and applying fresh sealant without checking the source may only cover the symptom. The plumber considers whether the leak happens during showering, afterwards or while the water is off.
Why it worsens
Water that repeatedly reaches flooring, skirting or the wall can damage finishes and remain hidden behind a panel or beneath a floor covering. Damp may spread beyond the point where it first appears, making the source harder to identify. A small gap in a seal can grow with movement or regular water exposure, and a leak from pipework can continue even when the shower is not running. Using the shower while water is escaping into an unknown area can add to the moisture. If practical, stop using it until the source has been checked, especially if the ceiling below shows a mark or water is near electrics.
How we diagnose
We ask whether the leak appears only while showering, whether it continues afterwards and where water first becomes visible. The plumber inspects the tray, visible sealant, screen edges, shower valve and accessible connections. Where appropriate, we run the shower briefly and check likely escape points, then consider whether the waste or concealed supply may be involved. A wet patch at the enclosure does not by itself establish a failed seal. If pipework is hidden, we explain the limits of what can be confirmed without access and discuss any further investigation before work is arranged.
How we fix
The repair follows the source found. A displaced screen seal may be refitted or replaced; failed sealant can be removed and renewed once the area is prepared; a leaking connection may need tightening or renewal. If the tray is cracked or a concealed pipe is leaking, a more involved repair may be required, and we explain the options rather than promise a quick surface fix. We protect the bathroom where possible and test the area after the work, checking whether water still escapes during use. The service estimate is around 90 minutes for a typical visit, but access and the repair required can change the duration.
Prevention
After using the shower, wipe standing water from the enclosure edge and check whether the floor remains dry. Keep seals clean without scraping them with sharp tools, and avoid leaning on a screen or pulling at a loose strip. If sealant begins to separate, darken or crack, have it inspected before water regularly reaches the surrounding surfaces. Keep an eye on the ceiling or wall below an upstairs shower if it is accessible. These checks can reveal changes early, but they cannot prevent a pipe fault or a damaged tray; those need a plumbing assessment.
When to call
Arrange an inspection if water appears outside the enclosure, a seal has separated, the tray feels unstable or a damp mark develops on an adjoining wall or ceiling. Stop using the shower if water is spreading into concealed areas or reaching electrical fittings. If there is active water from a pipe, isolate the supply if you can do so safely; if not, turn off the main stopcock and seek help. Tell us whether the leak appears only during a shower or continues while the shower is off. Avoid covering a suspected pipe leak with sealant.
Book a call-out
When you contact Maintenance Men, describe the shower type, where water appears, when you first noticed it and whether the leak persists after use. A photograph of the tray edge or wet area can help us understand the symptoms, but the plumber needs to inspect the fitting in person. A typical visit is around 90 minutes according to the service estimate; concealed pipework, access panels or additional damage can change what is possible during that time. We will explain the likely repair before proceeding and advise if further access or separate making-good work is needed. Book a call-out to find the source and agree a repair that addresses the cause, not just the wet patch.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Water on the bathroom floor after a shower may come from a worn enclosure seal, a failed tray joint or a leaking valve or pipe connection. The wet area does not always sit directly below the fault, and water can track behind panels or along the floor. Maintenance Men checks when and where the leak appears, then discusses the repair options. A typical visit takes around 90 minutes; concealed pipework or difficult access can take longer.

Questions people ask about leaking shower repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Why does water leak from the shower only when it is running?
Water may be escaping through an enclosure seal, tray joint, waste connection or pipe that leaks under use. An inspection while considering when the leak appears helps identify the source.
Will new sealant always fix a leaking shower?
No. Sealant will not repair a cracked tray or a leaking valve or pipe, and applying it over a hidden fault may conceal the problem. The source should be checked first.
Should I stop using the shower if water reaches the floor?
If water is spreading beyond the enclosure or the source is unclear, stop using it until it has been inspected. This is especially important if moisture is reaching electrics or a ceiling below.
How long does a shower leak visit take?
The service estimate is around 90 minutes for a typical visit. Concealed pipework, difficult access or additional damage can affect the time and work needed.
Can you tell from a photo whether my shower tray is leaking?
A photo may show a visible crack or damaged seal, but it cannot confirm every cause. The plumber will inspect the tray and connections and explain any limits where pipework is concealed.
