Shed locks live a hard life — rain, frost, dust and daily wear — and when one fails, the question is always whether it's the lock or the door it's fitted to. Fixing the wrong one means paying twice, so we diagnose first and repair second.
Why shed locks stop working
Corrosion is the most common killer: padlocks, hasps and staple screws rust solid over winter, and internal locking mechanisms seize up once water gets inside. Keys wear or break, and cheap locking handles fail internally. Just as often the lock is innocent — a door that has dropped on its hinges no longer lines the hasp up with the staple, so the padlock won't go through, or the strike plate sits half a centimetre out after the frame has moved. Wind-shaken doors loosen the fixings around the hasp, and impact damage distorts the closing edge. Wooden doors that swell in wet weather can jam a bolt so hard it won't retract.
What we assess
We test the lock, key and mechanism first, checking whether the fault is in the hardware or in the alignment. We examine the hasp and staple, their fixings and the timber behind them, look at how the door hangs and whether the frame has moved, and check for rust, damage or signs of tampering. If someone has attempted to force the shed, we look at the closing edge, hinges and fixings as a whole, because a new lock on a weak door is a placebo. We'll also give an honest view on whether the existing hardware is worth repairing or better replaced.
Repairs and replacement options
Seized but sound locks can often be freed, cleaned and lubricated; worn or corroded hardware is usually best replaced with suitably rated hasps, staples, padlock guards or locking handles. Misaligned closing hardware is realigned once the underlying door or frame issue is corrected — and if the door is hanging badly, that repair comes first, because the lock will only stay aligned once the door does. Where fixings have pulled out of soft timber, we repair the wood before refitting hardware so the new screws have something to grip. If a break-in has damaged the door, treating it as a security repair rather than just a lock swap makes sense, and we'll explain the options. Any replacement parts are quoted separately, and the full cost is approved before work starts.
Honest limits
We don't claim any lock makes a shed burglar-proof — locks deter and delay, and nothing substitutes for a well-built door on a sound frame. We're not a locksmith service for house doors, and we don't provide security advice as a certified service; what we do is fit and repair shed hardware sensibly and honestly. Weather delays are possible if a repair needs parts or dry conditions for timber work, and we'll tell you if so.
If you're replacing a shed because the lock failed and you no longer trust it, tell us that too. Sometimes the sensible conversation is about the whole closing arrangement — door condition, hinges, hasp and hardware together — rather than one component. We'll give you a proportionate view: many sheds need two or three targeted fixes rather than a full security overhaul, and we'd rather quote the smaller honest job than sell you a package you don't need.
Booking your visit
Call or book through the website and tell us the shed's age and material, what the lock is doing, whether the key still turns and whether the door closes at all. If there's any sign someone has tried to force it, mention that when booking. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any parts quoted separately.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A shed lock that won't turn, won't latch or won't line up leaves your tools, bikes and garden kit exposed. Sometimes the lock itself has failed; just as often the door has dropped or the hasp has shifted and the lock is fine. Our visit establishes which it is, fixes the cause and makes sure the shed fastens properly before we leave.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about shed door lock not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fix a stiff shed lock myself?
A spray of suitable lubricant and working the key gently can free a mildly stiff lock — that's reasonable DIY. Don't force a key that won't turn, as it may snap inside the mechanism. If the lock is seized solid, rusted through, or the problem is really a dropped door misaligning the hasp, hardware replacement and realignment is our job.
How do you tell whether the lock or the door is the problem?
We test the mechanism and key first, then check how the door hangs and whether the hasp lines up with the staple. If the door has dropped or the frame moved, realigning the closing hardware comes after fixing the cause — otherwise the new alignment fails the same way.
Can you improve my shed's security at the same time?
We can fit better-rated hasps, staples, padlock guards or locking handles and repair the timber they fix to, which makes the closing edge more robust. We won't claim any hardware makes a shed burglar-proof — locks deter and delay, and a sound door and frame matter as much as the lock.
My shed has been broken into — can you help?
Yes. We assess the damage to the door, frame and closing hardware, make the shed secure again and quote the repairs before starting. If the structure itself is damaged, we'll include that in the assessment so you get the full picture in one visit.
How much will it cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any replacement locks and hardware quoted separately, so nothing proceeds without your approval.
