Flickering is one of the most misunderstood lighting problems there is. People assume a flickering light means a dodgy bulb and put up with it for months. Sometimes that's true. Other times flicker is the visible sign of a loose connection arcing quietly behind a ceiling rose — and that's not something to wait on. The skill is telling the two apart, and that's exactly what we do.

What Makes Lights Flicker

The everyday causes are simple. A bulb that isn't seated firmly in its holder loses intermittent contact, and the light stutters as the connection makes and breaks. A lamp that's nearing the end of its life can flicker before it dies outright. With LED lights, the causes multiply: many LED bulbs are inherently dimmable-incompatible, and putting a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer is the classic recipe for strobing, buzzing or both. Cheap LED drivers can also flicker all on their own, with nothing wrong in the wiring at all.

The causes that matter are electrical. A loose conductor at a terminal doesn't just interrupt the light — it can arc, heat up and degrade over time. And if several lights flicker together, or the flicker changes when you switch on a big appliance like a kettle or a washing machine, the question shifts from the fitting to the circuit or supply.

Harmless Flicker and Flicker That Isn't

Here's the honest breakdown. A single LED that flickers only on a dimmer, and is fine at full brightness, is almost certainly a compatibility issue — annoying but not dangerous. One bulb flickering occasionally near the end of its life is likewise low-drama.

What deserves prompt attention: flicker that comes with warmth, buzzing or a faint smell from the fitting; flicker that gets steadily worse over weeks; flicker that affects several lights at once; or flicker that responds to appliances switching elsewhere in the house. Those patterns suggest a connection problem or a circuit problem, and connection problems are progressive — they don't heal, they worsen.

How We Diagnose It

We start with the history you give us, because the pattern matters: which lights, when it started, whether it's worse on the dimmer, whether it coincides with anything else changing in the house. Then we test. The bulb and holder first, because that's thirty seconds. Then the fitting's internal connections and the ceiling rose, where we check terminals for tightness and look for the tell-tale blackening that arcing leaves behind. If the pattern points wider, we test at the switch and look at what else shares the circuit.

If a dimmer is involved, we check what it's actually controlling — LED load, minimum wattage, dimmable versus non-dimmable lamps — because an incompatible combination explains a huge share of the flicker complaints we see.

How We Put It Right

The fix follows the finding. A reseated or replaced bulb costs you nothing. A remade loose connection is a small job — but a job that matters, because it removes a genuine fire risk, not just an irritation. An incompatible LED-on-dimmer situation is solved either by swapping to dimmable lamps or fitting a dimmer suited to LED loads; we'll explain the options and costs of each. If the flicker turns out to be an LED driver failing, replacing the lamp or driver ends it.

Preventing a Repeat

Once it's fixed, a couple of habits keep flicker away: buy decent-quality LED lamps rather than the cheapest on the shelf, match dimmers to LED loads properly, and take flicker seriously the first time rather than the fifth. A light that flickers is talking to you; we just help you understand what it's saying.

When to Call Us

Book a visit if flicker comes with heat or smell, if it affects more than one light, if it's worsening, or if you've already tried new bulbs to no effect. And if a dimmer-controlled light is strobing, we can usually solve it in one visit.

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A light that flickers occasionally can seem harmless; one that strobes every time you switch it on is impossible to ignore. Either way, flicker always has a cause — sometimes trivial, sometimes a warning. We test the fitting, the switch and the circuit to establish which you've got, then fix it at the source rather than papering over the symptom.

Questions people ask about flickering lights

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What will a flicker diagnosis cost me?

You pay a booking fee when you book the appointment, and labour is charged by the hour at a rate set by how quickly we can attend. The engineer quotes the total for the diagnosis and repair before starting, so the figure you approve is the figure you pay.

Is flickering something I can fix myself?

The bulb-level checks, yes: reseat the lamp firmly, or swap in one that works elsewhere. If the flicker persists past that, stop — the next places to look are ceiling rose terminals and switch connections, which stay live with the switch off. Those are for a qualified electrician with proper test gear.

Could the flickering be dangerous?

It can be, and the distinguishing signs are warmth, buzzing, discolouration or a smell near the fitting, or flicker that keeps worsening. A loose connection that arcs generates heat and degrades insulation over time. Flicker alone with none of those signs is usually benign, but it's worth having checked rather than assumed.

My LED flickers on the dimmer — is the LED faulty?

Probably not. Most LED bulbs can't be dimmed at all, and even dimmable ones only behave on dimmers designed for low LED loads. A standard dimmer paired with LEDs is the most common cause of strobing we see. The fix is either dimmable lamps plus a compatible dimmer, or standard lamps without the dimmer.

Why do the lights flicker when the kettle boils?

Heavy appliances draw a large current for a few seconds, and if lights share part of the supply path with them, the momentary voltage dip shows as a blink or brief flicker. Occasional blinks from big appliances are common in older properties, but frequent or worsening dips are worth investigating — they can point to a supply or connection issue.
