We check the trap, the pop-up waste and the branch behind the basin to find what is restricting the flow, then clear what is accessible and explain anything that is not.

Basins are the fitting most likely to block slowly rather than suddenly, because what goes down them — soap, toothpaste, shaving foam, hair — coats the inside of the pipe rather than forming a plug. That gradual build-up is why the first sign is often a slower swirl rather than standing water.
Where a basin blockage usually sits
In most cases the restriction is in the trap under the basin, in the pop-up waste assembly, or in the short length of pipe between the trap and the wall. Bottle traps collect debris in the base; P-traps collect it on the bend; pop-up wastes gather hair around the pivot and the seal. Beyond the wall, the branch may run to a stack or into a hopper, and on older properties it may be a lead or solvent-welded plastic run with a shallow fall.
If more than one fitting is slow, or the basin gurgles when the bath or toilet is used, the restriction is further along and the basin is simply the place where it shows.
What the visit involves
We start by asking whether the basin drains slowly all the time or only after use, whether it gurgles, and whether there is any smell. Then we run water and watch how it behaves — a basin that drains reasonably and then stops usually has a partial restriction further out, while one that holds water immediately has a blockage close to the plug.
We remove the plug and check the waste for hair and soap build-up, then put a bucket under the trap and open it. Basin traps are designed to be opened for cleaning, and on most installations this is quick. We examine what comes out, because the nature of it tells us a lot: grey soap sludge points to a coated pipe, hair points to the waste, grit or silt points to something further downstream.
Clearing the run without damaging it
Once the trap is clear we test again. If the flow is still poor we work along the branch with a small rod or a drain snake, through the trap connection or a rodding point if one exists. We do not use high-pressure jetting on a basin branch — domestic basin waste is small-bore and often plastic, and the pressure that clears a soil drain can blow a joint apart. Where a basin shares a branch with other fittings, we check those too before we finish, because clearing one fitting and leaving a restriction next door simply moves the problem.
When the problem is the fitting itself
Some basins drain badly because of the waste rather than a blockage: a pop-up rod that no longer lifts the plug fully, a shallow trap that is close to self-siphoning, or a flexible waste with a dip in it that holds water and debris. A flexible corrugated waste behind a pedestal is a common culprit and is often better replaced with a smooth run than repeatedly rodded.
We will say when a fitting is the cause and quote the replacement, rather than charging you to clear a pipe that will block again in a month. If the trap is cracked, the seal perished or the waste corroded, that is a repair rather than a clearance.
Chemicals, seals and what not to do
Supermarket caustic drain products are a poor fit for a basin. They work best on a fully blocked pipe with standing water, they can damage chrome wastes and rubber seals, and they are hazardous if they splash back when the blockage shifts. Never mix two different products, and never follow a caustic product with an acid one. If you have used anything, tell us before we attend so we can protect ourselves and the surfaces.
Plunging is reasonable on a basin if you seal the overflow first, otherwise you simply push air and water out of the overflow instead of moving the blockage. Hold a cloth over the overflow slot, or tape it, then plunge steadily rather than violently.
Keeping it clear afterwards
A hair catch in the plug hole costs very little and removes most of what blocks a basin. Rinsing with hot water after shaving helps, and an occasional flush of the trap — not a chemical — keeps soap sludge from setting. If the basin starts to gurgle again, that is the early warning worth acting on.
To book, tell us the postcode, whether the basin is the only slow fitting, and whether the trap has been opened or chemicals used. If the basin is in a rented property or a shared building, check with the landlord or managing agent first.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A basin that empties in slow motion, or leaves a ring of grey water behind, is a small annoyance that usually gets worse. Most of the time the restriction is close to the plug and can be reached without opening the wall. We look at the fittings you have before deciding how to clear them, because basin wastes vary a great deal.
What our customers say about our drainage service
4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray
Happy overall
Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.
Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about blocked bathroom basin
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just plunge it myself?
Yes, if you seal the overflow first with a damp cloth, because otherwise the plunger pushes water out of the overflow instead of down the waste. Plunge gently and steadily. If it does not clear after a few attempts, stop rather than working the trap loose.
What do you check on the visit?
We test the flow, inspect and open the trap, check the pop-up waste and the connection to the branch, and rod the run if the trap is clear but the basin is still slow. We also test nearby fittings to see whether the restriction is shared.
Can I use a chemical drain cleaner?
We would rather you did not. Caustic products can damage chrome wastes and rubber seals, and they are dangerous if they splash back when the blockage moves. Never mix products, and always tell us if any has been used before we attend.
Why does my basin gurgle when the toilet flushes?
Gurgling means the shared branch is pulling air through the basin trap as water passes. That usually points to a partial restriction or a venting problem further along the run rather than a blockage in the basin itself, and it is worth checking before it becomes a full blockage.
How is the cost worked out?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, parts quoted separately, so the full cost is approved before any tools come out. A replacement trap or waste is quoted as a separate part once we know what is fitted.
