Lights that dim without anyone touching anything are unnerving in a way flickering isn't. Flicker is obviously a fault; steady dimming feels almost normal — the light just isn't as bright as it was. But dimming is information, and reading it correctly matters, because the causes range from entirely harmless to worth fixing today.

What Dimming Actually Means

Dimming happens when the voltage arriving at your lights falls below what they expect. Everything downstream of that — brightness, warmth of colour — drops with it. So the real question is always: what is dragging the voltage down, and where?

The everyday, largely harmless answer is load. Big appliances — kettles, washing machines, showers — draw heavy current for a few seconds, and in homes where lighting and power share long or older supply runs, that draw pulls the voltage down briefly. A dip when the kettle boils, recovering the moment it's off, is common and usually benign, particularly in properties with longer distances from the supply.

The answers that matter live in the wiring. A connection that has built up resistance — corroded, loose or damaged — drops voltage across itself every time current flows, and everything downstream dims accordingly. That connection also heats, which makes it progressively worse. An overloaded circuit does the same thing more broadly: too much demand on a run that was never sized for it, with dimming as the visible symptom. And occasionally the cause is upstream of the house — a supply issue the network operator owns, which we can identify and help you report.

Reading the Pattern

The timing tells the story. Dimming precisely when a big appliance starts, recovering when it stops, points at load and supply. Dimming that's now constant where it used to be occasional points at a degrading connection or a circuit that's carrying more than it should. Dimming on one circuit only, while other lights are unaffected, localises the problem firmly inside your wiring. Dimming everywhere, all the time, shifts attention to the supply and how the house is fed.

One more pattern deserves its own warning: dimming combined with warmth, buzzing or smell at any fitting, socket or the consumer unit is not a curiosity — that combination means heat, and heat in wiring is a same-day call.

How We Diagnose It

The engineer measures rather than guesses. Voltage is recorded at the consumer unit and at points on the lighting circuits, both at rest and while the suspected loads run — a kettle boiling on command makes the diagnosis immediate if load is the cause. Circuits are checked for voltage drop along their length, which is where a high-resistance connection announces itself, and terminations at the consumer unit, junctions and roses are inspected for the heat evidence that goes with it. We also check what's actually on each circuit, because rooms that have grown extra lights and sockets over the years sometimes carry more than their wiring planned for.

The Fixes

Where the cause is benign load behaviour, the honest answer is that the wiring is doing what its design allows, and we'll explain that plainly rather than inventing work. Where the cause is a resistive connection, it gets remade properly — that's both the dimming fixed and a genuine hazard removed. Where a circuit is genuinely overloaded, the options are rebalancing loads across circuits or, in some properties, adding capacity; we'll explain what each involves and what it costs before you decide anything. Where the cause sits in the supply beyond your meter, we'll document the measurements and guide you through reporting it to the network operator, who owns that side of the boundary.

When to Call Us

Book a visit when dimming is new, when it's worsening, when it affects a whole circuit rather than a moment, or whenever it comes with warmth, buzzing or smell at any electrical point. Sudden whole-house dimming that persists is a supply problem worth reporting immediately.

Lights that dim noticeably — when the kettle boils, when the heating kicks in, or for no reason you can see — are describing something about your electrical system. Sometimes it's benign; sometimes it's a connection that needs attention. We test which it is, and either put your mind at rest or put the fault right.

Questions people ask about dimming lights

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What does investigating dimming lights cost?

There's a booking fee when you book, then hourly labour at a rate that depends on how soon we can attend. The diagnosis and any repair are quoted together before work begins, so you approve the whole figure in advance. If the dimming proves benign, you'll know that quickly and pay only for the time it took to establish.

Should I worry about lights dimming when the kettle boils?

Usually not — heavy appliances pull a large current briefly, and on longer or older supply runs that shows as a momentary dip that recovers as soon as the appliance stops. It's worth having checked once if it's new or worsening, but an occasional dip tied exactly to appliance use is common and normally benign. Constant dimming is a different matter.

What will the engineer measure?

Voltage at the consumer unit and along the lighting circuits, at rest and under load — we'll run a kettle or heater deliberately to see how the readings respond. Voltage drop along a circuit reveals any high-resistance connection, and terminations get inspected for the heat evidence that accompanies them. Measurements, not hunches.

Can dimming lights be dangerous?

Dimming alone usually isn't; it's a symptom worth understanding. It becomes a safety matter when it's constant or worsening, when it affects a whole circuit, or — urgently — when it appears alongside warmth, buzzing, smell or discolouration at any fitting, socket or the consumer unit. That combination means heat in the wiring, which never improves on its own.

Could the problem be outside my house?

Occasionally, yes — the supply side, from the network up to your meter, is the network operator's responsibility, and supply problems do dim lights across the whole property. We can establish from measurements which side of the boundary the issue sits, and if it's theirs, we'll document the readings and point you to exactly how to get it reported and dealt with.
