Stair lifts rarely fail without warning — they whisper first. A battery that charges a little less each week, a roller that rumbles faintly, a connector loosening with vibration, a sensor drifting a few degrees out of true. An annual service is how those whispers get heard while they are still cheap to answer, instead of becoming a mid-journey stop that strands someone on the stairs.

A serviced lift is also a documented lift. When we know your machine — its model quirks, its battery age, the sound of its drive — any future fault is diagnosed faster and repaired with more confidence. Regular visits keep that knowledge current.

What a full service covers

Batteries: we load-test them and report their condition honestly, because a tired battery is the single most common cause of lifts stopping mid-journey. Charging: the charger's output, the contacts on carriage and rail, and the park position alignment. Drive: the motor, belt or gears, rollers and bearings, listened to and inspected for wear. Rail: cleaned and inspected along its full length for wear marks, debris and alignment, with bracket fixings checked against specification. Seat assembly: fixings, swivel latching, armrest hinges and locks, footrest folding action. Safety systems: every sensor tested through its range — footplate edges, seat presence, interlocks, limit switches — because a safety feature that has quietly failed is worse than no feature at all. Controls and electrics: buttons, call stations, the loom's flexing sections, connectors and the board's indicators. And a full set of travel cycles under load at the end, so you can hear what a healthy lift sounds like.

What you get from the visit

A clear report: what we checked, what is healthy, what is wearing and what needs action now or soon. Where a consumable such as batteries is due for replacement we quote it with manufacturer-approved parts and fit it on approval. Where we find a developing fault we quote the repair in full before doing it — a service visit never becomes an unapproved repair. And where the lift is simply in good order, we will say exactly that; not every service finds something, and honesty about that is part of the job.

Between services

Park the lift squarely on its charge points every time — it is the single best habit for battery life. Keep the stairway and rail clear of clutter, sweep the treads regularly, and keep drinks and cleaning sprays away from the seat, panel and belt. Report any new noise, hesitation, slow travel or refusal promptly — a call about a new squeak is a small job; the same fault six months later is a component. Weight limits and usage guidance are manufacturer specifications and apply to everyone using the lift.

Safety reminders that never go out of date

If the lift ever stops with someone aboard, keep them safe, comfortable and calm, call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use a manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions by a confident person — never climb under, push or force a suspended lift. Never bypass or disable a safety sensor, and never use a lift that behaves erratically, trips the electrics or smells of burning until it has been checked.

How often, and when to start

Once a year suits most household lifts; heavy use or a lift approaching battery age may benefit from a mid-year check — we will advise honestly from what we find. If your lift has never been serviced, the first visit is the most valuable one of all: it establishes the baseline and usually finds the small things that have been quietly building since installation.

Booking

Call or message with the make and model, when it was last serviced, and anything you have noticed — however small. You pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and any work beyond the service itself is quoted in full and approved before it starts, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A stair lift is used every day by the person who can least afford it failing, which is why an annual service earns its keep. Our visit covers every wear item and safety check, catches drifting faults early, and leaves you a clear report of what we found.

What our customers say about this job

3 out of 5 from 1 reviews

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about stair lift service

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What does an annual stair lift service actually involve?

Battery load testing, charger and contact checks, drive and roller inspection, full rail cleaning and alignment checks, seat and footrest mechanism checks, every safety sensor tested through its range, and controls and wiring inspected — finishing with loaded travel cycles. You get a written summary of what is healthy and what needs attention.

Is a service something I could do myself?

The everyday care is yours — parking on the charge points, keeping the rail clear, cleaning per the manual. The service itself is not: it involves load-testing batteries, testing sensors and safety systems, and checking fixings to specification, all of which need tools, knowledge and access to manufacturer information.

How long do stair lift batteries last, and does the service tell me?

Batteries are a consumable with a service life that varies by model, use and charging habits — there is no single answer, which is why we load-test rather than guess. The service report tells you plainly whether the batteries are healthy, wearing or due for replacement, with any replacement quoted first.

The lift seems fine — is a service really necessary?

Most faults we are called to gave warning signs weeks earlier that a service would have caught: a battery sagging, a sensor drifting, a connector loosening. The lift seems fine right up until it stops halfway with someone aboard. An annual service is how you avoid that call.

What does a service cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us. The service itself is charged as quoted; anything beyond it — batteries, parts, repairs — is quoted separately in full and approved by you before it starts.
